Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

@Whiskers4 They know cat owners will sacrifice their own favourite foods to keep buying their majesties in the luxury to which they are accustomed.

!!!

I got a 500g tub of the softer Lurpak reduced in Sainsburys for 1.99. Keeping it in fridge and not worried if past sell by date tbh. I really bought 2

cobblers123 · 02/02/2023 09:01

The little packs of three tins of small Heinz Baked Beans. I'm pretty sure that I used to pay 99p in Poundland for the three tins a while back. Now they're over £2.

I buy Aldi's normal baked beans now, large tin is about 39p I think. I actually prefer them to Heinz so I won't be buying their beans any time soon even if the price drops.

A roll of wrapping paper in paperchase at £9. I am not surprised they are in trouble!

Hahaha the world has gone mad

Jellywobblescobbles · 02/02/2023 09:04

Mac lipstick, the shiny ones. Went up to £20 after reformulation, now £22! Stop with the bloody price increases - its not long ago they were £17!

BaroldandNedmund · 02/02/2023 09:05

Twelve Babybels went up 55p to 3.55 in Sansbury’s….still 2.50 in Asda. Sorry that’s a boring one but we get through loads!

ToffeeNotCoffee · 02/02/2023 09:05

Standard tub of Philadelphia light cream cheese cost £1.25 last week. This week, £2.20. That's nearly double in the space of a week !

Dropping in another idea for those wanting cheaper options to the crazy pizza prices in shops.

We use regular basic wraps/tortillas for the base: two per person with a little olive oil in between, helps them stay together. Layer of passata, whatever toppings anyone wants, then mozzarella on top. I reckon we make four pizzas like that for the price of one in the supermarket.

I love the idea of making dough from scratch, but time just doesn't allow me to do that, and this is the next best option I've found.

Birds Eye frozen peas 3.75 for 1.2kg but in Marks 1.20 for 1kg. Have found M&S better for some things especially staples.

The cot that Tommy Fury and Mollie Mae bought their baby £8000+

God knows what that whole nursery cost… cost of living crisis doesn’t affect them.

Box of 12 Felix cat food pouches £5. Doesn't seem that long ago you could regularly buy two for £7.50. My two monkeys (putting it politely) came to us as rescues on it and I can't find anything else they'll stick with.

I’ve found the same thing with dog food - huge price increases lately. Try the Pets at Home website. They sell large boxes of Felix - 96 pouches for £30. My maths isn’t up to much but I think it works out at something like £3.75 for 12, which is a standard box. If you spend £45, delivery is free. I get our dog’s food on their repeat order facility which works out cheaper again. Here’s the link:

This is really interesting, and backs up what I hear from those working in the food trade. Aldi and Lidl have the fastest rising prices by far at the moment. Waitrose and M&S have increased prices too of course, but by much lesser percentages in general.

I think the important thing at the moment is to shop around as much as possible - the obvious problem is the time it takes. But will be the best way to save money. I'm off to M&S for peas now!

@goingtotown

I used to point out to the assistants any items which were cheaper new and not only in BHF charity shops although they seem to be the worst. I was always met with blank stares or mumbles of "oh not my job to do the pricing" so I don't bother now.

Many charity shops are now only stocking "vintage" which appeals to the students mainly and is such a rip off when you see the price tickets.

See I have a real problem with the pricing in charity shops.
I have given some really lovely stuff to charity shops hoping that people who are struggling are able to buy good quality clothing at cheap prices.
The thought that these prices are prohibitive
to many is irksome.

You do know that batter is only flour salt egg and milk? What do you add to the batter mix? Is it egg and milk?

Yep, and if you use self raising flour and add a tablespoon of sugar or honey and a bit of mixed spice, you can make your own scotch pancakes. Way cheaper. Leave them to cool and pop in the toaster. Delist.

Toilet roll £ 9.50 in Tesco(seriously Tesco!!) the weirdest thing they are £3.50 in the Newsagents of all the places ........💩

AtomicRitual · 02/02/2023 09:14

I've also just reminded myself of the shock I got at the price of artificial Christmas trees last year.

Ours is OK, but at 15 years old it's seen better days. DH suggested maybe getting another one so we had a look around the garden centre. I appreciate they're often more expensive, but I was shooketh!

£250!!!!

Then went to Homebase who'd already started their 50% off sale pre-Christmas and they were still over £100 and they looked shit!

Got home and looked at the £35 price label still on my 15 year old Tesco tree box and decided we'd stick with that!

Seems they’re cashing in on the increased footfall due to cost of living. So what’s genuinely due to increased production costs and what’s just greed ?

Crestaq · 02/02/2023 09:20

Definitely Jamie Oliver pizza recipe- the one in Jamie's Italian.
We get about 8 pizzas out of 1kg of flour.
And we always munch away congratulating ourselves on how much money we've saved!

Heinz baked beans. It wasnt too long ago that they were half the price.

(yes, i know own brand are cheaper, but even they've shot up)

All heinz tins are mental prices now ! Tesco sell the spaghetti bolognese and mac for over 2 quid each now. Used to get 3 tins for £2. Handy for when the youngest is being fussy and doesn't want a proper dinner but I won't buy them now at that price

This bag on Farfetch - £11,665!!! Though very useful I'm sure if you have 3 small dogs...
