Things that are socially acceptable but you wish they were not

I feel like a bit of a man. For me:

Men pissing by the side of the road. I have see this twice in the past few days, yet there were public loos close by. If a woman did this people would question her sanity, or at the very least think she was undignified yet for men it's considered normal.

Men going shirtless in public. Do what you like in your own garden, but why walk down the high street etc without a shirt. It's never that hot in England - in fact some much hotter climates actually have dignity laws that prohibit both men and women from even showing their arms or legs. Plus you know, sun burn.

Smoking. I hate walking behind someone who is smoking, it blows back in the face of the person behind and gives me a headache. It's unhealthy, expensive and should just be banged in public full stop imo.

Walking with someone and mid convo they whip out a vape and start puffing on it.

It feels so intrusive and disgusting.

I don’t like going to the beach and being assailed by burning meat smell and smoke. The thread is about stuff we don’t like. Barbecues might not be an issue for you. Fair enough. They are for me.

Oh!

People who spend their free time on mumsnet complaining about truly harmless things. Honestly about 80% of you should take a long hard look in the mirror. The majority of this thread reads like a bunch old women complaining about anything that annoys them about young people. Half of these answers aren’t even things that are socially acceptable anyway, it’s just people moaning about things which don’t harm anybody in any way. Nipples visible through a shirt? Tight leggings? People using your first name? Stopping your trolley too suddenly?!? Jesus Christ get a life. Everybody finds people playing music out loud on the bus annoying - it’s not “socially acceptable”. There are real problems in this world and you lot have gone mad. Praying for all of you. So much jealousy and petty hatred here I’m losing faith in humanity.

Well said - and I would probably be classed as heading towards "old women" territory! As I said earlier, there are a lot of intolerent people on MN.

Wallingtonhall · 25/03/2023 02:58

It’s not that deep. I think it’s healthy to have a moan from time to time. And yes, I know there are bigger things to worry about.

Good for you if you’re not irritated by anything but we can’t be Pollyanna all the time!

The way whenever anything happens now people whip their phones and out and start taking photos, videos. Horrible.

I came on to say exactly this. There was a very minor altercation between two people in town the other day and straight away they were surrounded by hordes of gawkers holding up mobile phones to film it. No doubt it ended up on social media. It's worse when it's an accident and everyone whips out their devices to get a photo. It seems acceptable now to exploit others' bad luck for social entertainment.

Nitgel · 25/03/2023 06:42

I hate those open urinals that appear in London on Saturday afternoons, it's really vile, just build toilets.

Chilloutsnow · 24/03/2023 18:53

Over the past 5 years or so I’ve noticed in certain work contexts it’s okay for the women to openly fart. Now men may do this but I work mostly with women. I just find it gross to be honest but no one really bats an eyelid.

Seriously?

I'd have to say something or walk away!

willowstar · 25/03/2023 06:46

Sniffing. So much sniffing on my train commute. I find it unbearable 😞 when did it become acceptable to just sit and sniff loudly for an hour? And there are lots of people doing it, multiple people in the same carriage. I don't understand.

“Bunch of old women”

People who are Ageists. I pray for them.

Talapia · 25/03/2023 06:58

Smoking , should be outright banned.

Being glued to phones, even in the company of others, at checkouts etc.

Any kid under the age of 1O does not need a phone

Kids being brought up without resilience or boundaries.

Calling people out, storming in,.punching lights out etc.Just have a conversation.

Idling outside schools and parking across people's driveways. Socially acceptable to some, given how many parents do it.

People sitting on the outside seat on buses, and ignoring anyone else who has a greater need of it.

Selfishness, generally. Many people are me, me,.me

Parenting that means children (without SEN), reach school age without basic skills.

Lip fillers, buccal fat removal etc. Just why? We're teaching young people that's it's ok to change just about any part.of their body if they don't like it. What are the ong term risks ?

Putting every single thing you do on social media

The Tory party, full of lying, vile, braying, privileged rich folk. Yet somehow they are still apparently acceptable.

