To nobody’s surprise, the frantic pace of this latest game means that the last thread is full and (as far as I can see) <polishes lorgnette> we don’t yet have a successor. So, off we go with a Brunswick Lateral to

Russell Square

OP posts:
ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 24/10/2023 12:45

Quite. And from there we can sashay elegantly to

Plaistow

I think in my absence (sorry; anyone who has ever become entangled with the Morpeth under-secretary in the matter of the repayments will know), we've taken on a few of the Chilean Concordance rules? Not complaining, you understand, just making sure I'm on the same page as you all.

With that in mind, I have to say
South Ealing

TragicMuse · 24/10/2023 20:24

Chilean Concordance notwithstanding, I like the cut of your jib @MarkWithaC. Very neat.

Oxford Circus. Those who were at the St Albans quarter-finals back in the summer of '76 will recall the combination of Ambre Solaire and dry hosepipe was a heady combination. The Bish was levelled more than once. Though that could have been the Mint Juleps which were so refreshing and so plentiful...

LlynTegid · 24/10/2023 20:36

I thought the London Overground rule might have to be used, but then the move of @TragicMuse put a stop to that.

Warwick Avenue it is then.

HazelBite · 24/10/2023 20:40

I think Uxbridge would be logical here

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 24/10/2023 21:09

When in doubt

Turnham Green

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 25/10/2023 07:02

Ravenscourt Park, as I cannot remember the name of the other station nearby.

DuckonaBike · 25/10/2023 11:18

Once again, Lyn, you are not as green as you’re cabbage looking. I’ve been caught out by the French Defence before, but not this time.

Ealing Broadway should sort everything out nicely.

MarkWithaC · 25/10/2023 11:23

I'm going back to the London Overground rule (thank you for reminding me, Llyn), albeit without the usual, but optional, Prismatic. That is (obviously) so I can play Bushey.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 25/10/2023 12:07

Hmm. I’m not convinced of the legality or sanctity of that last move. Prendergast in ‘47 gave the definitive ruling on Prismatics, as I’m sure you will recall if you were there.

Marble Arch

OP posts:
MarkWithaC · 25/10/2023 14:05

I've read about Prendergast in the histories (not meaning to sound ungallant), but even taking that into account, the Leftward Breakaway recognises my move. If I've read the 2019 update correctly.

Assuming I'm clear to continue, I am going to essay a half-pin to
Aldgate East

DuckonaBike · 25/10/2023 21:48

Well that’s some daring play Mark! But I’ve spent many a long winter evening curled up with Prendergast, and I think you can just get away with it.

I’m going with a Fosbury Flop to Farringdon.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 25/10/2023 22:39

Good shot, DuckOnABike. A very well-executed change in tempo.

Fulham Broadway.

By the way, has anyone heard from the Colonel lately?

OP posts:
MarkWithaC · 26/10/2023 10:26

Thank you, Duck.
To avoid any further controversy, I'm playing a simple demi-shift to Chigwell.

Oh, and the Colonel and I are… well, a bit quiet with one another this weather, what with the Bath coach trip and everything.

FinsburyCircus · 26/10/2023 12:36

Ah, the elegance of that last move reminded me of the concluding passages of play in the famous '74 game in Barcelona. Then, of course, the Undersecretary countered with a very dangerous Hounslow Hop and the ensuing kerfuffle nearly killed the entire Argentinian team.

To avoid such a contretemps, I think the best response is the onward shunt to Surrey Quays which brings us into much safer waters. * *

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 26/10/2023 12:48

The Under-Secretary always liked to live (and play) close to the edge. The Argentinian team were surprisingly gracious in the circumstances, although it’s long been rumoured they were paid handsomely for their silence (allegedly by some of the Colonel’s financier friends).

Elephant and Castle

OP posts:
MarkWithaC · 26/10/2023 15:06

I could tell you some stories about a particular financier friend of the Colonel and the Argentinian team mascot, but – eyes on the prize! All Saints (windward, naturally).

FinsburyCircus · 26/10/2023 16:54

Well, with the wind in our sails and the air humidity at just the right point, conditions are perfect for my signature Rickmansworth Reversal all the way to Park Royal

    • And before you start quoting the 94 Andalusian Articles at me, I'll have you know that move was complimented by none other than the Colonel himself at the Blenheim Palace Meet last year.
ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 26/10/2023 17:08

Yes, but the Supreme Grand Council stripped the Blenheim Palace meet of whatever official standing it might have had, once the episode involving the Major General, the principal bassoonist and the turbot came to light.

North Ealing

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 26/10/2023 17:23

I was once approached about joining the Supreme Grand Council and thought it over. My invitation was withdrawn after playing a move to Highbury and Islington using what was then called the North London line rule.

Ealing Common

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 26/10/2023 18:32

You had a narrow escape, LlynTegid. Most players of the game of games think of the Supreme Grand Council as Groucho Marx thought of clubs.

Bank

OP posts:
HazelBite · 26/10/2023 19:00

Gosh this game has moved apace since I last checked in!
After much thought the most logical move is Wembley Park

DuckonaBike · 26/10/2023 22:08

I agree with Maud; I’d be wary of joining the Supreme Grand Council. The dress code alone is enough to put me off.

I’m going to counter Hazel’s move with a Hobb’s Cross to Sudbury Hill.

TragicMuse · 26/10/2023 22:11

Oh I don't know, I'm quite partial knickerbockers. And I think I'd suit a ruff...

Finsbury Park

FinsburyCircus · 26/10/2023 22:55

When it comes to the Supreme Grand Council, I usually come back to Quentin Turpentine's famous description in that grandest chronicle of the game of games, the Mornington Mercury - 'a lot of hidebound old dinosaurs who can't tell their District from their Circle'

And re the game, an assured Borough
