Do You Have A Roast Every Sunday?

I did growing up ( or most weeks at least) but certainly don’t now. It’s probably about once every couple of months. Occasionally have a mini roast midweek. DH really isn’t that bothered & thinks it’s a lot of effort but it doesn’t need to be if you get organised. We’re having a frozen turkey joint today with roast spuds /carrots, stuffing, fine beans, broccoli & homemade bread sauce. I’m about to peel the spuds & carrots to get it out of the way.

It really wasn’t a thing when I was growing up (in Glasgow). When I moved to England I noticed the idea that you should have a ‘Sunday dinner’ (I.e. roast) was more prevalent.

I don’t want to eat a roast every week tbh.

megletthesecond · 05/03/2023 13:56

No.
Just Xmas day and maybe once or twice in the winter.

GobbieMaggie · 05/03/2023 13:56

Yep, usually.

No but mainly due to lack of time. Today we have a pottering at home day so I will be making one. I do love a roast and manage to get the most veg in of any meal I cook.

We typically have one most Sunday’s during the colder months as it’s really comforting. But once the weather improves and we’re out in the garden etc, we tend to switch it up to bbq’s, salads, burgers etc

This is what we do, we have small dc who love a roast but come nicer weather more likely to be a bbq.

MyLittlePonyWellies · 05/03/2023 13:59

Yes, we do most weeks in autumn/winter.

UWhatNow · 05/03/2023 13:59

Only when all the adult children are back and not doing anything - which doesn’t happen often. No point for the two of us.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/03/2023 13:59

Not as much as we did, joints are too expensive now and whole chickens. I currently have lovely fat chicken drumsticks (10 for £5 from the butcher) in the slow cooker with a gravy. Much cheaper.

NoCatsToday · 05/03/2023 14:00

Yes. Absolutely. Partly because it is one of the easiest things to cook and everyone will eat it.

Exactly the same with us.

We do every Sunday evening.
Not quite sure why as dd2 only really likes chicken, and ds would far prefer just the vegetables.
But it's quite nice (between the "don't give me any meat" comments) because it's the one meal we all make an effort to come and sit down together and we have a bottle of lemonade and sometimes pudding too.
Actually I have spare eggs, so I might make chocolate soufflé tonight.

Crunchymum · 05/03/2023 14:05

We did growing up. God I got so bored of them in the end (although I appreciate all the time and effort mum went to, understand as we all got older and had different schedules it was probably the only meal we all sat down to and would give my right arm for another Sunday roast with my mum who isn't here any more 😢)

I have one fussy child and one who is on a medically restricted diet so a roast - or variation thereof - is one of the few meals they all eat. I may not do a full on roast, some weeks it may be jacket spuds, roast chicken and veg, but we have some kind of roast at least once a week.

Flightcrewstew78 · 05/03/2023 14:11

We do most Sundays in autumn and winter.

Large joints of meat are extortionate now so we go for less expensive cuts and fancier veg.

We always do enough to have for leftovers though with veg or salad on Monday which is good bc it’s quick and easy and I have a weekly evening class then.

Decafflatteplease · 05/03/2023 14:13

Sort of, not necessarily a roast but usually a bit more of a special meal on a Sunday. Roast are pretty easy I put the meat in the slow cooker and air fry frozen roasties it's quite simple

Or we have things like a lasagne, something we wouldn't normally have midweek

Today is toad in the hole with venison sausages for the adults and chipolatas for DC.

kernowpicklepie · 05/03/2023 14:15

Started to but I did a toad in the hole with roast potatoes, cauli cheese, homemade gravy etc. a month or so ago as sausages needed eating and now we have that every Sunday instead of other meat

Pourmeanotherwine · 05/03/2023 14:16

We always have meat on a Suunday (often veggie/ vegan in the week). Not always a roast though, sometimes do a stew or a shepherds pie.

EspeciallyDedicated · 05/03/2023 14:25

No, hardly ever. We had many years of both DC doing sport on Sunday afternoons but never did before that either. I like one occasionally but definitely not weekly. One DC doesn't like them at all. We didn't when I was growing up either.

LAlady · 05/03/2023 14:26

Yes we do. Although if it's really hot in the summer I don't do one.

Slimjimtobe · 05/03/2023 14:28

Most weeks - though some it’s a version of it (I am dieting so today I did a large tray of tonnes of types of roasted veg) dh had pork chops and I had a chicken fillet (he had new potatoes)

last week I did the whole roast beef and homemade Yorkshires but I do the beef in the slow cooker and peel the veg the night before and leave in bowls in ice cold water )I make the batter and stiffing the night before too)

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/03/2023 14:30

No. Today we are having steak pie (not home made), chips, peas, carrots, green beans and gravy. We could have mash but DS doesn't particularly like it and he is eating at home tonight.

Dizzydebbie88 · 05/03/2023 14:32

No,
Far too much fat/calories.

frozendaisy · 05/03/2023 14:32

Almost every Sunday during colder months, it's too hot to have oven on this long when it gets warmer.

Cook a big piece of meat that can be used Mon/Tues as well.

Whole family loves it. Home made yorkshire puddings non negotiable!

It makes us all sit together talk, play a game, reset before the working week. My favourite meal of the week in winter.

CornishGem1975 · 05/03/2023 14:32

Most weeks, love them and love the long lazy process of making them but we do them less over the summer.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 05/03/2023 14:32

No, especially not when it's too hot to cook comfortably. It's something we might have if we're going to be in on a Sunday afternoon, as we do all enjoy it. Useful to have the leftovers for food prep as well. We pretty much never cook a roast that's only one meal, iyswim. Always at least one of the carcass for stock, leftover veg for bubble and squeak, the scrappy bits off the chicken carcass for chicken fried rice or even just leftover meat that'll do for cold cuts or curry.

RosieRainbow1986 · 05/03/2023 14:33

Usually throughout the winter but if we've got a day where we've got a list of jobs to get done then we won't as it's quite time consuming!
