Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

Just before Christma I bought a six pack of mini cheddars for £1 today the same bag cost £1.75

Helendegenerate · 06/02/2023 13:03

@postwarbulge Yes thanks I will have to get myself along there and see if it's in stock at that price.

postwarbulge · 06/02/2023 13:06

Exactly so, @ancientgran. In times of high inflation, prices can go up more than necessary as retailers think that these will not be noticed by consumers. Who would notice another bucket of sand in a desert?

Long gone are the days of a piece of battered cod and tanners worth of chips. At my local chip shop, a small portion of chips is now £4:20. They are utter crap too, being undercooked and soggy, looking like a know of anaemic earthworms.

postwarbulge · 06/02/2023 13:17

I thought of dragging my old bread maker out of the cupboard. However, given the high cost of electricity, would I be saving anything?

Decafflatteplease · 06/02/2023 13:50

Cafe with strawberries and cream on the menu. A ramekin sized dish....£6! I know it's out of season but £6!

justasking111 · 06/02/2023 14:26

They're profit figures will be revealing. Tbh you need to take into account their overheads, but we may see an eye wateringly high one this year

Whydidimarryhim · 06/02/2023 15:39

Last time i bought 240 PG tips was £3.79 - £4.89 today!!!!
No way is this all inflation - it’s greed and opportunism from the supermarket. Yes am sure it will be record profits at the supermarkets this year.

Last time I bought chips they were the same I wondered if they have cut down on frying time due to the cost?

SilentHedges · 06/02/2023 22:30

Homebase. I only go in there because its convenient, but I was "peaked" by their prices this weekend and will never go in there again. £4.50 for 500ml of white spirit. I could buy 2 litres elsewhere for the same price.

wellpaddedintherear · 06/02/2023 22:38

I wandered into a charity shop near me the other week
id been in before and it was reasonably priced
this time-£14 for a pair of jeans
£5 for a primark scarf
£6 for a basic,no label top
£7 for a pair of gloves
£30 for a joe browns top
I almost fell over!
I know they have to make money but it’s cheaper to buy new!

Cinema tickets. We wanted to take our son to see Avatar when it was first released. He loves 3D films. (He’s 21 so an adult, but he has special needs). It was £48 for three adults. We couldn’t afford to go.

If your son had special needs I wonder if he would be entitled to a CEA Cinema Card? I have a friend with a disability and with her CEA Card she gets a free ticket for anyone accompanying her to the cinema. All of the big cinema chains accept it and some of the smaller ones too. I think she had to pay a small fee to get the card (a fiver or thereabouts?) and she just has to renew it yearly. Might be worth looking into

kateandme · 07/02/2023 05:36

rich teas 1.50 wtaf!!

mickandrorty · 07/02/2023 06:30

Tesco English breakfast muffins were 50p now £1 the cheap grapes used to be 99p now £1.49 and bisto used to be around £4 for the big tub now £5.50! It is a good job i do my shopping online so people cant hear me saying 'fuckin hell' constantly as i do my shop 😂

Them kinder eggs are on clubcard offers £2.25

GPTec1 · 07/02/2023 07:13

Don't know if others have noticed this but i see prices rocketing on essentials.. branded and non branded but on things that are optional, they are not increasing at anything like the same amount but surely cost increases are the same for anything that is made?

Makes me think there is a great deal of opportunism in pricing.

Will be very interesting to see what the supermarkets profits are 22/23 ?

I think the fact that prices are rising faster in supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl says a lot. Smacks of profiteering.

I'm not in the UK but I've noticed that supermarket prices have risen far more than our local market - where my favourite wine is still €2.50! I'm hoping it will stay that way.

Decafflatteplease · 07/02/2023 11:10

14% increase on one of my medications this morning (vitamin d). Up from £1 to £1.14. still good value but that's not the point.

Ironically i could get it free on prescription as I get free prescription but that would cost the NHS so I haven't asked for it free.

I have noticed the enormous price increases in charity shops too. Totally ridiculous, people won't be able to afford them and the shops will go down the toilet. I spoke to a charity shop manager about it, and she said that people weren't donating as much (selling it online), and what they did get donated now was poorer quality. I said that's no justification for the price hikes. She replied that they were paying extra for rates/fuel etc. etc. It's the same story everywhere now. I think we will see the end of charity shops. People just won't give stuff away anymore because they can' afford new clothes. This country is on its knees. And there's ANOTHER fuel hike coming up in April.

Cadbury creme egg. ASDA £1. Co-op 75p

I live in London and a portion of chips at my local is £2.30 and the portions are enormous. A regular portion is easily enough for two.

Notweirdatall · 07/02/2023 16:52

Asda ground coffee - previously £1.10-ish - now £3+ 😮

Gingerkittykat · 07/02/2023 17:06

£3 for a small jar of Loyd Grossman pasta sauce in Asda. I always used to get it on offer for £1 a jar, a few months ago it was on offer for £1.50 and now this sudden jump.

£3 for a pack of 8 Mr Kipling fondant fancies, also in Asda.

justasking111 · 07/02/2023 17:40

OH fancied fish and chips. So one fish, one large chips, one gravy and one mushy peas I set off to get him. £14. told him I wasn't treating him again 🙄

nopuppiesallowed · 07/02/2023 18:11

Watch out for prices in Iceland. I threw a small tub of Philadelphia cheese into my basket without checking the price. It was £3.25! I don't usually shop in Iceland but thought it was supposed to be cheap....

There was an advert for that yesterday on tv and it was basically saying how you could feed a family of 4 for a few quid including pasta! The advertised price was £1 or thereabouts! I thought I’d this thread immediately and thought well that’s a lie!

I’m not sure if it was on this thread but someone commented and said that they’re a business etc but it appears charity shops have forgot why they used to be so successful. They got items to sell on for free and sold them on at a fair and affordable price to the public. Instead they’ve become greedy, they get huge discounts on rates and rents, all the staff are volunteers bar the manager and try to fob off their huge prices on lies. It serves them right if they do disappear off the high street as they’ve frozen out their target demographic.
