Do You Have A Roast Every Sunday?

I did growing up ( or most weeks at least) but certainly don’t now. It’s probably about once every couple of months. Occasionally have a mini roast midweek. DH really isn’t that bothered & thinks it’s a lot of effort but it doesn’t need to be if you get organised. We’re having a frozen turkey joint today with roast spuds /carrots, stuffing, fine beans, broccoli & homemade bread sauce. I’m about to peel the spuds & carrots to get it out of the way.

Perhaps once a month. I don't find it much trouble and I really enjoy it. I would do it more often but my fussy eater children aren't keen.

TheLathums · 05/03/2023 14:36

I'm supposed to be doing one today, but honestly CBA. I have a habit of having these great intentions. It's not really the cooking that demotivates me, it's all the washing up.

southlondoner02 · 05/03/2023 14:37

No, also in the overrated camp. DP makes them occasionally but it's one of my least favourites. Mind you didn't often have them growing up so I don't have that tradition

Almost always although today is an exception as I have made a steak and mushroom pie still with roast potatoes and vegetables.

In the summer we will usually barbeque but it doesn't feel like a proper Sunday.

Floralnomad · 05/03/2023 14:40

No , we have a roast chicken occasionally but more likely to be when our son is coming home as neither myself or husband are big meat eaters .

AtleastitsnotMonday · 05/03/2023 14:50

I'd say 3 weeks out of 4 in the colder months. Like many others have said its good if you have a family with different preferences, it all goes in dishes in the centre and everyone can pick the bits they enjoy. It's a meal we all eat together and tend to linger over it longer than week night meals.

People saying they don't want to eat the same thing week in week out, we don't! Different meats and different sides. We tend to rotate between chicken, beef and gammon but season differently using different herbs and spices. We tend to have roast potatoes most weeks but that's because they are loved. Other than that I make lots of different stuffings, some weeks make Yorkshire's, I might make bread sauce, pigs in blankets etc. Gravies get different flavours, I serve different condiments. Veg is easy to keep different each week there's so many to choose from and so many different ways of cooking them.

I'm a big veg fan so do lots of veg in various ways.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 05/03/2023 14:51

And yes we would always have a roast on a Sunday growing up.

BlinkinggLightt · 05/03/2023 14:52

No, we only do one for special occasions.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 05/03/2023 14:54

Full roast and a homemade dessert/cooked pudding every Sunday without fail.

Ireallydohope · 05/03/2023 14:55

Yes because I find roasts easy to cook and like having the leftovers

ClaraThePigeon · 05/03/2023 14:57

People saying they don't want to eat the same thing week in week out, we don't! Different meats and different sides.

It's still just slightly different versions of the same thing though so not that different to me. I'm sure it's great if you really love roast dinners but I don't especially love them so a weekly variation on a roast dinner wouldn't personally appeal.

dontgobaconmyheart · 05/03/2023 14:57

Definitely not.

Nobody in the household is overly fussed about them so it's more of a few times a year thing for us, every few months perhaps if someone requests one.

For me the faff is more timings and washing up than it is any actual cooking or required culinary skills (admittedly out roasts are reasonable basic). DP usually does the whole thing these days if we do have one anyway.

InterstellarDrifter · 05/03/2023 14:58

Kind of. We do a roast chicken with potatoes and veg every Sunday.
It's easy to prep and I just get on with other stuff or just relax while it's cooking.
It's the one meal that the dc love too so win win in my book.
Can't be doing with all the faff of what people call a proper roast.

SquigglePigs · 05/03/2023 15:04

No, not at all. Barely half a dozen times a year. I love it when we stay with my in-laws though because we usually have one there. I enjoy eating it but I can't justify the amount of my day it takes to prep/cook. Growing up Mum would often do one on a Monday night instead.

TheVanguardSix · 05/03/2023 15:04

Never. I’m not British, though I’ve been here 25 years so I should be a roaster! I used to make them more many years ago but we’re just not that into them. We’re not huge meat and potato eaters apart from during the holidays.

cocksstrideintheevening · 05/03/2023 15:05

No. We have too much on on a Sunday and my kids don't particularly roast meats. The do love a veggie roast though.

Mid week I'll do a cheat roast - aunt Bessie's and bistro with a pan fried chicken breast.

We're having pho tonight.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 05/03/2023 15:06

slimjimtobe had a giggle at “ stiffing”!! 🤣

OP posts:
wonkylegs · 05/03/2023 15:06

Nope and never grew up with one either.
We have roasts fairly often but it could be mid week if I have a bit of time or could be a partial roast (we had roast chicken and mash yesterday)
I don't tend to link particular food to a particular day

RRRException · 05/03/2023 15:10

Nope - have roast chicken maybe once every couple of months

Occasionally I will buy beef but we generally have that in a salad eg tagliata style

We have chicken souvlaki tonight made a chicken thighs

Generally trying to eat less meat now tho

Whendovescry03 · 05/03/2023 15:11

We have one most Sundays in the Autumn and Winter, but DH is an amazing cook and makes a delicious roast. He spends half the afternoon in the kitchen making it with a few beers, and it's also DS's favourite meal.

Fabled · 05/03/2023 15:12

No. I love a roast but none of us feel like one every week.

ThisIsWednesday · 05/03/2023 15:13

Nah. DH and/or I sometimes work on Sundays so roast day is whatever day we want to. Sometimes that's once in a month or we could have roast chicken on a Monday and be serving up a nice beef on a Thursday that same week. I've always got a couple of beef joints in the freezer thanks to half price offers every now and then.

GotABeatForYouMama · 05/03/2023 15:14

We had one every week growing up (unless we were on holiday). I don't like roast dinners and DP isn't that fussed about them so we haven't had one for years now.

PillBoxes · 05/03/2023 15:16

Only have a lettuce leaf and a tomato here on Sundays. But I can't get any of either at the moment so it's a crisp sandwich instead. 😉

Ragwort · 05/03/2023 15:16

No ... but I'd like to & don't find them difficult at all .. I love a roast and have happily done them just for myself but DH not that keen so I do one maybe every 3 weeks .. unless I am on my own and I cook up a big feast for one Grin.
