What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

So true and I'm amazed that people on this thread think he's sincere- utter bollocks
another irony is that the worst anti-semitism is coming from the supposed left/far left- again, I don't suppose our political hero, Lineker, will have much to say about that

Amazing how many don’t engage with proper debate about the asylum policy - and instead prefer to distract and deflect with baseless criticism.

I thought Lineker had confirmed he’d present, has there been an update

Yes he confirmed he'd present it the smug *** . He didn't think for a minute they would dare to sack him 😂

For once, cancel culture has swung the other way and people are up in arms about it? People on the right, saying benign comments have been getting cancelled left, right and centre for ages. Seems only fair to me?

He's an extremely highly paid presenter, working for a impartial broadcaster - and he's anything but impartial. He has a contract and he's not sticking to it. He's welcome to have his views and work elsewhere.

Comparing the migrant crisis to nazi Germany is also highly diminishing to Jews and the holocaust.

100% this. ^ And as a few posters have said, the far left are far more vocal and vitriolic than the far right in many ways. And also, as you said, people are happy for people right wing/right of centre to be 'cancelled,' but are throwing their toys out of the pram when the pendulum swings the other way.

Personally IDGAF if Linekar never comes back, OR Wright OR Shearer. I struggle to find a single fuck to give. Replace all the presenters. They are all overpaid and full of themselves anyway.

I find Linekar nauseatingly smug, and irksome, and he thinks he can say what he wants WHEN he wants. Clearly he cannot, and this has bit him on the arse.

And as you said, it's disgusting that Linekar compared the situation to Nazi Germany. Shame on him.

How hard can it be to comment on a footie match.

I suggest that anyone who thinks it’s easy should try it.

Spoiler: It’s not easy.

To me, the people supporting the men arriving in boats are Male Rights Activists without even realising they are - so open minded their brains have fallen out. Here we have large numbers of youngish men from countries which do not respect women. There is no reason to believe these men are simply not a product of their upbringing and safe to be around us. People argue otherwise in a kind of ‘not my Nigel/refugee’ type argument, are they saying the Afghan women are lying about the sexist society they live in? Simultaneously they’ve abandoned their wives and children, for months to years, in a country ‘so dangerous they had to leave’. Which shows they feel women’s lives are inherently less valuable than their own.

So British women are unsafe, Afghan women are unsafe, and expected to accept it to make sure these men get what they want.

I am not racist or anti immigration and would accept a basically uncapped number of women and children refugees.

But young men? It’s a no from me. There are so few downsides to being a man in a patriarchal country, this should be one of them 🤷🏼‍♀️

'Did you miss the statement by Jewish organisations about the Home Sec?'

Again, we aren't talking about the home sec we are talking about the BBC and Lineker's offensive Tweets.

But many holocaust representatives aren't offended by his comments.
They are offended by Suella Bravermann's policies.

it's odd that lineker doesn't speak out about men in women's sport
he's just saying whatever will give him virtue points

Good point. I wish more men would speak up about this.

'Really, all this is about sneering at football, isn't it...'

I don't mind football. I object to a man getting paid millions of tax payers money to commentate and than think that gives him a platform to tweet inflammatory stuff about 1930s Germany.

Which stemmed from <drum roll>

the Home Secretary’s language!!!

Is GL wrong? Is he….? Really? Describing asylum seekers as an invasion, implying that asylum seekers are “others”. That is dangerous language and that’s why GL said what he said.

Greenfairydust · 10/03/2023 19:51

The BBC has lost its independence and is no longer a public service broadcaster.

It is now the right-wing propaganda arm of the Tory party.

It is led by a Tory with close financial links to Boris Johnson.

I cancelled my TV licence a year ago and no longer watch this channel because I was not willing to see my money go towards paying the salary of people like Laura Kuenssberg and Fiona Bruce who are also a government mouthpiece rather than journalists.

It is really sad to see the BBC reduced to this.

It is yet another part of this country/once respected institution that Johnson and his cronies have managed to destroy and corrupt.

This lot needs to be shown that the majority of us have no desire to live under this type of leadership. Lineker was right when he compared this to Nazi Germany.

I mean. That’s just the biggest load of absolute nonsense I have ever heard. If you said that to me in person, I would laugh in your face.

What nonsense.

Evidence please.

Evidence of what? You want a peer reviewed study about which celebrities are the most sexist and intolerant? Not gonna happen buddy, but I’m not surprised you think it will 😂

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2023 19:53

Interesting rereading the OP, how few of the posters on here, despite wanting to engage on accusing people of misogyny, are keen to discuss Fiona Bruce's words on QT.

Partner and I will never watch MOTD again without Gary, Ian and Alan...

Lifeomars · 10/03/2023 19:54

The BBC is terrified of this government and as for Fiona Bruce, the woman is an ambassador for Refuge and says this on their website:

Fiona Bruce
Ambassador
“I was honoured to be asked by Refuge to become an ambassador and I immediately accepted. Without Refuge, hundreds of women and children would have nowhere to go. No one to help them escape daily horrors in their own homes.”

She could have said "Stanley Johnson was not prosecuted for breaking his wife's nose" rather than going with the line that his friends say it was a "one off", surely if she has connections with Refuge she knows that these things are not "one offs" (and even if it was, it is still inexcusable). It is also a matter of public record that Johnson Snr's wife had a breakdown as a result of his abuse

Believeitornot · 10/03/2023 19:55

In 1930s Germany, the Nazis used the law to gradually excluded Jews from public life, certain professions, and education. The goal of Nazi propaganda was to demonize Jews and to create a climate of hostility and indifference toward their plight…

How is that different to what Suella is doing?

Making asylum seekers illegal, making it impossible for them to work, shipping them off to Rwanda, creating a climate of hostility and indifference.

That is what GL is referring to.

GrasstrackGirl · 10/03/2023 19:55

That’s what comes when its being run by the best mates of Tory Ministers.

Precisely. Clearly the “very vigorous” selection process (made after the not quite so rigorous wink and nod process) was lacking in how to recognise the difference between a moral stance and your paymasters arse.

This. There was an outcry by BBC staff when the current Head was appointed. It has become a Tory government broadcasting company.
