Was this nurse rude?

I want to preface this by saying I am in pain so that’s not helping but yesterday I went to A and E with pain under my right rib cage- I believe it could be my gallbladder as I have a polyp and both my parents have had theirs removed . It was an extreme stabbing pain that took my breath away. My blood pressure was 170/90 and I just felt awful. No temp tho.

I was given morphine and some buscopan and then told they couldn’t ultrasound my gallbladder until the morning so they’d send me home with strong painkillers and to come back to A and E if my ultrasound showed any stones and the polyp.

So que to this morning, I’ve been up all night in agony trying to make it through to my ultrasound. Ultrasound shows stone and polyp. I rebook into A and E and first thing the nurse triaging says is

”back again? You’ve been in no end lately”

so I said, well yes I was in yesterday and told to rebook in if I was still in pain and my ultrasound showed a stone and polyp.

”You do know you can see your GP for Abdominal issues?”

and I said yes, I realise that however it was a sudden intense pain

”Well I’m just letting you know for further information”

meh. I’m sat here in pain and now just feel like a time waster.

Hope you're in less pain now Op and yes she was very rude and unprofessional.

I'm sick of hearing how we shouldn't bother the NHS or GP's with our legitimate concerns.

WE PAY FOR THE SERVICE SO IF WE CAN'T USE IT WHAT ARE WE PAYING FOR?

How did you get to hospital though? Is your pain so severe that you called an ambulance and they took you to hospital? Did you pass out? If you answered no to both of these questions them imo you don't need to be at a & e. Thats probably what the nurse was meaning. Is it that bad that you are passing out, can't walk or talk? a & e stands for accident and emergency. you don't sound like you fit either category from what you have said and the fact that you are well enough to be posting om mumsnet about it.

Gosh the ignorance on here is unbelievable. What medical background do you have to say only people in ambulances are serious enough to bother A&E? Or that you have to be so incapacitated you can’t text, read or talk? Utter garbage. I went to A&E in my friend’s car after work. Didn’t stop A&E from admitting me that night on to a ward where I ended up having major surgery. Let’s hope you’re not in the habit of giving people advice.

🤣🤣🤣

Gosh. It is frightening that there are people like this around.

OP - the nurse was negligent in her duty of care. Sorry you had to encounter that.

This poster and the other one sound so unbelievably ignorant I wonder if they’re doing it deliberately? No one can be that dense.

DarkDarkNight · 18/02/2023 14:32

I would report to PALS. It’s not on to talk to people like that. Yes there are time wasters in A&E but you weren’t there for attention or painkillers. They could put someone off who is genuinely in need of help.

DarkDarkNight · 18/02/2023 14:33

If you were relying on an ambulance you wouldn’t get far these days. People in extreme need can get to A&E via a lift.

Jackienory · 18/02/2023 16:51

I would let it go.

What absolute rubbish.

It's 'cue', not 'que'.

LadyLolaRuben · 18/02/2023 19:50

Hospital Director here. Report the nurse. She wont get sacked but she will be counselled regarding her attitude and may think twice in future. Chances are, she's done it before and is known for her attitude.

If she's known for her attitude it's likely she's been coached and warned previously so there's a decent chance she would get sacked. As a hospital director I'd be more focused on how to support staff so they're not getting to a point of frustration with patients.

This is utter nonsense. Of course A&E is not restricted to those who can only get in by ambulance and are passing out. Think about what "accident" means.

Accident means a broken bone, a car crash not a sore tummy!

ProtectorExtraordinaryOfTheCantonsOfNim · 18/02/2023 12:02

What are your medical qualifications? Because the medically qualified person who saw her yesterday told her to come back to A&E if the scan showed stones or polyp and you're now telling her to ignore that advice. I assume you must be a consultant gastroenterologist at the very least?

My main qualification is in common sense! Its a very rare qualification on here!

you are lacking in it I would say. But they won't be able to help you in a and e with that unfortunately.

HateEatingInTheDark · 19/02/2023 03:33

I’v had similar

‘You look so well’

‘You could see the GP’

‘This is an A&E department’

I just roll my eyes and say ‘look at my medical record and just book me in to see a doctor’

exactly, looking well and god forbid 'walking in' means nothing in many scenarios.

Why do you down play so much? It’s very odd. Sore tummies could be anything from trapped wind to cancer yet you seem to insist that anything other than total
paralysis is deemed serious enough to go to A&E. There must be a reason behind your attitude, what is it?

don't bother trying to work it out @BellePeppa a total waste of time.

Ha you’re right. For someone who says they have common sense they haven’t shown any yet and probably won’t, or more likely can’t.

abmac95 · 19/02/2023 02:42

No, accident does not mean a broken bone. If I accidentally burn 50% of my body but don't break any bones, does that mean I don't qualify for A&E. The point is that it is for any sort of accident. the fact that after your accident you can get to hospital without an ambulance doesn't disqualify you from A&E.

As for the sore tummy, equally that doesn't disqualify you. If you are in agony as OP was, that is plainly indicative of something seriously wrong, and is absolutely something A&E should be looking at. In OP's case, she was also specifically told to come back to A&E if ultrasound showed stones or a polyp - rightly so, because gallstones are potentially dangerous. Are you saying you know more than the A&E doctor about what A&E should be dealing with?

Xol · 19/02/2023 09:21

abmac95 · 19/02/2023 02:44

My main qualification is in common sense! Its a very rare qualification on here!

So you are better qualified than the A&E doctor? And common sense outweighs medical knowledge about potential complications of polyps and gallstones in the pancreas?

The very fact that you claim this demonstrates exactly how little common sense you possess.

MissWings · 19/02/2023 09:22

@abmac95

The only inherent talent you have is being an ignorant twat.

turrrniiipz · 19/02/2023 09:27

Ignore the self righteous twonks reading the rules of a&e.

A sudden very intense pain can't really wait for the weekend to be over then phoning the GP to battle for an appointment for a week on a Tuesday.

The NHS is on its arse, we all get that, but A&E is still a service that needs to be available for people that are in genuine need.

SirChenjins · 19/02/2023 09:30

Yes she was rude - and obviously hadn’t read your notes when she was dishing out substandard medical advice, otherwise she would have seen that 1. You don’t keep going to A&E and 2. Were specifically told to go back to A&E if the ultrasound showed what it did. I would report her for her both failures.

Some posters on here have such limited comprehension skills they shouldn’t be allowed near a keyboard.

junebirthdaygirl · 19/02/2023 10:01

My dh woke up with a savage pain and because he was in the house on his own drove himself to A& E. No way could he wait for an ambulance. It was gallstones but his pancreas was also affected and it was a very definite emergency. If some urse had pulled him up because he didn't arrive in an ambulance he could have been in big danger.
That nurse was extremely rude and totally overstepping the line. Don't let it turn you off going if you are in an emergency again as it could be a matter of life and death.
