I haven't eaten properly for months & my house is a tip. I hate being me.

I live on my own in a tiny one bedroom flat. I have adhd. I also have depression.
I have absolutely no interest in cooking food. I don't remember the last time I ate a proper meal. I don't eat at proper meal times.
Yesterday I ate 3 donuts, 2 packs of cadbury chocolate fingers and 2 bars of galaxy chocolate. That's it.
Today I've had quaker golden syrup porridge, tesco meal deal wrap and crisps, box of fingers, bar of galaxy chocolate and 3 potato waffles (not together,.obviously). Weirdly tho I've actually lost 1.5 stone since October.

My house is also an absolute pig sty. Haven't done any laundry for a few days but laundry basket is empty because my dirty clothes are all over the floor. Haven't washed dishes for a few days (not that I've used many). But I have no motivation to do it.

I have depression but it's controlled and I don't feel like I'm going through a bad patch.

I am so so so so tired all the time too. I've had a cold this week that hasn't helped but I have been going to bed around 9pm, waking around 1am then 5am for toilet, then up for the day about 8am so really I'm getting enough sleep so why am I so tired.

I don't know how to get out of this rut and to start eating better. I go the supermarket and don't have a clue what to buy other than junk food. I seem to have forgotten how to eat normal. It doesn't help that food is so expensive.

Don't even know what I want from this. Just so tired.

You're doing great. I would definitely recommend an iron supplement maybe with vitamin D and b12 too to get your nutrients and energy up. I started taking ferrous fumarate and I was like a different person after a week.

cptartapp · 05/03/2023 19:19

You could well be anaemic, diabetic or have vitamin D deficiency with those symptoms. Get a raft of bloods done as a first step.
Well done for today.

A trick I've learnt is you can microwave loads of things that claim can't be. Especially if you have a steamer type lid.

Today's diet:

Breakfast:
Lidl special K and unsweetened soya milk

Lunch:
Two salad rolls
3 biscuits

Snack:
Fruit juice

Dinner:
Veg stir fry

The stir fry was a pre-prepared lidl packet I microwaved for three mins in a bowl with rapeseed oil.

Hi OP

I have ADHD and my life is in shambles too.
I need someone to nag me basically, I've tried all techniques lists reminders but they all depended on my brain implementing them so yeah .. you know what happened.
I need someone to tell me to get off the Internet. To go to bed. To eat something that's not pringles or pastries or some other crap.
Anyway in what have I got to lose edition - if the same might work for you, I'd offer to do it if you reciprocate.
(Yes I'm desperate.)

Saturday82 · 05/03/2023 21:12

I use a free app called Habit Hub for a daily tracker for different goals. Except my 'goals' are basic life things like 'shower' or 'take berocca'.

It's good to see how often I manage it.

IncessantNameChanger · 05/03/2023 22:44

I struggle with staying tidy and self care too. I find the method of grabbing five things and putting them back into their proper homes works. Tiny little spurts often makes a big difference. Put the washing basket in the middle of the room and chuck things in throughout the day. Set the timer on your phone for say ten minutes and be ultra productive. Then timer for ten to sit down and do nothing. Good luck

Just an FYI, rapeseed oil is one of the unhealthiest things you can eat

Saved this thread as some good tips - I am exactly the same at the moment, house a mess, eating total crap and binge watching TV - have been like this since New Year.

It all seems so overwhelming sometimes, I’m living in total chaos.

Sometimes even taking my bin out feels like a big achievement.

Its a horrible way to live especially as I know in my case it’s totally self inflicted.

Need to use this thread as motivation to get a bit more in control.

How is this helpful?

This is a thread about getting some nutrition quickly and easily rather than relying on grabbing biscuits and chocolate. Because ADHD can be a bloody nightmare to feed yourself properly with.

A bit of rape seed oil on a stir fry is absolutely fine. It’s not even true that it’s ‘one of the most unhealthy things you can eat’. That’s just nonsense.

Do proper research as I have before coming on here and saying it's not true. Everyone can benefit from this info, not just the person I replied to.

You are peddling misinformation.

it is objectively true that a bit of rape seed oil is not one of the worst things someone can eat.

Then there’s how utterly tone deaf you are to the thread itself or the OP’s problem.

