Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

A tiny box of tiny candles - smaller than a packof playing cards for... £47!!! Not £4.70. Forty seven pounds. Baffling.

Feels more like 'vote Tory, go broke' to me.

Obviously doesn't realise food prices are rising rapidly everywhere.

OP maybe give it a few weeks and try a Home Bargains. They always have chocolate quite cheaply.

beguilingeyes · 02/02/2023 09:30

A packet of Strepsils. £5!!!

emmathedilemma · 02/02/2023 09:31

This house is amusing me.....you can tell from the photos how long it's been on the market for whereas normally family sized houses in this area are under offer before they even hit the internet. It's on the corner of 2 busy roads by a roundabout, has no vehicle access, no nearby parking because of the busy roads, and has about a meter of land separating it from a primary school playground!! It's a Scottish "offers over" which would typically mean they'd expect 10-20% over that price. It's over priced compared to semi-detached houses in neighbouring streets with off road parking and gardens, I just can't see who'd buy it.

Granted a treat, but Dominos pizza. Always been expensive but now extortionate.
And yes there are offers but both my husband and I have maths degrees but convinced we never select the best deal😆

Kd96 · 02/02/2023 09:33

Tesco 🙄

TommyShelby · 02/02/2023 09:33

Detergent for the washing machine! Really winds me up having to pay a fiver for stuff to wash my clothes when I’m convinced it was £1.50 cheaper about a month ago…

I remember an incident during the pandemic, during TissueGate as it was known locally. Couldn’t buy toilet/kitchen roll or tissues - supermarket shelves stripped. One corner shop owner started splitting up large packs - presumably bought wholesale - and selling individual rolls at £1.50 each !! Someone put a brick through the shop window. Curiously, he stopped selling toilet paper after that !!

for the marmite lovers. have any of you got any friends with cosco cards. the price is still hiked but you can get those big tubs for much cheaper and it will last.

Yes! I stock up on these when I go - I think they are currently £5.95 in Costco - 600 grams

whatwasIgoingtosay · 02/02/2023 09:36

And the oil company Shell has doubled its profits to an obscene amount over the past year! Because this government refuses to tax proportionately. So while we all suffer price rises Shell execs and shareholders get fat on the fruits of war, etc.

I don't know about the situation at home in the UK, but here in Thailand it's terrible. A small bottle of beer is £5. A night in a fairly basic hotel is £150 and a crap meal of one course for a family of 5 is routinely £100. Cheap days have long gone, wherever you are.

This has totally shocked me! I know it was 25 years ago, but I travelled for months in Thailand on £10 a day- this included somewhere to sleep, food (3 times a day) and some beers. Like seriously. Travel around the country was also cheap as chips. I'm actually reeling at this.

Aldi 'marmite' tastes just as good, trust me, massive marmite fan!!😊

I prefer Aldi's, and have been know to drive to the Aldi in the next county to stock up when ours was out of stock Grin

Twinlife2 · 02/02/2023 09:42

Babybels - over 2 quid in Aldi!

Cadburysucks · 02/02/2023 09:43

I now carry my own tea/coffee in a smash travel cup, leak proof and reliable. Got used to it during lockdown, must have saved a fortune.

thetemptationofchocolate · 02/02/2023 09:45

I bought a bag of guinea pig food, it was over £8, gone up from about £5. But what really bugged me was the bag size was the same but they have reduced the contents from 2kg to 1.5kg.
I think there a few places who have done this, put up prices at the same time as reducing pack size. Maybe they think we won't notice?

Wow, sounds as though your husband is a great pizza chef. Having a chat with a family member yesterday - they starting making their own bread during the pandemic when people were panic buying it. They use a mixer with a dough hook and have always used the fast action dried yeast. They recently discovered BonneBouffe fresh yeast, sold on Amazon in boxes of 12 individually wrapped portions. Delivered overnight in chilled packaging and lasts about a month in the fridge. They say the bread is fab, although I’m still waiting for my sample !! They were also saying that they tried dough improver powder, also from Amazon - just a couple of teaspoons added to the dry ingredients and apparently makes the dough lighter.

Wow that bread sounds great! Might get him on the case! Yes, he’s become pretty proficient. We used to eat out regularly/pay £22 for 2 pizzas from takeaway and now our own costs a fraction and is just as good.

DD likes mint Options hot chocolate. £4.95 a tub! I suggested she put some mint essence in plain hot choc! She elected to go without.

SlightlyJaded · 02/02/2023 09:52

WH Smith deserves to go under. Greeting card - smallest and most basic £3.75. A4 Notebook (horrible cheap paper) £7.95

Just fuck off.

Cereals is OUTRAGEOUS

Lamb has always been expensive I know, but 4 lamb chops (not even organic) in Sainsburys were £16 the other day. Mental.

And agree that the cheap supermarkets seem to be hiking at a faster rate than Waitrose and M&S.

Saw this on BBC breakfast this morning - £32bn up from £15bn in 2021 it’s obscene. Exxon are even worse - £44bn profit. What I don’t understand is if their costs are so much more, how are they able to make so much profit ? their The wholesale price of gas has tumbled but the usual excuse is that this ‘hasn’t filtered through’ to the customer. Funny how the price rises don’t take long to filter through though isn’t it ? Sunak’s going to have to make a tough decision on windfall taxes soon - wonder what his excuse will be this time !!

The report came after they broke a story on British Gas employing a debt collection company using strong arm tactics for people falling behind with energy bills. Breaking into the homes of vulnerable customers to fit pre payment meters. An undercover Times newspaper reporter got a job with the company and there’s footage of them forcibly fitting meters in the homes of mothers with young children - one of whom has asthma, so disability means nothing to them either. In one case they forced a pre payment meter on a 77 year old man. One of the bailiffs can be heard saying ‘this is my favourite part of the job’ as they got ready to break in. Another said he was ‘old school’ when it came to considering who was vulnerable and didn’t consider mothers with children to fit the bill, despite the fact that it’s the law !!

My fixed rate with BG ends next month and I’m seriously considering changing supplier. This situation can’t carry on or there’s going to be real unrest in this country in the not too distant future. Very scary.

Was that in Tesco? It's £2 in Sainsburys at the moment. £2.25 in Asda.

£3.40 for a small Heinz Salad Cream!
