Thread 5 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 07/02/2023 14:43

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads (thread 4).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

I've stopped caring pike. She's a dishonest bully, anyone dumb enough to believe her 'teeny weeny me, look what the meanies said' schtick isn't worth worrying about.

and I'm shortly off to grapple with real actual nettles in order to make some of that soup!

UnfortunatePoster · 04/03/2023 12:35

Hi all - if you feel you might be tempted back over there to see what's being spoken about, and would rather not (and the reverse for those of them who definitely do read this thread, human nature innit), I can highly recommend blocking the site. Instructions for blocking in Edge are here: www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/how-to-block-websites-on-microsoft-edge?r=US&IR=T

I've added these lines to my hosts.ini file:

Poison is as poison does.

In other news I’ve promised to make tutti frutti ice cream with my children today. When did angelica become so difficult to get hold of? It used to be available alongside mixed peel and glacé cherries.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 04/03/2023 12:37

Bloody hell SinnerBoy. How can the half way decent people stick it?

I know, they stay corralled on their own threads and don't see it - that was me at one time - though there were also moments when the stone got turned over and the nasty slimy things underneath got exposed.

Pity really.

MissLawls · 04/03/2023 12:40

I am sorry they are lying about you Lawlsie, it is horrible to see people talking about. you but even worse if they are spreading lies that are being believed.

Thanks. I think generally speaking being lied about is the most difficult thing to deal with. I haven't named the person who did it and I won't.

MissLawls · 04/03/2023 12:43

How can the half way decent people stick it?

Because they need it. No other reason. We don't. Let's be grateful for that eh?

And now I'm off for my twice-weekly trip down memory lane that is Pick of the Pops. Remembering easier times through music helps me deal. And roast chicken tonight and a old Morse on the TV. Marvellous.

Have a lovely Saturday afternoon and rest of the weekend.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 04/03/2023 13:13

Ooh I love tutti frutti ice cream. You might be able to get it in an Italian delicatessen, if there's such a rare place near you, as I think it's common in Sicilian cooking. One can still get it online but that's not much help for today, is it? My mum had a single piece of Angelica that lasted my childhood - used at Christmas for decorating the trifle. I didn't realise it tastes nice until I was quite old.

SqueakyDinosaur · 04/03/2023 13:18

The next item down in the search is a KILO of the stuff. I mean, you'd have to make provision in your will for who gets what's left, wouldn't you?

SinnerBoy · 04/03/2023 13:18

None of the supermarkets have it, but Amazon have it. Tesco does have an Angelica Malbec....

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/03/2023 13:19

One option is that angelica is very easy to grow, though that isn't much help in winter.

Bloody hell SinnerBoy. How can the half way decent people stick it?

I don't know, although quite a few of those were banned afterwards.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/03/2023 13:22

I'm currently tackling an unpleasant job, cleaning scale insects off the Thai lime plant, along with all the sticky scale insect shit. There are eleventy millions leaves to check and clean, and thorns to avoid. Had to do the same with a client's lemon tree this week too.

After that, I'm going to make some kimchi as we're getting through a lot at the moment. Is it addictive or something?

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/03/2023 13:23

I should bloody well think so too!

You can get nematodes for that.

Anyone fancy a 1-bed, terraced gothic castle? www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/132074525#/?channel=RES_BUY

duc748 · 04/03/2023 14:10

Looks like it was a busy night last night! I read Jts's extended whinge, and wow!

Generally, I'll just say this: I always thought that 'Fottie' clique were a charmless bunch.

Thanks, Kuc, I shall get some of that! The plant has been relieved of scale insect and is currently in the bath drying out after a lukewarm shower. It looks so much better.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/03/2023 14:16

I saw that 'castle' yesterday and was gobsmacked at what has been done to the house. Who would buy it, you have to wonder. As for what was the garden, well!

SqueakyDinosaur · 04/03/2023 14:33

I really don't think talking about the other place, in terms of groups or individuals, is helpful here. I'm glad the new team have got it up and running, and I know it's been hard work at times. Still pondering whether I see myself participating again.

Meanwhile, cleanse your property palate here: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/125320076#/?channel=RES_BUY

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 04/03/2023 14:46

All about Angelica. www.nordgen.org/en/plant-portraits/norwegian-angelica-2/

I didn't know there were two different forms - I'm pretty sure the one I grow is the (inferior) hollow-stemmed variety - its sap still has that lovely scent.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 04/03/2023 14:48

I must be a shocking snob. I prefer the East Coker castle.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/03/2023 15:43

That's a much nicer castle, but a smidge beyond my budget.

artant · 04/03/2023 15:55

I wouldn’t actually want to live in either of those castles but the Somerset one does have a lovely garden.
