Do You Have A Roast Every Sunday?

I did growing up ( or most weeks at least) but certainly don’t now. It’s probably about once every couple of months. Occasionally have a mini roast midweek. DH really isn’t that bothered & thinks it’s a lot of effort but it doesn’t need to be if you get organised. We’re having a frozen turkey joint today with roast spuds /carrots, stuffing, fine beans, broccoli & homemade bread sauce. I’m about to peel the spuds & carrots to get it out of the way.

Never cook one. We occasionally go out for one.

Hbh17 · 05/03/2023 15:18

Since I got my own place 37 years ago I have never once cooked "a roast" on a Sunday, or any other day - and I'm proud of that! If my husband were that bothered (which he isn't), then he would be perfectly capable of cooking it himself.

LlynTegid · 05/03/2023 15:19

I don't, and now it's only me in the house. Never did when it was several of us. Since wfh came along, have my main meal in the middle of the day seven days a week, and so Sunday lunch is not really different from any other in a way.

No I've never made a Sunday roast. Unless Xmas falls on a Sunday

AnnieMore · 05/03/2023 15:20

Growing up, we had a roast every Sunday without fail. It was rotated between lamb, pork, beef and chicken.

I am in the overrated camp. I just can’t get excited over a roast dinner. My dh is a fabulous cook and his roasts are renowned, but I just can’t get excited over them.

Spanielsarepainless · 05/03/2023 15:22

I had one every week growing up, now I do one for me and DH. Last week lamb, week before was pork, chicken this week. Probably beef next week. It's an easy and delicious meal.

Goodread1 · 05/03/2023 15:22

Yes I do Op,

Most most weeks I do,

And cause I am single and a can't be bothered Arsed to be in the kitchen everything doing this,

Guess what,
I eat out and have delicious Sunday roasts cooked for me in restaurants,
Bonus is I don't have to wash all the dishes afterwards too

I try various different restaurants cafes to see which ones are the best for food menu on offer,

I would like really would to be one of those food critics at restaurants guest houses

Having Sunday roasts in restaurants seems to be quite popular with families friends ect

No, I'm a SAHM with school aged children, I find it easier and more peaceful to do a roast on a week day, Sundays are bolognese or lasange with ragu I've made Friday when we generally order a takeaway.

Reluctantadult · 05/03/2023 15:24

Yes we do! Best meal of the week for the semi fussy kids.

mycatisaloveabledemon · 05/03/2023 15:26

No. Probably once a month for the other kind of roast

Junegirl15 · 05/03/2023 15:34

Yes most weekends until the weather gets too warm. I go a bit over the top and do yorkshire puddings, sausages, stuffing and gravy. If pressed for time I make it a bit easier for myself and get microwave mash and veg. Love it

YellowDaffodillie · 05/03/2023 15:37

I rarely cook a roast on a Sunday unless we have family visiting.

Usually, DS and I eat our main meal about 6pm together and DH eats something else about 10pm because he has issues with food and eating and I’ve given up on him.

sarahh96 · 05/03/2023 15:38

Usually have one every couple of weeks. Roast chicken. Then we can have the left overs for another 2 days. Works out to be quite economical

Jux · 05/03/2023 15:45

I grew up with big family lunch every Sunday. As there were always other family members/friends living with us it was a large affair, sometimes up to 20 odd people. Us kids would be seated at a separate table so the adults would fit round the big table.

I tried to carry that on but dh was very much against it and did all he could to ruin it so I gave up for years. Once we moved here and mum was settled in too (she lived with us here until she died) I got it back, and dh found he rather liked it.

Since mum died, it gone a bit by the wayside again though during COVID it made a bit of a comeback. We eat together most evenings though anyway, and dd's away at Uni, so there's less need to have a big family meal these days. We'll push the boat out a bit when dd's home though, and do full-on for visitors of course.

neitherofthem · 05/03/2023 15:52

We have one every other week or so. Last week we had a casserole, sometimes it is a pie, occasionally something like gammon with mash and parsley sauce, sometimes I strike lucky and somebody else cooks!

cptartapp · 05/03/2023 15:57

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 05/03/2023 13:40

No. Too expensive to do in the oven. It's mostly quick stove-top meals now.

We do ours in the air fryer. Except a chicken.

Rewis · 05/03/2023 16:01

Occasional special treat in a pub. Never had homemade roast dinner.

JazbayGrapes · 05/03/2023 16:30

Nope. Have roast anytime i feel like. Although "traditional" roast i find really boring.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 05/03/2023 16:35

I’ll roast something or other most Sundays through the winter, depending on how many are eating, which can be up to 12. It’s a lovely thing to potter about on a lazy day, bit of music on, having a glass of wine while the house gradually fills with the smell of whatever’s cooking. But my kids are older and/or gone, so my Sundays are a lot more relaxed than they used to be.

Just three of us today and in about half an hour we’re having a small chicken crown with braised lettuce & peas, smashed roast potatoes, lemony gravy, garlic mayo - can’t bloody wait!

Summer we tend to barbecue more than anything else, but we still like to sit around and have a good chat. It’s the day of the week it’s most important to me to have family and friends round the table, regardless of what we’re eating.

Suzi888 · 05/03/2023 16:39

Not every week, but I am doing one now. The oven has been on for hours, I’ve been lurking for hours watching the damn chicken cook.

Free range (I’m vegan but family aren’t). So much meat on it, much better value.

I also grew up with a roast cooked for me every Sunday, either my DM or my aunt. We had one on a Wednesday too.

Smallorangecat · 05/03/2023 16:46

No, almost never, and I grew up having one every week. DC don’t really like it, and it takes a lot of time, effort and pans to be washed up later.

ohfook · 05/03/2023 16:48

Most weeks although if things are tight we'll do mince and dumplings instead.

DesertRose64 · 05/03/2023 16:50

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 05/03/2023 13:45

yes, if you mean a large piece of meat or chicken cooked in an oven. No if you mean a load of unnecessary fiddly vegetables, cooked in a bland way .

Tonight is half a chicken ( there are only two of us) with leeks and preserved lemons in the same dish. Probably frozen peas as well.

If your vegetables are bland you’re not cooking them properly.

ChicagoBears · 05/03/2023 16:51

We go out for lunch every Sunday but it’s not always a Sunday lunch, maybe once a month.

Pipsickl · 05/03/2023 16:54

Most Sundays we do. It’s my fave meal of the week and if we don’t have one for a couple of weeks I get sad.

today we had salmon with roast dinner trimmings (even though that’s not a real roast imo) because veggies, roasties and yorkshires are always beloved in our house.
