What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

Marsha, the OP's thread is about the mess the BBC is embroiled in over recent days & she linked to the Bruce story as well as many others, there is no need to have a specific thread, you might as well ask for a specific one just for Lineker.

I guess as this highlights the hypocrisy in the BBC's actions over Lineker, some posters want it shut down.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2023 07:30

I don’t mind there’s not a specific thread but pp seemed to - so…

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2023 07:33

Please don't LOL me. There is nothing funny about the fact that an OP started a thread about the way the BBC treats a number of issues including a highly paid BBC presented minimising domestic violence on a BBC flagship programme and that vanishingly few women want to discuss that aspect , despite using VAWG as an excuse to parrot various racist tropes repeatedly.

It's not LOL , not LOL at al.

Yo cannot go around telling other people to start threads. This one is right here . And the virtual absence of commentary speaks volumes. The BBC's new 'balance' now includes 'both sidesing' DV. And using ' Stanley Johnson's friends' as his 'right to reply'. It's fucking disgusting.

What is going on at the BBC right now?
MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2023 07:34

‘Giver over’ makes me laugh it’s a bit silly.

If you want to highlight on here or elsewhere just do it. I’m sure you’ll get responses

GPTec1 · 11/03/2023 07:35

Hear hear @Piggywaspushed

Disgraceful the BBC say nothing about what she said, which was justifying DV from the pov of the violent thug.

LadyWithLapdog · 11/03/2023 07:54

@Piggywaspushed good post

What on earth are you on about? Are you saying immigrants come here in order to rape 'our' daughters?

I don't think that is being said at all.

Some immigrants that come from a different culture have problems accepting ours, that's a fact.

Seventytwosunsetstrip · 11/03/2023 08:30

Believeitornot · 10/03/2023 21:19

When the Home Secretary was asked about safe and legal routes in a Parliament select committee, she literally couldn’t answer and basically admitted that for some countries, the only way to claim asylum would be to travel here illegally. And that’s for people with valid claims.

The idea of "safe routes" is just leftie pie-in-the-sky.

The logistics of opening up safe routes to the whole world is just ridiculous.

People have always migrated to areas where they think they can have a better life. When populations were small it wasn't a problem - now we have such increases in polulations it is.

We can and do have some already. There could be more, and probably will be, but there will be limits.

Which means exactly as you have now. Safe routes plus people desperate enough to find a smuggler

Rhondaa · 11/03/2023 08:43

'We can and do have some already. There could be more, and probably will be, but there will be limits.'

Exactly. As has been posted asylum seekers and migrants are of course allowed to come and there are systems already in place. It's the illegal bit with boats and gangs that is the problem.

Lineker is just a privileged prat who has no idea and thinks because he scored a few goals decades ago it gives him license to spout crap to his fans.

How many Ukranian people have travelled illegally to UK, are crossing channel in small boats?
Somehow, safe legal routes were available for Ukranians.

He is hugely privileged.

Time for a clear out. Let someone else have a go. Fresh faces etc

Rhondaa · 11/03/2023 08:49

'Disgraceful the BBC say nothing about what she said, which was justifying DV from the pov of the violent thug.'

Why would you seriously think anyone would 'justify' dv?! She was no doubt bound by libel rules.Have you ever seen any TV presenter say 'allegedly' when discussing high profile events or crimes? Ditto. They won't be 'justifying' anything by saying allegedly but they have to abide by broadcasting rules.

Rhondaa · 11/03/2023 08:53

'Time for a clear out. Let someone else have a go. Fresh faces etc'

I really hope so, i hope the bbc dont cave amongst the outcry from lefty celebs and footie fans. Oh but he didn't mention the Holocaust. It's just sickening.

These arrogant footballers earning millions and lecturing others.

Their egos need a kick up the arse.

Marisquita · 11/03/2023 08:59

There is no “libel rule” that required Fiona Bruce to say what she did, quoting hearsay from unnamed “friends” as though it provided some sort of balance. If she needed to make clear that the DV was alleged rather than proven in a court of law then by all means say that. Nothing more was needed.

You really have bought into the culture wars haven't you?

LlynTegid · 11/03/2023 09:02

Greg Dyke interview on radio 4 earlier- spoke a lot of sense.

awaynboilyurheid · 11/03/2023 09:06

Gary Linekar happy to go to Quatar, and say nothing about human rights, no mention of slave labour, employers taking passports away, refusing wages, workers crammed in huts and sent home injured with no compensation.
But suddenly he wants to speak out about human rights?

Arrogant and way over paid for talking about people running about kicking a ball that we can all see for ourselves anyway, it’s like being paid to state the obvious. He won’t be missed nor any of the other presenters who join him.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2023 09:06

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/03/2023 09:01

Isn’t this ‘culture war’ happen regardless of whether pp has bought into it?

It’s all over the media.

awaynboilyurheid · 11/03/2023 09:09

Also this is not a leftie or right wing argument , I’m a total leftie yet think he’s very much in the wrong and good on the BBC.

borntobequiet · 11/03/2023 09:16

I think we are setting up more safe routes though. It was announced the other day

I thought more safe routes were mentioned recently?

“Safe routes” have been announced or mentioned for years now, while in fact safe methods of applying to come to this country have been systematically dismantled with the closure of such services via embassies and consulates.

www.rescue.org/uk/article/claiming-asylum-uk-facts

Note:

There is no safe way to apply for asylum from outside of the UK. That’s why organisations like IRC keep calling for more safe and legal routes, including coordinating with European partners on offering protection to people seeking safety within Europe.

Lineker is just a privileged prat who has no idea and thinks because he scored a few goals decades ago it gives him license to spout crap to his fans.

Oh there's the sneering about football again.

For the record:

^Lineker made his England debut in 1984, earning 80 caps and scoring 48 goals over an eight-year international career. He is England's fourth-highest scorer, behind Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton, and his international goals-to-games ratio remains one of the best for the country. His six goals in the 1986 FIFA World Cup made him the tournament's top scorer, receiving the Golden Boot. Lineker was again integral to England's progress to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, scoring another four goals. He still holds England's record for goals in the FIFA World Cup.
Lineker is also the only player to have been the top scorer in England with three clubs: Leicester City, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur. Notably, he never received a yellow or red card during his 16-year career. As a result, he was honoured in 1990 with the FIFA Fair Play Award. In a senior career which spanned 16 years and 567 competitive games, Lineker scored a total of 330 goals, including 282 goals at club level. After his retirement from football he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.^

A few goals, my arse.

No but ‘we’ should certainly get to decide what we do in our own country and that shouldn’t extend to offering asylum to healthy young men from patriarchal countries who have abandoned their wives, children and elderly to save their own skins. We should however offer asylum to the women, children and elderly while those healthy young men liberate their country like Ukraine is doing 🤷🏼‍♀️

The very worst type of man.

God, who cares?! I can't believe you c&p his footie achievements Grin. He can lecture folk on footie, something he may be qualified to do.

What he shouldn't do is use his license payers funded platform to post divisive and inflammatory rubbish. He needs to think about using own terminology.
