Yes I'm sure there are plenty of businesses in England, Wales and Scotland that would love the same access. Maybe industry will start a campaign for all areas in the UK to have equal access to export markets. That might be interesting.

I'd be really pissed off if I were a scotish whisky producer being stuck with all that lovely brexitty red tape and extra costs while my northern irish whiskey competitors had barrier free trade.

Friend of mine has a small family business making products for a fairly niche market dominated by Germany, Austria and The Netherlands. Excluding the USA the market in the rest of the world is probably about the size of those 3 countries together and their main competitors are there. Brexit has hit them really, really hard. She would love that access but sadly Northamptonshire isn't in NI.

IClaudine · 28/02/2023 16:23

No 10 desperately trying to hold the line that Brexit is benefiting the UK. What is good for NI wouldn't be right for the rest of us, because the people spoke in 2016 and. ..oh I can't be bothered trying to make sense of it.

IClaudine · 28/02/2023 16:27

Meanwhile Gove 🤮🤢🤮has been rummaging in the skip for some ideas to recycle.

We need to, particularly after Covid, get back to an absolute rigorous focus on school attendance, on supporting children to be in school. It is often the case that it is truanting or persistent absenteeism that leads to involvement in anti-social behaviour.

So one of the ideas that we floated in the coalition years, which the Liberal Democrats rejected, is the idea that if children are persistently absent then child benefit should be stopped. I think what we do need to do is to think radically about restoring an ethic of responsibility.

Notonthestairs · 28/02/2023 16:34

So instead of looking at the underfunding & lack of resources of CAMHS, the stretched SN systems, the cutting of school budgets and the impact that has on pastoral care etc etc they decide to cut child benefit?

I'm sure Mail readers will thoroughly approve.

Piggywaspushed · 28/02/2023 16:37

Goodness. That's appalling. They already redefined persistent absenteeism to include more children.

"Wonderful, fierce articulate. Such a sad contrast with what's ruling us now."

Yes it highlighted Boothroyd's thoughtfulness in comparison with the vacuity of Braverman etc.

Agree.

So, Sunak says that being in the single market and UK makes Northern Ireland 'world's most exciting economic zone'.

If only there was a way to have the same thing for the rest of the UK. Is there some sort of scheme we could sign up to? 🤔

Yes I heard that on BBC4 this morning.

I actually agreed with what he proposes for NI and how it benefits them and keeping the peace is fundamental.

Shame they can't see how it benefits the rest of the UK to have the same thing.

Piggywaspushed · 28/02/2023 16:46

It's a bit like GPs and the sick notes. Getting people to do their dirty Capitalist work. The whole thing relies on schools telling tales at an individual level. I can't see how that works. Or how it's GDPR compliant.

Yep.

Don't fund the services needed to support.

Cut money to those already struggling to survive and pay ever increasing bills Angry

I missed around 50% of my secondary education due to undiagnosed autism and bullying. Not sure how financially incentivising my parents to be angry with me would have helped.

Colin from Portsmouth wants the rest of Britain to have what NI has.

I love Exploding Heads - I have no doubt there will be a DJ somewhere receiving similar calls.

Just watched last night's Peston. Steve Baker seriously claiming the government getting this new agreement on the NI protocol is on a par with getting the Good Friday Agreement. FFS. Can't tell the difference between agreeing to something that stopped people being bombed and agreeing to import spuds without so much paperwork.

Perhaps we need to start a campaign to become part of NI. That could work.

If the whole of the UK became NI I bet the DUP would still not be happy.

When he talks of an ethic of responsibility, does it extend as far as not having law breakers in Downing Street?

Well.
To point out the fucking obvious...child benefit isn't paid after a child reaches age 12

When faced with threats of fines from the EWO parents generally laugh, state they are on UC and that they can pay £2 per week

Piggywaspushed · 28/02/2023 21:53

Thought it was paid to 16? 20 if in education?
