Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

Gently rubbing something silky on my upper lip, and rubbing my feet together (my daughter does this too and I remember my mum doing it!)

Blueberrywitch · 03/02/2023 23:12

Bunk beds. Impossible to have a bad sleep on a top bunk!

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 03/02/2023 23:12

The smell of fresh coffee and pipe tobacco.
Radio 4 playing quietly. If I’m ever staying alone overnight anyway - at home or away- listening to radio 4 in the background stops me feeling anxious.
Friends, Gilmore girls etc are my go to tv programmes but actually if I want to feel really safe anything soothing like GBBO or even strictly.
camping when it’s raining outside.

Commonsensitivity · 03/02/2023 23:13

Oh I also like the sound of the binmen wagon reversing early in the morning and the orange lights flashing through the blinds. It's reassuring they are doing their regular job whilst im still in bed.

When I had a milk delivery, I also really liked hearing him stealthily deliver the milk at 3am.

I work four days and on my midweek day off have a lie-in. Usually about 9.30 my cat comes in and gives this joyful yelping sound (I can’t think how else to describe it) and launches herself onto me. She’ll normally curl up on my back and we snooze together for a bit. My DP has been up, fed her, and left for work, usually he will have stuck on a wash/dishwasher etc, and it just feels so cosy lying there with warm cat and the sounds of the house.

We have a lilac tree in the garden which is beautiful and smells amazing. I know summer is coming when it starts to bloom, and the long school holidays.

The 'Wycliffe' theme tune. I like to pretend it's 1994 and I'm middle-aged, sitting in my cosy living room on a Sunday night with a cup of tea watching it, preparing for another week.

I was 10 in 1994 and hated shows like this but now I can't get enough of them.

Lovejoy is another one.

tomissmymum · 03/02/2023 23:26

Biting my baby finger - have done it for years when falling asleep.

A friend who always calls me lovie; every time I hear I feel all safe and snuggly.

Driving in the dark.

Hearing cars go past at nighttime …

trythisforsize · 03/02/2023 23:28

Football on the telly in the background on a Saturday afternoon while I'm pottering about.
A rainy day when you don't need to leave the house.
Hearing my little boy humming to himself in his room.

keeprunning55 · 03/02/2023 23:28

Watching Modern Family cozy in bed with my dd.
Splashing in the pool
primary school playgrounds

DominoBlue · 03/02/2023 23:32

A sleeping bag zip or a tent zip.

SheSeemsToHaveAnInvisibleTouch · 03/02/2023 23:37

Literally any song sung by Phil Collins

baconisgoodforme · 03/02/2023 23:37

Oh and the smell of crayons and watching Johnathon Creek

SheSeemsToHaveAnInvisibleTouch · 03/02/2023 23:40

Oh and doing a really well formed poo. Like a 4 on the Bristol Stool Chart 💩🥰

Hups · 03/02/2023 23:41

When I drive home to visit my parents and I see the ' welcome to hometown ' sign.
Listening to the wind howling or the rain battering the windows when I'm tucked up in bed.
Smelling pipe smoke, it reminds me of my late wonderful grandpa.
Taking my dog for a late walk round the streets on an autumn evening, when it's dark but mild and has been raining.

RaininginDarling · 03/02/2023 23:46

What a lovely thread.

The smell of coffee brewing.
The sweeping beeps and chirrups when the housemartins and swallows return.
Gravel underfoot
Tinkling streams
A happily vibrating cat
A wet dog nose nudge
Barley shivering in the breeze
Magic hour
Ticking clocks
The satisfying soft clump of a fridge door or car boot closing.
Hot buttered toast
Post-pool tiredness
Street lights reflected back from wet pavements

One of the very early Picturehouse theme tunes used to take me to a wonderfully comforting place. I used to sit in my cinema seat and really relax. I wish I could find it again. It's been changed many times and I haven't been able to get it back. I'd have it as my ring tone and feel instantly relaxed every time someone rang.

WhiskersPete · 03/02/2023 23:54

I love this thread.

Rosa1211 · 04/02/2023 00:11

The crackle of my duck down duvet as it settles around my face.
Street lamps lighting our main road when it's snowed heavily and no traffic is about. Makes me feel as if everyone is at home, safe and well.
A dreamy feeling when anybody is trying to tell me how to get to a certain place and is drawing a map on a table top with their finger.
Tea and toast at three or four a.m. when the house is asleep.
Tucking a stray curl behind my granddaughter's ear.
A tower of unread books makes my tummy do cartwheels as I anticipate reading them in bed.

Seeing buses in the evening with the lights on inside illuminating the passengers

I love buses at night with the lights on.

It’s in the calm app

Thank you! I have the app, had no idea this delight was in there!

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/02/2023 00:24

The first series of Outlander. It’s very fairytale like.

Brill Bryson’s a short history of everything. This is particularly good but I think easy read science is great at reminding you you are a tiny cog whilst being awed by the wonder around you.

scrambled eggs on toast or solders and boiled eggs. Cereal with top of the milk. If I could have a bunnykins plate, bowl and eggcup without ridicule I probably would.

Flannel sheets. Extra points for stripey. I wouldn’t actually want to sleep on them regularly mind you.

Swimming in hotel pools really early when it’s only you, and you know you are saying hello to another day of sun and peace in a bubble of calm before everyone crashes in.

Stone circles

Swinging on a swing

The smell of leather. The smell of the perfume I wore as a teen. Putting on clothes warm from the drier. The smell of face powder like my granny wore. Sharp fruit spread (so much better than jam) on hot buttered toast, or marmite obviously. Marmite on buttered toast with a cup of tea should be available on prescription. Same for honey on toast. My mothers flapjacks which were borderline liquid due to the amount of golden syrup and butter. Rock cakes warm from the oven. Drop scones. Cheese and tomato sandwiches. cut into triangles for preference. The sound of lawnmowers in summer. The sound of kids playing outside in summer. A pint in a sunny pub garden. The sights and sounds of cities waking up on sunny days - waiters putting tables out and all that. Rubbish trucks out and about when walking home at 4am. Lying in thick grass. Watching the sunset in silence with someone.

darisdet · 04/02/2023 00:25

On the subject of TV themes I remember a distant Inspector Dalgliesh was it? That was always a comfort though I haven't heard it in years.

darisdet · 04/02/2023 00:27

Shroud for a Nightingale apparently.

Giggorata · 04/02/2023 00:31

Lots already mentioned, but certainly the Shipping Forecast.
Also being under a tree canopy, glorious colours, looking up at the stars, the evening birdsong and changing sky, the faint sound of distant trains at night, ditto the purr of the milk float and the muted chink of milk bottles when it's still dark.

I used to love hearing the foghorn at night when I lived by the sea, but I don't think they use them any more. It made me feel secure and warm, somehow.

The little noise that a contented hen makes. Hens generally, really.

Watching the swifts every summer, glad that they've made it and enthralled by their flying skill.

I still like to boil tea cloths, etc, which I tell everyone is for cleanliness and whiteness, but is really just for the comforting smell.

My weirdest comforting feeling is aircraft turbulence! I feel bizarrely happy and peaceful if the plane hits turbulence, no matter how bad it is. The motion of it gives me a prickly scalp and puts me into an almost zen state of relaxation where I could easily drift off to sleep. I have absolutely no idea why this is as I’m really not a confident flier at all!

Me too. But only if the plane is big and flying fast. Not if it is small or declerating.
