If you are in the shoes off brigade

If you invite someone to your house, say as an evening guest , here is the scenario:

The guest has made an effort to dress up for the evening, say a nice dress, updo, jewellery etc. She turns up at your house where you ask all guests to take their shoes off. This guest turns to a carrier bag she has on her, and withdraws a pair of very nice shoes that she wishes to wear with her dress. They are not stilettos, so won't damage any wooden floors. She shows you the soles and explains they are specially clean ie have not been worn outside and have been wiped down to make sure they are spotless. She says she wishes to wear them as they are part of her outfit and she does not wish to be discomforted by having to go barefoot.

Would you acquiesce. If not, why not?

Gross. That cat is bringing in all sorts.

we are generally a shoes off house, but we are very chill about it, and don't mind if people keep them on, especially downstairs. Unless muddy, then off please.

It really frustrates me that I am expected to walk around at someone's house barefoot.
I have very uncomfortable feet when walking barefoot. I always wear birkenstocks indoors as they give me arch support. And barefoot/just tights is COLD.

When I go to my brothers eg at Christmas, they have new white carpet throughout. I took a pair of shoes and cleaned them including soles to wear as indoor shoes as I couldn't walk round barefoot all day. They were fine with that.

Please don't offer me slippers. That is horrible. I hate the idea of wearing someone else's slippers, and also, I am a woman with size 10 feet and I do not feel like explaining that to you to tell you why the slippers you are offering me are too small.

I am just falling around laughing at the idea of washing the cat's feet every time it comes in. I take it you have never owned a cat!!!

CandleInTheStorm · 27/02/2023 12:32

Reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw in the episode where the host made her remove her shoes and her Monolos got stolen! 😆

Caviarandgelatine · 27/02/2023 12:31

So the pristine indoor shoes that you took to wear aren't actually that pristine, if you wear them around your own filthy house

That is a nasty assumption to make about my house, seeing as you don't know me and have never been to my home.

Um you said about your cat coming in with its muddy paws. The floors aren't going to be clean are they, not between shoe wearing and animals

Floors are regularly cleaned, thanks.

I own 2 cats, of course their wet/muddy paws are wiped when they come in, why would I let them wander round my home wet and muddy? Confused

Whilst wearing shoes? 🤣

EnglishRain · 27/02/2023 12:35

We are a shoes off household but my main worry would be pointy heels. We have pine floorboards in the dining room which is also a hallway. I'd think it a bit odd that someone was so desperate to wear shoes in that instance but I would also be fine with it.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 27/02/2023 12:36

Caviarandgelatine · 27/02/2023 10:01

Well, I'd let her, but privately I'd feel a bit irritated because it's unlikely she's never worn them outside. Her lengthy explanation of how they're clean shows she knew it was a shoes off house and that was important to the owner, so for her to think that her outfit trumps that is pretty self centred.

I agree with this. Thankfully no one who visits me is that precious about maintaining 'their outfit'. Not at the cost of disrespecting me (the house owner/friend/family) and my choice to keep my floors clean.

Botw1 · 27/02/2023 12:37

@Caviarandgelatine

I don't enforce shoes off or clean my floors that often

😱😱

dontgobaconmyheart · 27/02/2023 12:37

I think I'd find the whole performance of that wearily pretentious but ultimately sure, if that person can't cope without their shoes on because they feel they've curated something that wonderful and need it validated then why not. My floors are nothing to write home about so I couldn't care less if anyone removes their shoes so long as they make sure at the door that they are clean underfoot and deal with it (and the consequences) if not. I've never asked anyone to take their shoes off but usually get asked and just say to do whatever they're comfortable with and offer a place to put them if they feel like taking them off.

I do think it's rude, to know that someone has asked for shoes off in what is their home, and to say no or manipulate them into pretending it's fine when you already know it isn't unless you have a valid reason (not sure vanity is one).

You do often find that people who are so uptight about their appearance actually live in filthy homes.

Not where I live.

You saying it doesn't make it so

Where you live is irrelevant.

In winter, Norwegians will arrive at any do carrying their indoor shoes in a bag; they regard outdoor shoes inside as a mark of barbarism. Which it is.

This.

So dirty to wear outside shoes in the house. And dog owners, do you not wipe your dog’s paws when they come inside?

You really have got it in for me, haven't you, Fox? Why are you being so rude on this thread? Are you like this in real life too?

OP posts:
Botw1 · 27/02/2023 12:40

@FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks

Its relevant to the idea of it being disrespectful

If no one finds it disrespectful then it's not.

Botw1 · 27/02/2023 12:41

Where are the 'no one is militant about shoes off' posters?

🤣

Because if you have a cat flap, the cat comes and goes, and comes and goes and comes and goes endlessly. Often when we are out and often in the middle of the night. That is kind of the point of a catflap!
No cat I have ever owned would willingly submit to having paws washed anyway.

And actually my cat very rarely has actively muddy paws. He lands on the turtle mat under the cat flap which absorbs the worst of the water/mud, and then as soon as posisble he sits down and washed his own paws, because cat's hate being dirty.

Lentilweaver · 27/02/2023 12:42

Am guessing you don't have any Asian friends, OP?

Chewbecca · 27/02/2023 12:42

No, they are slippers. All soft with leather soles, not suitable for outdoor s.

Abouttimemum · 27/02/2023 12:44

I’d be happy with that but I wouldn’t expect an evening guest to come dressed up - house slippers would be fine 😂

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 27/02/2023 12:44

Crumpetdisappointment · 27/02/2023 11:19

it is so naff imo to ask people to remove their shoes

I think it's naff and entitled to go against what the home owner wants. And filthy.

Vitriolinsanity · 27/02/2023 12:45

I'm with you OP, I love clothes and shoes and if I'm invited to a home I do make an effort for the occasion.

If it's a DVD and wine chat night I would actually take my slippers. However as I go outside in them that would clearly also cause some people (although I'm racking my brains to come up with someone I actually know) conniptions.

I don't ask anyone to take off their shoes. I don't mind at all unless they're muddy boots, but then I also (despite having a clean and tidy home) don't make rules for guests.
