What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

Yes I think you’d end up with safe routes and the boats issue on top.

And the latter would grow as world issues do.

It’s very hard to stop, some countries manage it but it takes a lot.

I don’t think we would have the boats issue on the scale we have it now. I think it would be much reduced and fewer people disappearing into the black economy.

I’m a pragmatic person and don’t think we will ever completely get rid of people smugglers. Never going to happen. The same with all crime - you can’t completely stop it because some humans have criminal tendencies.

So I think the best we can have is a combination of

  • safe and legal routes
  • sensible quotas but based on evidence and are fluid and not hard
  • better cooperation with the EU to help tackle criminals; a sensible grown up conversation around this
  • invest in the home office. I strongly believe that part of the problem is staff cuts during austerity. It always takes resources to do this

🙄
We have safe and legal routes please read posts where folk have quoted numbers.

Sunak had a 'sensible conversation' with macron today. Let's see if Macron can stick to his side of the bargain.

We cannot have thousands of Albanians being exploited by criminal gangs.

The small boats have fo stop there is nothing Hitler like in suggesting that. Disgusting to equate the 2.

@NiceHotCuppaCoffee want a refund off the government for their shameless brexshit disaster ?

I don't know why you don't move to Scotland then and live your Utopia, you can divorce us, rejoin the EU and have your 'be kind' Utopia, you can have all the international men moving in and everywhere mixed sex.

Literally, guys, what does any of this have to do with the OP??

Because that’s why the issue started - GL critiquing government policy. In real life, this is how conversations go!

Ok take Albania. Are you including a safe route from there?

Who gets a yes and what do the nos do

LadyWithLapdog · 10/03/2023 21:19

If it’s refund time, can I have a refund for the money the Tories have syphoned off to their corrupt cronies? Ta. It’s been happening these past 12 years and it’s reached billions.

When the Home Secretary was asked about safe and legal routes in a Parliament select committee, she literally couldn’t answer and basically admitted that for some countries, the only way to claim asylum would be to travel here illegally. And that’s for people with valid claims.

The refugee staying with Gary Lineker wanted to go to university to become a rocket scientist

He's attending university now - presumably he has a very good standard of English already.

Do you think women will vote for Labour even when they still don't know what a woman is?

BBC says no presenters tomorrow for MOTD.

  1. do you realise that some people from Albania have been granted asylum? Recently?
  2. Having safe and legal routes doesn’t mean an automatic yes….

I will because I’m not stupid enough to fall for such propaganda.

Yep. And your point is?

Do think people motivated to come here might do so partly because they speak English? And have ambition? So it’s hardly a surprise!

But the OP was about the BBC... I see you are trying to fight the good fight. I'm pissed off Fiona Bruce is getting off scot free !!

Oh dear. How very sad. The BBC may realise they don't need overpaid, entitled privileged commentators afterall and save license payers millions!

BeverForget · 10/03/2023 21:23

Stop the licence fee.
BBC should stand or fall on commercial appeal.

I’m actually interested, does that mean you would like a sage route established?

So I take it it’s a yes. What do the person who gets a no do? They’re desperate, there are smugglers willing to take their money. Say 10k got entry but it doesn’t help them. Why not another 20k paying as they do now?

Fiona Bruce - her comments were absolutely and utterly disgusting and I was pleased that she was called out on it on the James O’Brien show today.

I will be complaining to the BBC, especially as a child of a household with DV, I found her attitude and tone towards it so minimising.

There!

MOTD without bandits sounds good. Moat bandits are not that good and rarely has anything to add. Highlights show sounds good!

Exactly. Football will go on regardless. Too many presenters loving the sound of their own voices.

Yes we should have a safe route. Then you’re more likely to get people presenting and then you can assess their claim and say goodbye if they don’t meet the standard. Why is that so hard to comprehend?

Did you not see my other points about investing in resources to tackle the criminals and backlogs?

Having no safe route - as we do now - does not help.

Dymaxion · 10/03/2023 21:26

More broadly, the number of people migrating to the UK is also increasing. In the year to June 2022, approximately 1.1 million people migrated to the UK. This is an increase of 435,000 on the previous 12 months, and was primarily driven by non-EU nationals.

I might be wrong, but I am fairly certain that the non-EU nationals figure has increased year on year since Brexit ? Also as I am sure you are aware those immigration figures also include students choosing to study at Universities in the UK ? So if you were to look at those immigration figures in the round by looking at the Governments own immigration statistics, the number claiming asylum would be quite small compared to the other legal routes of immigration ? Most immigration is legal, you might not be happy about it, but that doesn't automatically make it illegal or bad for the UK.

What is bad for the UK is a Government who are either wholly incompetent or who are so disloyal to the country, that they put their own personal gains above that of those citizens who they are paid to represent !
