Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

Read recently we export over 60% of our lamb. That might be why. Can't fathom how New Zealand lamb is cheaper than our Welsh lamb though. Morrisons is the cheapest place for lamb or was

Zeroneedtoputupwithpain · 03/02/2023 23:43

I just got quoted $23k to replace a VERY small bathroom (less than $5000 of that was for materials). I’m pretty sure I pay my neurosurgeon less than that 😂

ANYTHING in Poundland.

the only items actually costing £1 are the items cheaper than £1 everywhere else!

This is so true. It is still handy for bits and bobs like phone charger cables but if you have a home bargains nearby almost everything will be cheaper and better quality in there.

This, a chicken for £22 in Sainsbury’s. I don’t care if it’s organic, it can GTF

Wow. Vegetable fajitas it is!

Maybe. But prices do vary wildly across the country.

There's actually a national pricing policy that they have adhere to - though they are allowed to charge higher prices at Metro type smaller stores, as they have higher overheads. So maybe it was at a Metro.

I seem to remember from the various Brexit analysis arguments that we produce more lamb than the domestic market can consume but we produce less beef.

Beef is more reliant on cereal and fertiliser prices than lamb is.

Why the high lamb price then?

This ! And more to the point where is lamb. Supermarkets here in NI have very little lamb for sale. And lamb mince has disappeared since Xmas...where is it ?

I used to kind of enjoy shopping, not now! I have seen a lot of the shocking prices posted with my own eyes. Thinking to myself well I am def not buying that, thinking I am being careful and getting to the check out - then hearing the total and my face always betrays me as I see the cashier look at me but I reckon they are seeing that shocked face look a lot more
It is scary

Stewball01 · 04/02/2023 00:44

I'm afraid I don't do the shopping any more. My ex does it so I don't know prices. I know that's not an excuse but........

@MaggieMagpie357
£22,000 for room in Liverpool during eurovision? How can they ask for that price and get it???

Stickytoastandhoney · 04/02/2023 00:44

DoubleShotEspresso · 01/02/2023 23:12

£7.50 for a tiny ready meal of.... wait for it.....
Macaroni cheese!

In co-op I was so shocked I took a picture - it's not something I'd buy tbh but knew this was insane

The most expensive macaroni in co.op is £4.45 or two for £7.00 and it’s not tiny 🫤

MaggieMagpie357 · 04/02/2023 00:47

@Stewball01 honestly I have no idea, I'm as baffled as you!

DrSimeon · 04/02/2023 01:00

I usually get most of my shoppinng from Ocado (limited mobility) but due to low funds ventured into Asda this week. As previously mentioned, Bisto Best was mega cheap in Asda but everything else was shockingly expensive. In fact, much pricier than Ocado for many of the things I frequently buy.
You can get a 99p delivery with Ocado on a Wednesday; if you leave it until the last minute you can often get free delivery at weekends; and periodically they offer a two-month 'Smart Pass' trial when all deliveries are free.
As a result I'm going to avoid the supermarkets. Only wish I had an Aldi near by as friends say they are great.

It seems at the minute that you can only get the best deals if you go around absolutely every supermarket and prices change every day!

Aldi are v good, I've swapped almost totally to them except for Sainsburys gherkins which I just can't give up. I go and buy 10 jars every so often GrinBlush

Ukrainebaby23 · 04/02/2023 01:57

Titan window vac, £29.99 new in Screwfix, saw one on ebay (I'm hunting for a charger lead, lost mine), £499 that's what you call a markup.

Ukrainebaby23 · 04/02/2023 02:01

Same here for Branston pickle, I do a regular supermarket shop for Branston and Cushelle and bulk buy every 2 months, whichever has them cheaper/available.

Can of Morrisons Irish Stew £3 yesterday!
£3 for a can of long life food.
That's dearer than a "fresh" ready meal.

That's doubled in the past year and jumped recently like everything else

exactly people used to depend on these meals. like it was seen as the "poorer" people choice. but i couldnt beleive the price of tinned meals now!

i used to enjoy it. i have to admit. it was a good little stroll and i am one of "those" who didnt mind a good peruse of the isles. loved a good food shop. now i hate it.hate it hate it

Lisapeter · 04/02/2023 02:33

My hubby was saying its profiteering. Just greedy these companies. Costco selling pack of 24 for £13 and tomato soup the same. We are stocked up now lol.

Buzzydent · 04/02/2023 03:39

Winalot sachets gone from £9.40 to £14.60 in a fortnight in Asda and obviously doggo will only eat winalot

Harmonypus · 04/02/2023 05:59

Monday 30 Jan, a box of 24 Oxos in Asda were £2.50, but by Thursday 2 February they'd shot up to £4.00 - that's a 60% increase in 3 days!

tulips27 · 04/02/2023 06:40

@DrSimeon re: Ocado, I can quite believe this as my basket on Trolley often shows a substantial amount of things being cheapest at Ocado. I think prices have just gone up in the ordinary supermarkets that Ocado or Waitrose may work for some people where they didn't before. Unfortunately, since the pandemic they don't deliver to my area although I don't know the reason. I was gutted when they had an amazing offer on my favourite "special treat" conditioner last summer. I was all set up to order about ten bottles only to find out I couldn't have them 😩

Any item on any shelf at WH Smith.

How has that shop not gone bust?

Totally agree. Who on earth pays those prices? I only use WH Smith for a quick browse of the magazines. If I want to actually buy something I’ll got elsewhere.

tulips27 · 04/02/2023 06:42

"Crazy Jack" soft apricots shot up from a standard price of £2.40 to £4.00 in Sainsbury's a couple of weeks ago.

It's brexit and Tories yes. We are in a right hole in this country. I'm really very fearful of the future. If food prices continue to rocket like this people are going to starve.

Rising food prices are affecting most of the world at the moment. I don't think we can nessarily blame the Tories for that.

tulips27 · 04/02/2023 06:46

@DrSimeon Only wish I had an Aldi near by as friends say they are great.

Do you have a Lidl? They also have some great prices, it differs v.s Aldi as to what are the best things to buy, though.

We can blame them for Brexit which has exacerbated the problem! I'm in Italy and supermarket prices have risen but prices at our local market are a lot more stable albeit with a slight rise on some items. I do shop around a lot more now.