Seriously, go and ‘educate’ people about the evils of cooking oil somewhere else.

I am with you eating spoons of sugar is probably the worst you can eat. My Ds has eaten a jar of chocolate spread as a meal ..so vegetables cooked in rapeseeed would have been an amazing choice in comparison.

I've just had a 20 minute panic tidy! My mum text to ask if she could call round. I've picked everything off floor and put in bags and thrown in a cupboard. Will sort it all out... one day haha.

Love that you've made progress already - well done!!

Do you do podcasts? I cannot easily process audio, but can do better when my eyes and hands are focused, so I use them as a kind of circular motivation - I put on a podcast and tidy. I have to keep tidying to allow me to focus on the podcast, and I want to listen to the next episode so it motivates me to start. This one is brilliant - she's perfect for an ADHD brain and seems to explain all the things neurotypical people take for granted. I started with the podcast, from the beginning, and then after a while bought her book, read it and did the 28 day challenge (it took me about 3-4 months). Now I don't do those four habits every day but it's pretty engrained that that is where I should start. It has made a huge amount of difference and I have stopped decluttering by shoving bags of things in cupboards never to be seen again. Grin

And definitely look into ADHD medication.

Is your Mum judgey or would she help? Maybe she could help you just get on top of things- just be careful there isn't fiid waste in the bags as you will remember them when they start to smell

Love a panic tidy. Me and dh both have adhd. If the house is looking messy, we both say we need to invite someone round so we can have a panic tidy 😂

It isn’t. It is the second best oil after olive oil. This from a sheet given to me by an NHS dietician.

Can you talk to your mum about what’s going on?

I’m going to guess this is some socially-mediated based-on-googling panic about erucic acid. Rape seed oil can contain this and there’s some evidence that higher amounts of this may be harmful.

It’s lukewarm googling-for-panic news because the Ukraine war has disrupted sunflower oil supplies so people may be consuming more rape seed oil than before.

The Food Standards Agency has published a detailed risk assessment of that found that “the frequency of adverse reactions in the general population to potential increased consumption of erucic acid from refined rapeseed oil to be negligible so rare that it does not merit to be included.”

The risks for babies and toddlers (especially formula fed) are higher at very low rather than negligible.

Which is to say, it’s simply not true that rape seed oil is done awful substance no one should consume. The risks of arsenic in rice are probably considerably higher. Maybe the poster will start rushing on to threads to tell people rice is one of the worst things they could eat too. 🙄

Retractable · 06/03/2023 15:39

Note, commercially cultivated oil seed rape is specifically bred to have low levels of erucic acid.

There are legal limits for erucic acid in rape seed oil for human consumption and it seems most supply contracts specify significantly lower levels than the legal maximum.

Of course, lots of online sources will insist that it’s inherently awful because it’s highly processed and horrible and ‘inflammatory’ and ‘full of chemicals’ etc. But ‘research’ drawn from those sources is better suited to those who like to sport tin foil hats generally.

Well done OP!
Would your DM help or judge if you explained how things are?

mathanxiety · 06/03/2023 16:50

Hope you're having a nice time with your mum - could you ask her to roll up her sleeves and give you a hand?

ponyinmud · 06/03/2023 18:01

I haven't time to read the thread, but I've read your posts op.

I have ADHD too.
It's fucking hard.
'Normal' motivations and rules don't work for us.
I can't imagine how difficult it is to have depression on top.

So first of all, massive congrats cos so many people with ADHD can't manage to work. It's extra exhausting for us - especially if we are jobs we have to mask.

Cut yourselves a break.
When you go to the supermarket, start small. I exist on posh ready meals from M&S and their salad bowls/poke bowls/fresh soups.
I don't care what other people do, it's not what I'd choose to eat - I'd love to be able to meal plan and prep those meals (I'm actually a really good cook sadly!) and work full time and look after myself and my home and everything else we have to do/should do.

ADHD is a disability.

You can't judge yourselves on what NT people can achieve with their eyes closed.

Can you claim access to work or PIP and use it to pay for a cleaner or someone to help you keep ontop of housework?

I ate an entire packet of biscuits today (period started) so yesterday was definitely healthier.
