Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

Packet of M&Ms in a normal supermarket for £2.70!

Whatthetrolley · 07/02/2023 22:15

Last Tuesday I bought an Aunt Bessys frozen Toad in the Hole from Asda for £1 (not on offer) today it was £1.40.

I saw a pair of top shop black jeans size 6 short said never worn in chsrity shop. My size and i do heed a new pair price 18.00 had they been say £10.00,id have bought them but 18.00 i can go in M&S and get then cheaper with my Sparks offer, other shop had tacky looking jewellery way over priced and a cheap looking vase 9,00.same shop a year or so sgo i bought a lovely white Portuguese flower jug worth about 40.00 for £2.00 far nicer than one in shop window..

Only thing still cheap in charity shops seem to be books.

£3.00 for a box of vegetable suet in Waitrose yesterday. Last time I bought some (admittedly a good while ago, it was around £1.20)

postwarbulge · 08/02/2023 08:18

I agree with previous posters about some charity shops. Some expect you to pay top dollar for clothing that is only fit to be torn up for dusters!

I live in London and a portion of chips at my local is £2.30 and the portions are enormous. A regular portion is easily enough for two.

Yes, the same here re: the portions, but it is the quality I am talking about not the quantity? I think they may be using cheaper oil and frying for less time or something.

EcoCustard · 08/02/2023 09:56

£3 in the Co-op for Mcvities chocolate digestives. I don’t have them often, will be never now.

beguilingeyes · 08/02/2023 10:27

The Lidl chocolate digestive are very nice and much cheaper.

ancientgran · 08/02/2023 11:08

That's great. I bought a packet this morning and I was hoping they would be OK. Might try one with my elevenses.

Being a tea drinker and my only (instant) coffee is the morning one which wakes up my head I was running low on Nescafe so after seeing the price rise had reached £7 ! I thought no way. A jar of Tesco Classic has now been mixed with my remaining Nescafe and it tastes fine to me.

We buy aldi coffee the Columbian which is £2.09 I think for 100g and its lovely

Grigorisangel · 08/02/2023 11:54

some type of knock of brand pot noodle in asda today for £1.70 with 50p into asda rewards. Only the small sized one too… who would pay that. I checked the pot noodles for comparison and the were on rollback from £1 to 70p which I still think is too much.
in Iceland, 2 pack of mcvities hobnobs £4
my mum is one of the people who picks up branded items without thinking, when shopping with her last week she went to pick up mcvities choc digestives for £2.75 and I told her to try the asda ones for 65p as they are preferred in our house as have more chocolate on top, she agreed after trying they were much better. Went to pick up pack stuffing and I told her to buy Asda’s at a third of the cost. I imagine a lot of people do the same and stick with branded as it’s familiar. We now always try supermarket own and only go back to branded when we notice a significant difference

GimmeBiscuits · 08/02/2023 12:32

I only have Waitrose or Coop if I want to go to a nearby supermarket, and generally, Waitrose is cheaper. Aldi is a fair drive so need to offset petrol with savings.

I'm going to have to go back to doing what I did in lockdown and order online with some sort of rotation so that I get the best prices for my budget.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2023 12:54

@Welshdraig I have to say I have really laughed (in a kind way I hope) at your post as I honestly didn't expect to see the price of pencil cases being mentioned on a CoL thread, so thank you for that. It's cheered me right up!

Walkley18 · 08/02/2023 15:37

As people are now mentioning cheaper swaps, can anyone recommend an alternative to Nescafe Gold Blend decaf? I notice someone mentioned Colombia coffee upthread but I don't like it too strong, so any thoughts? Just popped into Waitrose (left with only one thing at £2 but got a free latte while there anyway!) and Goldblend there now £8! Hope if this thread reaches capacity someone can start a sequel! So interesting!

postwarbulge · 08/02/2023 15:41

@Walkley18.

Lidls had Nescafe Gold Blend 200g for £6 today

Walkley18 · 08/02/2023 15:46

Thanks @postwarbulge but still much dearer than I'm used to paying (a fiver was my limit and I'd buy when on offer, I'm now on my last one!), so would like to try a cheaper brand if anyone can recommend.

postwarbulge · 08/02/2023 15:59

If it is any help for the more mature members, Iceland has a 10% off day for pensioners, in return for a flash of your Freedom Pass. Fortunately, live within cycling distance of three Iceland shops, each of which has a different Granny Day.

Don't know if others have noticed this but i see prices rocketing on essentials.. branded and non branded but on things that are optional, they are not increasing at anything like the same amount but surely cost increases are the same for anything that is made?

Makes me think there is a great deal of opportunism in pricing.

Will be very interesting to see what the supermarkets profits are 22/23 ?

Yes yes to this.

They can fuck right off with their mere 51% increase.

Gluten free gravy granules were 79p in December, Bisto were a bit dearer than standard at £2.35. Tesco's are now selling half the quantity (175g) compared to the standard ones (350g) at exactly the same price - £4.50. The equivalent quantity of GF to standard would therefore cost £9 a tub, particularly as there isn't an own brand equivalent available.

Price gouging specific products meant to take into account actual disabilities is fucking despicable.

justasking111 · 08/02/2023 17:58

Heinz, now Bisto, we really need a thread to name and shame this collusion between supermarket and manufacturers. I'll bet Unilever are neck deep in the scam too.
