Things that are socially acceptable but you wish they were not

I feel like a bit of a man. For me:

Men pissing by the side of the road. I have see this twice in the past few days, yet there were public loos close by. If a woman did this people would question her sanity, or at the very least think she was undignified yet for men it's considered normal.

Men going shirtless in public. Do what you like in your own garden, but why walk down the high street etc without a shirt. It's never that hot in England - in fact some much hotter climates actually have dignity laws that prohibit both men and women from even showing their arms or legs. Plus you know, sun burn.

Smoking. I hate walking behind someone who is smoking, it blows back in the face of the person behind and gives me a headache. It's unhealthy, expensive and should just be banged in public full stop imo.

Right, peasants who can’t afford a house with a garden should absolutely be forbidden from holding a barbecue in a public place, whether it is legal or not. They should be spending every minute of their time studying or working harder, so that they can join at least the bottom tier of ‘those who have.’ Only the wealthy (or comparatively wealthy, in rural areas) should be allowed to enjoy the privilege of cooking outdoors in summer. 🙄

@PolkaDotMankini

Yeah I get this weird feeling around drags. Are they supposed to be funny? It makes me cringe. I know a 40 year old guy who arranged one to come to his birthday BBQ? I wasn’t there. I seen it on Facebook. Whole thing just gave me the ick, it felt wrong. Can someone articulate why I feel like this? Why the fuck would someone arrange for a drag queen to come to their 40th birthday BBQ? A group of hetro drunk men stuffing themselves with burgers and laughing at this drag.

Awful.

To be honest- and I know this will be unpopular- but I'd like '40th's' and all milestone age-focused birthdays to be socially unacceptable, drag queens or no drag queens! Adult birthdays as such: fine; making a big fuss of someone's new age, no! Bad enough that we all have to get older; having celebrations focused around it is just adding insult to injury IMO.

Eating on public transport, having 3 or more children, and dogs in restaurants/on beaches/ on public transport.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 25/03/2023 18:33

Folk calling people by a shortening of their name completely uninvited.

My husband is called David and everyone who meets him calls him Dave right from the off, despite him introducing himself as David. (not his real name)

Really winds me up. He's too polite to continually correct people though.

JudgeRudy · 25/03/2023 18:42

Expecting to be offered a sweet/crisp/square of chocolate (but not a spoonful of peas or a bite of my cheese sandwich) from MY lunch
Vaping/smoking outsides entrances/exits so you have to move through a cloud
Smelly food in confined spaces
Insisting someone has a proper (alcoholic) drink
Asking someone what they're ordering when eating out (just why?)
Asking a 'new' female acquaintance if they have children (within 10 mins)

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 25/03/2023 18:50

Seems to be a modern social acceptable thing but, my kids friends calling me 'Lord' instead. Of Mrs Butterfloofs.

Poodles23 · 25/03/2023 18:52

I hate seeing people eat just with a fork in one hand, struggling to cut meat etc when there is a knife next to them. We were brought up to use a knife and fork but I think it is another American trend that has been picked up here.

Noname77 · 25/03/2023 18:54

Agree with all OPs and most of the comments.

I will add people throwing rubbish out of car windows.

Stressedafff · 25/03/2023 18:57

people who let their dogs jump on you then if you dare object you get “he’s just friendly”

Justbefair · 25/03/2023 18:59

Being next to someone dramatically and loudly chewing gum, ugh hate it!

People walking glued to their phone screen taking no notice of anytthhing, including the fact I'm about to run them over!

People talking into the end of their phone on loudspeaker, I don't want to hear your f conversation.

Oh so many, just people I guess 🙄 🤣

I'm not sure littering is seen as socially acceptable. Only a tiny proportion of the nation would think so surely

DorothyBinns · 25/03/2023 19:01

Fake grass

Jetskis

Can both get in the bin.

toxic44 · 25/03/2023 19:02

Heavy swearing and obscenities in public. Drunks.

Talking or pissing everywhere, the open pop-up urinals in London. Disgusting.

CocoFifi · 25/03/2023 19:09

That is different and I bet they don’t look like the ridiculous eyebrows that seem to be the fashion

marzipansux · 25/03/2023 01:54

No response. Can @Wallingtonhall pls tell me what the issue is? In my country there are built in bbq's in most parks. Either free or very cheap. I'm struggling to think of a problem with them!

Maybe it's the people 'operating' them. Often when I've come across someone BBQing in a public space they seem to 'claim' a disproportionate amount of space around them for their party or plonk themselves a metre away from you to waft burger smoke onto you.

Bluekerfuffle · 25/03/2023 19:17

Another thing that seems to be the norm here, if not socially acceptable, is people posting on threads simply to tell everyone else how much better they are than all the dreadful people posting on the stupid thread.

Susansmith1949 · 24/03/2023 21:31

People who spend their free time on mumsnet complaining about truly harmless things. Honestly about 80% of you should take a long hard look in the mirror. The majority of this thread reads like a bunch old women complaining about anything that annoys them about young people. Half of these answers aren’t even things that are socially acceptable anyway, it’s just people moaning about things which don’t harm anybody in any way. Nipples visible through a shirt? Tight leggings? People using your first name? Stopping your trolley too suddenly?!? Jesus Christ get a life. Everybody finds people playing music out loud on the bus annoying - it’s not “socially acceptable”. There are real problems in this world and you lot have gone mad. Praying for all of you. So much jealousy and petty hatred here I’m losing faith in humanity.

Oh bore off!

CherryRipe1 · 25/03/2023 19:23

Marrying first cousins.

Coffeemummy123 · 25/03/2023 19:25

People that turn a blind eye to the ignorant, verbally abusive twat on public transport that thinks it's ok to leave said twat swearing and putting down a strughling parent with a disabled child!!! If i encounter said twats again, I am a lion now! Please no direct messages as I am well aware we are all different and hindsight is a wonderful thing!

True - just the morons who do it.

KnottyKnitting · 25/03/2023 19:27

People playing loud music through a speaker at the beach- I want to hear the waves and the sounds of nature, not a club beat!

People who sing along when when you go to see a show. I haven't paid £80 to hear your tone deaf attempts at " Don't cry for me Argentina"... Same for people who talk non stop through a film or show- STFU!

Swearing loudly where children can hear. Worse still, swearing at young children.

Parents who walk along with a pushchair scrolling on their phones ignoring their small child who is trying to point something out or worse still, parent on phone whilst 2 year old watches a programme on an I pad as opposed to looking at the dogs, birdies, ducks, cars etc.

Parents who have obscene logos on their t shirts at a school sports day- " I am a horny c*nt" - no exaggeration- parent and partner were most irritated when head teacher told them to turn it inside out as could not see what was wrong with it. The funniest thing was he was parading up and down with a small baby in a frilly bright pink pram!

People who drive German cars ( usually men and usually at least 20mph over the speed limit...)

SpringViolet · 25/03/2023 19:34

Smoking cannabis (or skunk as that what it smells like) in the street.

Swearing in public when it’s really not necessary in general conversation.

Not indicating when driving.

Wearing sliders with socks in winter.
