Good thread on the inherent conflicts between Brexit and NI.

"It's tedious having to repeat ourselves every time Protocol on IRL/NI hits UK headlines (so many past threads...) but bottomless pit of Brexit dishonesty & incompetence makes the task unavoidable.

So... a few simple bullet points, reminding us how to refute common ERG/DUP lies:

Another Tory club, the 92 Group are clearly rattled by Patriotic Alternative etc - they are intending to press Sunak on the small boats bill in PMQs.

"The group includes the likes of John Hayes, who of course is the closest of allies with Suella Braverman. Some MPs speculating tonight that the Home Secretary may well be quite happy with such agitation if it means her small boats bill is expedited. PM made it a top 5 priority."

The more I read about Scottish politics the more I realise how little I know.

Whilst I disagree with Kate Forbes views on abortion and same sex marriage (as I understand it) I suppose at least she's been candid. More than can be said for a lot of other politicians.

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2023 08:22

I think what some non Scots don't realise is candidness is a Scottish ting. The Scots tended to like Sturgeon because she was candid and forthright. In the vox pops last week, they actually struggled to find anyone who didn't admire her. A lot of the more misogynistic bitching about her in the English media comes from this trait, I think.

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2023 08:30

Just to be clear on Forbes, the majority of Scottish Christians support gay marriage, so her view isn't even one that reflects the majority of those who share her faith. I looked her up and she is indeed a member of the Free Kirk.

Notonthestairs · 21/02/2023 08:59

I guess she can only be judged on her words and her votes (or abstentions).

DuncinToffee · 21/02/2023 09:13

No doubt about that and I think that was reflected in the speed support was withdrawn.

The oven-ready deal they all signed

twitter.com/Steven_Swinford/status/1627935217620074497?t=K4Qjg2emGOOfNz0F2ZZK-Q&s=19

Exclusive:

  • Ministers say they will quit is Sunak’s Brexit deal jeopardises NI’s place within UK

  • PM spent several hours with Tory Eurosceptics yesterday

  • He told them no deal is done; they told him he ‘hasn’t a hope’ without DUP support

Her views will certainly be a test to see exactly how single issue some GC feminists are. I , for one, couldn't vote for a leader of a free and modern country who was so obviously anti women in her views on abortion, regardless of the GRA debate. We'll see. I suspect she will withdraw her candidacy. Which will also be problematical as will be framed as intolerant of her religious views, misogynistic or bullying. Already so much racism and Islamophobic whataboutery about Humza Yousaf on Twitter. It's depressing.

mibbelucieachwell · 21/02/2023 11:24

It'll be interesting to see the extent to which it comes down to the SNP leadership candidates' strategy for trying to get independence. Humza is on the fence re the election being taken as a de facto referendum, Forbes is the opposite and Ash Regan is clear that she would continue the de facto referendum policy.

Sturgeon is marmite. She has many devoted followers but is seen by others as overly controlling, cunning and aggressive. And of course, caputured by the trans allies.

The contrast between her covid communications and Doris' helped her, but when the longer and harsher restrictions in Scotland continued without any tangible benefit she must have lost some support.

SNP politics in general seems to be to be seen to be more progressive than whichever government is in Westminster, at any cost.

Chevyimpala67 · 21/02/2023 12:48

How utterly depressing

DuncinToffee · 21/02/2023 14:09

A Whitehall assessment of the impact of the controversial legislation has been branded "not fit for purpose".

NEW: A @GoodLawProject challenge against Met inquiry into Boris Johnson’s attendance at lockdown parties is in High Court tmrw.

Focuses on police's failure to even send ex-PM questionnaires for gatherings in Nov & Dec 2020, when other attendees got them & were ultimately fined.

On a small point of order, she isn't as marmite in Scotland as MN and the English press suggest...

But, yeah, the SNP,and so by extension Scotland and the UK, is in for some turbulence.

mibbelucieachwell · 21/02/2023 15:58

@Piggywaspushed The impression I get here in Scotland is of many people really genuinely loving her, but also of people thinking she's dreadful and disliking her as a personality.

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2023 16:16

Yes, those people exist , of course they do but the popularity ratings are strongly in her favour.

Blossomtoes · 21/02/2023 17:09

Five convincing wins during her leadership with vote percentages any Westminster leader would donate a kidney for - she must be one of the most successful leaders in recent history, that doesn’t speak of unpopularity to me. I had enormous respect for her intelligence, eloquence and quick thinking until the trans debacle so did a lot of women I know. Compare and contrast her with our last five PMs, she’s in a different league.

The Royal College of Nursing has paused strike action after Health Secretary Steve Barclay "agreed to enter a process of intensive talks"

Yes I heard that earlier.

Discussions on pay, working conditions and improving productivity of the nhs.

And they said they'd never negotiate (hoping the strikes would go away or they could make them illegal!)

Chevyimpala67 · 21/02/2023 20:55

No choice, have they? The anti strike law is ridiculously flawed. The nhs workers have huge public support 🤷‍♀️

Blossomtoes · 21/02/2023 21:05

You can tell the May elections are appearing on the horizon.

Notonthestairs · 21/02/2023 22:57

As I understand it the Treasury are £30 billion better off than they had expected. Let's hope they use that flexibility wisely. Heaven knows they wasted an awful lot of time dragging their heels.

Barclay will be busy - The BMA have asked to meet with him tomorrow - the say the meeting is a last chance to avoid March strikes.

DuncinToffee · 22/02/2023 15:14

Asked whether there is any evidence of actual in-person voter fraud in the UK (official figures show just one conviction for it at the last general election) Rishi Sunak's spokesman says that voter ID is required to guard against "potential" fraud.

There have been more convictions for Tory MP's breaking lockdown rules than there have been for voter fraud since 2017
You can fact-check this here as there have only been 4.

Why are there no guards against "potential" Tory fraud then?

Is everyone enjoying the thread about the second coming of Johnson?
It does seem to have attracted some interesting posters.
