What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

Or spout even... but either works.

awaynboilyurheid · 11/03/2023 10:37

Exactly Janiie, he’s paid a fortune to chat about football,, I don’t care if he scored millions of goals football is really not that important, people often forget it’s a game. I don’t want Gary’s views on anything thanks

Oh I do lots of things thanks, I'm a hive of experience and skills. <No need to lower yourself to insulting language just because you cannot defend this highly privileged apparently not very bright man posting goady tweets though>

If he wants to do that I'm sure he could get a job as sports commentator on a private channel. I don't see why we should pay his ridiculous wages.

When has he talked about politics on MOTD?

When has he talked about politics on MOTD?

Maybe we need some fusion football. Philosophy and the beautiful game anyone

And my limited understanding is the offside rule is more contentious than a two state solution for Palestine.

If it’s so crucial for him to air them he can leave the BBC and tweet to his heart’s content

Rhondaa · 11/03/2023 10:58

'When has he talked about politics on MOTD?'

He uses a high profile social media platform to air his extreme views. The BBC does not allow that.

He's free to do so on private fb if he wishes but if he's paid by us then he needs to adhere to the BBCs impartiality rules. His choice but he can't have his cake and eat it.

Gary Lineker's views are not extreme. They are shared by anyone with any humanity.

Depressingly this doesn't include our Government or a shouty but thankfully small percentage of right-wing die-hard racists.

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2023 11:09

The BBC does allow that. It isn't in his contract.

They have allowed this to escalate into a full on staffing crisis.

Marisquita · 11/03/2023 11:10

The relevant section of BBC guidelines for anyone interested re Lineker (emphasis added):

Public Expressions of Opinion 15.3.13

Where individuals identify themselves as being linked with the BBC, or are programme makers, editorial staff, reporters or presenters primarily associated with the BBC, their public expressions of opinion have the potential to compromise the BBC's impartiality and to damage its reputation. This includes the use of social media and writing letters to the press. Opinions expressed on social media are put into the public domain, can be shared and are
searchable.

The risk is greater where the public expressions of opinion overlap with the area of the individual's work. The risk is lower where an individual is expressing views publicly on an unrelated area, for example, a sports or science presenter expressing views on politics or the arts.

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2023 11:12

You sneer and sneer and sneer all you like janiie.

The word I used is at the very most mildly offensive and was a word and phrase you yourself used about Lineker - I was quoting you!

The Tories broke the asylum and immigration system. Just like they broke everything else in the UK.

Here's someone with intelligence who doesn't agree with you ;

He tweeted the views of a death camp survivor.

So we now have those on the extreme right saying that a death camp survivor views are extreme.

Seem Putin still has an awful lot of influence on the current Government.

May have missed it but still not seeing all the many holocausts survivors you said that disagree with GL.

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2023 11:15

The BBC is going to end up like a classroom teacher when they lose control at this rate. BBC employee Richard Osman has just tweeted in support of Lineker, Football Focus has been cancelled , MOTD will have no interviews, no presenters, no commentators. The backlash against Fiona Bruce's words on Twitter grows and the BBC remains impassive.

I last made the mistake of sending multiple students out all at the same time and trying to 'make examples' of them about 25 years ago.

Ha ha i wondered how long it would be before the Tories blamed the current x channel boat crisis on Labour.

Notonthestairs · 11/03/2023 11:21

I once revealed in @thetimes how John Humphrys made money from speeches slagging off the then Labour government. The Tories/Daily Mail squealed about his freedom so he kept his job interviewing politicians on @BBCr4today, unlike @GaryLineker who presents football on @BBCMOTD.

"Here's someone with intelligence who doesn't agree with you ;"

And yet -

"Home affairs select committee chair Diana Johnson says their report found that it was not small boats arrivals which overwhelmed asylum system.

Instead, poor resourcing of system was "significant factor" in asylum processing backlog growing to 160k people since 2013."

I really hope they just get new commentators in. These people surely can't believe they can say what they like when working for a public corporation with strict rules in place.
Final score. I mean without 'sneering at football' who actually gives a rat's ass about who is on these programmes.

Notonthestairs · 11/03/2023 11:31

So it's ok for John Humphrey's (news presenter) and Andrew Neil (news presenter) but not alright for a football presenter?

Yep time for some new people.

If you think about presenters on BBC they have a good gig and stay for years. Hard for others to get a break.

Switch them up

VenAqui · 11/03/2023 11:32

What he shouldn't do is use his license payers funded platform to post divisive and inflammatory rubbish

OMG, The hilarious irony.

The reporters are refusing to report, too. They've dropped the whole show.

I'd pretty much guarantee the ones most incensed by GL's tweet never watch MOTD.

I was thinking that about those most incensed that he is going.

I don’t watch it and couldn’t care less if he presents or not. Actually I’d prefer new talent on all these shows where people don’t show up. Or just can them.