Our NHS being allowed to reach the state it is in. The Tories couldn't get enough of the NHS in covid, times, bit but now the NHS staff are back in their place, saving people's lives and yet being treated like shit.

People googling something:, then telling the Dr, teacher, plumber etc how to do their job.

Dogs off lead walking down the street. I love dogs and own one, but no,.I don't care how well trained your dog is, but it on a bloody lead on the street

From that, ownership of XL bully type dogs and status dogs.

Social class snobbery. People working in McDonalds, supermarkets, care jobs etc. No, they are not thick,.idiots and yet some people treat them like shit on their shoe.

Toughsteak · 25/03/2023 07:07

Gingerism

Jifmicroliquid · 25/03/2023 07:18

IVF on the NHS.
Piercing babies ears- it’s child abuse for the sake of fashion. And it looks disgusting.
Lip fillers and ridiculously fake eyelashes. It doesn’t make you look attractive, quite the opposite actually.

topofbighill · 25/03/2023 07:21

LucyWildeGru · 25/03/2023 01:51

Dogs using our pavements as toilets.

Humans using our pavements for bins.

GotABeatForYouMama · 25/03/2023 07:31

Alcohol.

NellyNoName · 25/03/2023 07:35

Being religious, and raising children in a religion.

Raineth · 25/03/2023 07:40

Putting your house by on the market, encouraging your buyer to spend thousands of pounds on legal fees and surveys, then saying ‘nah we changed our minds and aren’t gonna move.’

MapleSyrupSweet · 25/03/2023 08:10

People spraying deodorant in public changing rooms! I don't want to breathe it in! SO antisocial 😡

MapleSyrupSweet · 25/03/2023 08:11

MerryMarigold · 24/03/2023 18:43

Not Dave, SAVE. But if Dave is your lover, save it for him.

And I don't want to see Dave in clingfilm either!

vera99 · 25/03/2023 08:14

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 24/03/2023 22:24

😆😆😆

You’ve really over-egged the pudding here!

People who come on threads to moan about moaning and make out they aren't moaning nut when they get as old as us they will have plenty to moan about don't worry. And if they are not moaning they will be one of those insufferable people who breeze through life happy as a lark with oodles of friends and lovely children and a perfect relationship and make the rest of us feel like shit. I hate them the most and the ones that end their post with 3 smileys - they are total bastards. 😆😆😆

Oh, and going back to the original post - MEN.

HoneyPotBee · 25/03/2023 08:18

People with young children who think the world revolves around them when they are in shops, cafes or restaurants.

HoneyPotBee · 25/03/2023 08:20

Women who pretended not to understand stand something to make some passive aggressive point. Just make your point like a grown up.

PolkaDotMankini · 25/03/2023 08:21

Drag. I can't wait until it becomes as socially unacceptable as black face.

The imposition of gender ideology on the population at large. Thankfully, the tide has turned on this one.

Men walking away from their responsibilities to their children. It's already socially unacceptable for women to do this.

Commercial surrogacy. It's the buying and selling of babies and women's bodies.

And my judgy-pants one. Wearing thong bikini bottoms everywhere. Yes, you have an amazing arse and I'm envious, but save it for the private villa, not the public leisure centre.

Chilloutsnow · 25/03/2023 08:23

@PolkaDotMankini

Yeah I get this weird feeling around drags. Are they supposed to be funny? It makes me cringe. I know a 40 year old guy who arranged one to come to his birthday BBQ? I wasn’t there. I seen it on Facebook. Whole thing just gave me the ick, it felt wrong. Can someone articulate why I feel like this? Why the fuck would someone arrange for a drag queen to come to their 40th birthday BBQ? A group of hetro drunk men stuffing themselves with burgers and laughing at this drag.

Awful.

Enfys1982 · 25/03/2023 08:23

Young women with ridiculous lip fillers that distort their face and make them look like they’re having an allergic reaction to something.

PolkaDotMankini · 25/03/2023 08:27

@Chilloutsnow for me, it's a caricature of women. It feels degrading.
