Things that are socially acceptable but you wish they were not

I feel like a bit of a man. For me:

Men pissing by the side of the road. I have see this twice in the past few days, yet there were public loos close by. If a woman did this people would question her sanity, or at the very least think she was undignified yet for men it's considered normal.

Men going shirtless in public. Do what you like in your own garden, but why walk down the high street etc without a shirt. It's never that hot in England - in fact some much hotter climates actually have dignity laws that prohibit both men and women from even showing their arms or legs. Plus you know, sun burn.

Smoking. I hate walking behind someone who is smoking, it blows back in the face of the person behind and gives me a headache. It's unhealthy, expensive and should just be banged in public full stop imo.

Most of the things already mentioned 😂

That ageism and misogyny are still accepted and, in many instances, celebrated in our society.

The casual ageism on MN is appalling.

Women who pretended not to understand stand something to make some passive aggressive point. Just make your point like a grown up.

oh gosh yes, just passive aggression generally. Bloody cowards.

Chilloutsnow · 25/03/2023 08:33

@PolkaDotMankini

Hmm yes. It does. Wow I never really thought of it like that.

Zoos.

Cannot see how keeping such intelligent animals in cages won’t end up Planet of the Apes and we’d deserve it. And I’m hardly an animal lover as a rule.

Surely most zoos are actually rescue centres athough? Certainly the ones near me are.

whateverwillbewillbewontit · 25/03/2023 08:43

I recently walked past a girl who was trying to (presumably) take a 'walking selfie' (e.g Look at me Instagram with my hair all blown back, out getting some exercise). That and people having conversations with their phones on loud speaker. I do this when I'm working from home alone but not in public.

Not that long ago I was on the motorway and drove past a bloke having a wee. He was literally stood next to the sign for the Services.

@Chilloutsnow for me, it's a caricature of women. It feels degrading.

With amount of filler and botox used alot of woman are caricatures of woman.

But I do agree, I dont get drag acts. I dont see th appeal . It's odd that drag acts have 95%-98% female fanbase

justsoembarrassing · 25/03/2023 06:45

Seriously?

I'd have to say something or walk away!

I let most things go but I inwardly hate people loudly 'show' farting or burping. I have 2 female friends who do this (they are in their 50s). I really hate it but everyone finds it hilarious.

Simonjt · 25/03/2023 09:02

Touching other people, like hand shaking, cheek kissing etc at work, I don’t get paid enough to allow other people to touch me.

It's crazy how accepted smoking is when it's so bad for you. The sidestream smoke (bit that comes out the lit end) is actually worse for you than the bit they directly breathe in and non smokers are more at risk than smokers (whose immune systems are working overtime to try and keep them alive). And same with idling (unnecessarily running) engines in public places, especially outside houses/schools. If people knew about the neurological deficits it causes, particularly in the womb there'd be outrage but they're never able to publish all of the studies on it because the compensation they'd have to dish out would be insane.

I don't think smoking is really socially acceptable, even a lot the smokers I know appear embarrassed by it. The only place I feel it's accepted is at a sports club I belong to, everyone socialises outside anyway and loads of people smoke. They are all really considerate though.

People who come on threads to moan about moaning and make out they aren't moaning nut when they get as old as us they will have plenty to moan about don't worry. And if they are not moaning they will be one of those insufferable people who breeze through life happy as a lark with oodles of friends and lovely children and a perfect relationship and make the rest of us feel like shit. I hate them the most and the ones that end their post with 3 smileys - they are total bastards. 😆😆😆

Oh, and going back to the original post - MEN.

I’m sure one day I’ll read a post from you that doesn’t make you sound like a loon.

Today is not that day.

MapleSyrupSweet · 25/03/2023 09:16

Being rude about people's size!

I wouldn't be so sure.... 😉

owiz · 25/03/2023 09:28

Tracksuits outside the house for anything other than exercise. Brown/nude track suits are never acceptable.

OriginalUsername2 · 25/03/2023 15:53

People holding their phones like a plate of hors d'oeuvres with their conversation on speaker phone.

wentworthinmate · 25/03/2023 17:40

anythinginapinch · 24/03/2023 18:44

Loud anything. Music, voices, banging doors, kids ...

Yes! Everything is so loud. I live near a school and at break time it is unbelievable the screams, you’d think there was a killer on the lose.

IconicKitty · 24/03/2023 18:39

Also spitting - not socially acceptable per say but lots (of men) do it.

God I’ve seen plenty of women do it too. Utterly vile.

Wills · 25/03/2023 17:50

Sorry - (not read through whole thread so MN crime alert). Old men who think nothing of having a baby with a young wife when there’s not way on earth they’ll be around for that child’s teenage years or worse. Listening to Billy Joel (who I adore!) - has a 5 year old and he’s 73.

teomama · 25/03/2023 17:51

Having an endless phone call on the public transportation.

Wills · 25/03/2023 17:51

Also very happy for men to have their shirts off but only if we women can take tops and bras off. Also shouldn’t it be mandatory for me to have a tight strap around their chests with shoulder straps that dig into your shoulders!!!

Wills · 25/03/2023 17:52

That’s men, not me - I already have that situation!!!

FurElise · 25/03/2023 17:53

I genuinely thought blokes pissing in public was arrestable as indecent exposure? 🤨 It's also absolutely vile and disgusting 🤢

Wills · 25/03/2023 17:54

AncientBallerina · 25/03/2023 08:28

oh gosh yes, just passive aggression generally. Bloody cowards.

Whilst 90% of the time you’re right, but having faced down someone recently who completely ignored me it was only when I passively aggressively brought out the sarcasm that it got through!

grandehorizontale · 25/03/2023 17:55

Engine revving
Engine idling
Putting feet on the seat on trains

Michelle1964 · 25/03/2023 18:00

“per say” … LOL!!!

Sainte · 25/03/2023 18:10

Swearing on this site and in public and in playgrounds. We have 12 years of compulsory education in the UK yet swearing by ‘adults’ is increasing by those who evidently attended school.
Clothes that are too tight and a persons shape leaves nothing to the imagination.
Those who don’t teach their children basic manners.
Botoxed lips making the person look disabled.
Skirts that are so short, that private areas are seen.
