Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

I picked up a packet of dog treats in Tesco's yesterday - £8 😳 I exclaimed "what the fuck?!" out loud and felt a bit guilty about the elderly lady walking by but she was just as outraged.

We can blame them for Brexit which has exacerbated the problem! I'm in Italy and supermarket prices have risen but prices at our local market are a lot more stable albeit with a slight rise on some items. I do shop around a lot more now.

Whereas I read the prices in Spain have gone up significantly for example. It isn't a UK only problem. Not defending the Tories but you would think only the UK has issues.

Walkley18 · 04/02/2023 07:03

Agree with PP, I used to enjoy going to the supermarket. I work from home so was almost a treat to get out and see people. Now, even when I need to go, I can't bring myself to go. I'm just popping to local shop for odd irems when I need them, which isn't brilliant and probably dearer per item but at least I'm not faced with £100+ time bill that I would get at supermarket... and not buying random purchases. I know I need to go, I need proper selection of veg etc...but I can't seem to do it.

Buttalapasta · 04/02/2023 07:03

@HistoryFanatic I agree. All countries have issues but the UK also has Brexit to cope with! It's not contested that Brexit has exacerbated the problem.

Yep, when I was a student a friend worked in a chicken factory in the holidays. He said that they’d be packing chicken for a cheap range and then it’d be “stop” and the packaging would be changed for a high end range. All the same chicken.

I thought they processed cheap/value chicken in a different way eg injecting it with water so it artificially plumps it up. Would be interested to know which is right.

I thought I would try the TGI Fridays range at Iceland (we love the restaurant) but found it was absolutely disgusting and bore no resemblance whatsoever to actual TGI Fridays.

RedRobin100 · 04/02/2023 07:13

God it’s so depressing.

Feels more like 'vote Tory, go broke' to me.

They don't vote Tory. I should know. But they were indeed bullied by Owen Jones. Niche thinking does not guarantee a market. They used to do very well with their range of pretty things for impulse buys. Unfortunately the range got smaller and the prices bigger. Like others I stopped dropping by to be tempted. Shame. Such lovely shopping.

HistoryFanatic · 04/02/2023 06:43

Rising food prices are affecting most of the world at the moment. I don't think we can nessarily blame the Tories for that.

The £ dropped about 20% against the $ after the Brexit vote and hasn't recovered. Oil and gas are priced in $.

So our fuel, energy and fertiliser prices are all 20% more than they would be if it wasn't for the Tories and that feeds through to food prices.

glammymommy · 04/02/2023 07:25

Do people not pay attention in school? This is why I've spent nearly 30 years telling pupils to pay attention, read, think and so on. Otherwise they'll sound foolish, doing something like equating fascism with the left.

Kittenmum89 · 04/02/2023 07:27

Nivea coco butter in Asda !!!! It’s only £2.90 elsewhere !!!!

No need to patronise me. I am well aware thank you. It is worse here but my point was that other countries are having similar issues. 33% inflation in some of the Eastern European counties at the moment.

thebutcherswife · 04/02/2023 07:50

The price of lamb has a number of factors; fuel, labour, access to a 24hr vet and there’s not a lot of meat to bone ratio on a lamb. Typically a lamb can weigh 15-20kg where a side of beef can be 130-170kg.

thebutcherswife · 04/02/2023 07:55

I do wonder if the prices seen in Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury are down to the price lock they’ve done to match ALDIs prices. I’m sure I read that ALDIs profit margins were quite low 2-3% but Tescos etc were a lot higher. They have to make that money back somewhere, so they just stick it on other stuff and et voila! Profits remain high but they look like they’re helping in the cost of living crisis.

Also I’ve noticed that when Asda does it’s star products rewards the price is a lot higher than before.

boobearandme · 04/02/2023 08:01

@Kittenmum89 what on earth?? I bought my daughter this only last week from Asda for £3. We are in the East Midlands. How can prices vary so much in the same supermarket?

Mine is co op flavoured water. It’s been 53p a bottle for ages. Overnight they are now 78p! They are the same bottles sitting on the shelf! Tap water with a splash of cordial from now on!

PeachesPudding · 04/02/2023 08:26

Medium hot drink and smallish cake at Costa. £7.50!!! That’s my love affair with Costa over.

I used to buy only organic chicken and eggs. Now I buy the “free to roam” stuff instead and try not to think about the quality.

This is true. I buy a lot of Tesco own brand, some are the value, and their Aldi price match meant they actually bumped it up. Raging.

evtheria · 04/02/2023 08:47

@thebutcherswife Sorry, I misunderstood. What I mean is: a lot of the Tesco own stuff was actually cheaper than Aldi! But they get to boast they match them (by increasing theirs). That was one sneaky way of doing it. Couldn't have a 'cheaper than Aldi' sticker, nooooo.

Fanakerpan · 04/02/2023 08:59

Just wondering about 'left-wing fascists, isn't that a contradiction in terms?

It's £3.00 at Asda. That label's for another product. Asda are worse than ever for this.

FatOaf · 04/02/2023 09:14

The most expensive macaroni in co.op is £4.45 or two for £7.00 and it’s not tiny 🫤

Co-Ops sell produce from local specialist suppliers. It wouldn't be unusual where I live for a Co-Op to have macaroni cheese for £7.50. I bought some bacon, sausages and black pudding in a local Co-Op last Sunday: all much more expensive than the regular stuff but from a local pig-rearer with high standards if welfare and sustainability. Another Co-Op near where I live has lots of ready meals from independent producers that are very nice but also expensive.

Globe22 · 04/02/2023 09:14

£4 in Sainsburys in outer London! I didn’t buy it! I wander around and look in shock at some of the prices. I do without rather than pay crazy prices.

There's something I buy regularly that's over £2 cheaper in the local Tesco Express than in the big Tesco, because it's price-matched with Aldi in the big Tesco. I call in at the Express on my way home from the big Tesco to get it. Ridiculous.

Doris86 · 04/02/2023 06:42

Totally agree. Who on earth pays those prices? I only use WH Smith for a quick browse of the magazines. If I want to actually buy something I’ll got elsewhere.

Regarding this, I seen a diary online I wanted from there but needed it quickly, so thought I’ll go in store. Online it was priced at something like £3 in the sale - as we were already in January - In store it was full price! I bought it without realising, as I picked up a few other bits as well. But I checked the receipt and went back into the shop and asked why it was a different price? The girl in there, who was so helpful, said online prices are completely different! I was so shocked! I thought how can they get away with that?! They’re forcing people to shop online, those stores will close and those staff will be out of a job! It’s a disgrace!

busymomtoone · 04/02/2023 10:04

Saw a truffle infused jar of marmite in Sainburys and thought I would treat myself … until I saw the price tag - £7!! Same shop - thought the organic apples were priced at £1.75 - got home to discover if been stung £3.75 - for SIX apples!! Most of my shop is at local farmers/ fruit and veg market which fortunately remains relatively good value so this was an aberration- won’t be repeated in a hurry!

Norfolkungood · 04/02/2023 10:12

I was so shocked I had to take a picture. I feel sorry for the people who aren't able to go to various shops to get what they need. This is a local store but a chain store not a small corner shop.
