CAP, FoM, SM, QMV, CFP, EEZ & CPTPP.

Just realised FoM is obviously Freedom of Movement.

CardinaldeRichelieu · 06/02/2023 19:37

CAP Common Agricultural Policy
FoM freedom of movement (as you say)
SM single market
QMV qualified majority voting
CFP Common Fisheries Policy
EEZ Exclusive Economic Zone
CPTPP Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership

Thank you very much. SM also obvious in hindsight!

One topic in your link caught my attention -

Mike Park, the chief executive of the Fraserburgh-based Scottish White Fish Producers’ Association, ... says most fishermen have now reassessed their attitude, saying it has left a number of “very negative legacies” for the industry and its workers.
Richard Thomson, SNP MP for Gordon, added the fishing industry has “faced a betrayal” by Brexit.

And yet on the BBC's website today - a completely different opinion from a Scottish fisherman;

The Scottish Pelagic Fishermen's Association (SPFA) represents 22 boats which fish for mackerel and herring in the north-east Atlantic.
"If you asked me if our fishermen would prefer to be back in the EU, the answer would be a huge 'absolutely not'," said chairman Ian Gatt.

I can’t find original post, nor tempted to scroll back, but it was interesting in detail

Just disappointed that the normal standard of irrelevant links hadn't been met.

Understandable, standards are dropping like sewage in water ways.

I think as Alastair Campbell said yesterday "Labour are behind public opinion" don't know if you heard the R4 debate yesterday but all the pro brexit speakers were laughed at and the remainers clapped, i think 12months ago that wouldn't have happened (audience didn't know the debate topic before applying)

I've just listened to the recording - Jacob Rees-Mogg was laughed at a bit although I think the man who shouted "rubbish" about 6 minutes in was anti-Brexit activist Steve Bray. Bray had to be forcibly removed from the studio after about 20 minutes. I've found a clip here;

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/steve-bray-left-bruised-after-being-wrestled-out-of-bbc-debate-on-brexit-342760/

The article reports that Bray made a brief entrance halfway through - but he and his female companion (dressed in blue and yellow) were clearly seated so I think they must have been there from the start.

The presenter said most of the audience didn't know the debate topic before applying (Bray obviously did) - but the rest of the R4 audience was hardly representative - 'older, LibDem types' is how I would describe most of them.

The other 'remainer' on the panel said he couldn't see the UK being back in the EU by 2040 and didn't see the point in re-hashing old arguments. He wanted to move forward and promote Britain.

Clavinova · 06/02/2023 20:35

And negate the selective copy & paste?

Listening to a R4 recording at the same time. Can't think of everything.

DuncinToffee · 06/02/2023 20:43

What does Steve Bray have to do with the benefits of brexit?

Clavinova · 06/02/2023 21:00

The speed of covid vaccination roll out was one mentioned at the time?
The EU overtook us after about 6 weeks

Reported vaccine doses per 100 people:

4 March 2021 (12 weeks)
UK 32.3

European Union 8.1

www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-56286235

21 June 2021
UK 111.2
European Union 71.9

www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-52380823

we had little MRNA vaccines

Talking of MRNA vaccines;

Jan 2023
Cancer vaccine trials could start in the autumn – UK signs deal with BioNTech

It’s incredibly exciting that one of the larger mRNA companies, BioNTech, is going to partner with the UK to develop a research hub in Cambridge

@ListenToTheFacts

"The end of EU FoM which led to discriminatory priority for Europeans over Non-Europeans. It has been replaced with a meritocratic migration policy which treats all world migrants fairly on a basis of equality of opportunity for all, regardless of their nationality".

Beautiful sentiment (which isn't what many Brexiters were looking for, btw)...

However, I'm in coalface NHS. 5 years ago my team was 100% UK and EU trained. The Spanish and Portuguese were brilliant.

It's now 85% non British/EU. A few have actually been struck off. It feels dangerous and unsafe. The Nigerians are lovely and friendly. But readily admit surprise at how easy it was to get their non-scrutinised, bought 'degrees' past HCPC.

These people are scanning you. That's your meritocracy at work.

"The replacement of the EU's unethical and environmentally destructive CAP with a new system of subsidies for farmers who improve animal welfare and who protect the environment."

Steve Bray is definetely a benefit of Brexit. The guy is amazing.

That's because you are talking to the wrong kind of farmers.

The right kind are those that live in Chelsea and drive tractors.

So @Clavinova rather than posting about the many and varied benefits of Brexit you have linked to a recording of a radio show that may or may not have had a member of the public in the audience called Steve.

Why the need to distract from Brexit?

Fordian · 06/02/2023 21:30

@ListenToTheFacts

I could systematically debunk all your bullet points, but I can't be bothered.

The majority are 'Now, post EU, we could do this, we might do that' - but we all know it'll be politically expedient not to.

My question is: can you list any tangible benefit TO YOU from leaving the EU? Shark fin bans are very laudable, I'm sure, but have you SEEN my gas bill? For me, in no particular order; it's meant a nightmare for my ex-Erasmus student son; it's scuppered our retirement plans; it's made us an international laughing-stock; it's decimated my NHS team; it's caused us to be the western nation with the lowest economical growth with Sterling roubles to spend.

Where once we sat at the top tables.

I believe, sadly, that England, in particular, needs the slapping that's coming our way in order to grow up.

Luckily my DC have dual citizenship.

Fordian · 06/02/2023 21:33

@ListenToTheFacts

"End of EU CFP which restricted the UK Blue Belt Conservation Zone. The UK Government is introducing new Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) which maintain the strictest possible environmental protection, with a ban on all fishing, construction, etc. These can now be anywhere throughout the UK EEZ (thanks to Brexit)."

I couldn't leave this one unaddressed.

We're pumping RAW SEWAGE into our rivers and onto our beaches!

Your cognitive dissonance is astounding. And very 'Brexit'.

LexMitior · 06/02/2023 21:38

I don't think you can say shark fin bans are a serious benefit to the U.K. The trade may be disgusting but it is tiny, it is no longer government policy and the vastly more extensive and cruel trade of foie gras and fur (aside from cat and dog which is inherited EU policy) continues.

So really, the animal welfare benefits are minimal in terms of trade, and internally, even George Eustice has admitted that the new deals made will allow lower welfare products to enter the U.K.

i hope that as a healthcare professional you are protecting the safety of patients by reporting any drs who are employed due to misrepresenting their experience and qualifications. Are you and what has been the response?

Fordian · 07/02/2023 14:13

Nope. (HCPs, not Drs, incidentally). My managers are well aware of the dodgy nature of some of my colleagues' qualifications. But somehow the HCPC registered them. I guess because the govt knew what would happen to NHS staffing following the perfect storm of Brexit and removing the training bursary.

And I also don't want to be accused of racism. Which is what happens when you call out unsafe practice.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/02/2023 16:04

I hear you @Fordian, the phrase Not work ready is increasingly common usage in our hospitals.
