Was this nurse rude?

Littlestdove · 18/02/2023 11:25

I want to preface this by saying I am in pain so that’s not helping but yesterday I went to A and E with pain under my right rib cage- I believe it could be my gallbladder as I have a polyp and both my parents have had theirs removed . It was an extreme stabbing pain that took my breath away. My blood pressure was 170/90 and I just felt awful. No temp tho.

I was given morphine and some buscopan and then told they couldn’t ultrasound my gallbladder until the morning so they’d send me home with strong painkillers and to come back to A and E if my ultrasound showed any stones and the polyp.

So que to this morning, I’ve been up all night in agony trying to make it through to my ultrasound. Ultrasound shows stone and polyp. I rebook into A and E and first thing the nurse triaging says is

”back again? You’ve been in no end lately”

so I said, well yes I was in yesterday and told to rebook in if I was still in pain and my ultrasound showed a stone and polyp.

”You do know you can see your GP for Abdominal issues?”

and I said yes, I realise that however it was a sudden intense pain

”Well I’m just letting you know for further information”

meh. I’m sat here in pain and now just feel like a time waster.

So you are better qualified than the A&E doctor? And common sense outweighs medical knowledge about potential complications of polyps and gallstones in the pancreas?

The very fact that you claim this demonstrates exactly how little common sense you possess.

All I am saying is that I agree with the nurse. I don't think she was rude she was telling it as it is.

SirChenjins · 19/02/2023 10:34

Read the OP again very carefully and slowly @abmac95 , take time to understand and digest the information, (paying particular attention to the instructions that the OP was given during her initial visit to A&E) and come back and tell us what you think “it is” that the nurse did when saying what she did. Once we see where your comprehension skills have failed you we’ll be able to explain it again to you in words of one syllable .

Oh dear.

If it wasn’t so dangerous on a public forum, I’d almost laugh.

Please nobody put their health and life at risk by paying any attention to this.

But that isn’t all you’re saying is it? You’re coming out with some bizarre nonsense that you see as common sense (which is anything but). The OP was told to return and the nurse most likely got her confused with someone else as it had been two years since she’d been there before this.

iklboo · 19/02/2023 10:43

Accident means a broken bone, a car crash not a sore tummy!

I think you're overlooking the 'emergency' part of A&E. As well as the entirety of OP's posts. Gall stones, gall bladder blockage or infection is not 'a sore tummy'.

MissWings · 18/02/2023 11:44

@Turtleegg

No actually it isn’t logical. It’s severe pain that can often be life threatening particularly if the gallbladder gets infected. The pain needs managing whilst acute, and you need scanning. It’s not advice it’s negligent advice and the nurse was rude.

Agree.

My sister went in after being treated via GP for gallbladder when the pain got too intense to manage.

She was transferred to a ward and it was removed within days.

itsgettingweird · 19/02/2023 11:11

viques · 18/02/2023 11:43

Well A and E aren’t going to be able to whip your gall bladder out while you are lying in cubicle three are they? I am not sure what you want them to do, surely you need to be getting your gp to follow through on the a and e diagnosis, pushing for a referral to the gastro intestinal team and topping up the pain killers.

They kept my sister in, transferred her to a ward and whipped hers out.

So yes, actually, they can and do.

But as long as your rude and condescending post made you feel better eh?

@abmac95 "My main qualification is in common sense! Its a very rare qualification on here!"

Oh the irony 😂

WiIson · 19/02/2023 12:31

I presume you mean they whipped it out in operating theatre as emergency surgery, not on the ward.

Well yes clearly - I didn't think that would need clarifying.

It's was very obvious the point I was making.

If she's known for her attitude it's likely she's been coached and warned previously so there's a decent chance she would get sacked. As a hospital director I'd be more focused on how to support staff so they're not getting to a point of frustration with patients.

She wont be sacked for a minor complaint which may have been unintentional on her part and with mitigating factors such as being busy etc. Even with previous warnings they will not be serious enough. They may even take her off triage to give her rest from the role for a bit - we're all human.

In terms of supporting staff, thats down to local leadership of the A&E team, they know their staff best. At director level we can give access to agency staff, funds for training and provide good occupational health services such as staff counselling, wellbeing sessions etc. But what directors cant do is sort the national issue out such as pay, insufficient numbers trained staff coming through the system and one third of patients not able to be discharged due to a crisis in social care owing to cut backs. Basically we are all trying to manage a very bad situation at hospital level with solutions needed nationally and politicians using the NHS to point score.

Hiya all,

just wanted to update and let you know I’ll be having my gallbladder out tomorrow.

Feeling a lot better with antibiotics and morphine and just spending a lot of time sleeping and reading now….I’ve barely been on my phone/mumsnet which I know will appease the “if you’re in hospital you should be laid like a corpse brigade”

I’ve also given @abmac95 the opportunity to FaceTime me in my hospital bed since they truly believe they’re so informative on the matter. Will see if they respond!

thanks all for your kind words.

Not acceptable, it's not like you go weekly, you followed the direct advice given.

Report her, and tell them you expect disciplinary action. Her behaviour is dangerous, some would feel bad and go home. Imagine she did that to someone who later collapsed or worse?

PuppyMonkey · 19/02/2023 15:06

All the best OP. Flowers

abmac95 · 18/02/2023 11:31

How did you get to hospital though? Is your pain so severe that you called an ambulance and they took you to hospital? Did you pass out? If you answered no to both of these questions them imo you don't need to be at a & e. Thats probably what the nurse was meaning. Is it that bad that you are passing out, can't walk or talk? a & e stands for accident and emergency. you don't sound like you fit either category from what you have said and the fact that you are well enough to be posting om mumsnet about it.

Are you a doctor? Do you have know something about the OPs health other than what she posted here?
If you answered no to both of those then you should not be telling people on the Internet when they should and should not be going to A&E. That is for the people who know what they are talking about to decide, and they told her to go back.

Good luck! 💐

It would be good if the poster could learn something from this and not be so ignorant/arrogant and get some self growth and perhaps make a proper effort to tap into their ‘common sense’. 🙂

itsgettingweird · 19/02/2023 15:25

Well I'm glad you went to a and e as advised then!

This is what happened to my sister and she bounced back quite quickly after surgery so I wish you well.

Don’t tell me, you also went to the school of hard knocks and the university of life?

CoorieInByTheFire · 19/02/2023 16:22

@abmac95 will be shocked to find out that I regularly watch tv, read, FaceTime, and even manage to laugh whilst I’m in intensive care. I can also walk and have a shower. Maybe I shouldn’t be in there at all because I definitely wouldn’t meet their criteria for being in hospital wasting a bed let alone in intensive care.

SirChenjins · 19/02/2023 16:25

Hope everything goes ok with your surgery tomorrow - keeping everything crossed for you Flowers

Tilllly · 19/02/2023 16:51

Gallstones are agony. You'll feel so much better after the surgery OP.

@Littlestdove if you happen to roll past A&E on the way to theatre give the nurse the finger
