Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

Had a bit of a chuckle about Paperchase earlier in the week - few years ago they allowed themselves to be bullied by left wing fascists like Owen Jones into withdrawing advertising from the DM (and I have no real regard for that particular rag)

As the saying goes "go woke, go broke"

Have you heard yourself?

I think Asda has become horrendously expensive for food of fairly low quality.

My trips to the farmers' market have ended (I cannot believe the cost at which I bought into all that for years!)
No more chai lattes, flat whites and pre-gym (I know!) flaky croissants in hipster hangouts.
No more fashionable treats, unusual teas, kombucha.
Shopping for groceries seems functional and boring compared to before but I am definitely a more confident cook (mainly due to lockdown).

I think all the hipsters vanished along with the pandemic.

Own brand cat food pouches. A year ago were £2.20. They've gradually increased in price at all supermarkets and are now between £3.60 and £3.90.

I have a monthly delivery of Blink! costing £29, a monthly delivery of Katkin costing £66, a tin of tuna each Tuesday and a twice monthly pack of Aldi Vitacat for about a fiver which they have on Fast Food Friday.

Buttalapasta · 02/02/2023 21:38

I'm in the EU so beans are imported so I expected a bit of a mark up but £2.75?? I didn't buy them. They used to be 1 euro at our local convenience store but they've stopped importing from the UK since Brexit as it's too much hassle.

2 euros a litre then? That's more expensive than it is here.

I pay about €1.10 in Italy for a litre. That's for the cheapest brand but all milk tastes the same to me!

gosh we need another baked bean price war like in 1996
They we’re 3p a tin

justasking111 · 02/02/2023 22:43

Thanks for comparing shopping. They're trying to tell us foods have gone up 10%. What a crock I thought every time it was trotted out. Your online shopping history proves how big the lie is

Bullshot · 02/02/2023 09:36

deff the reality. many news stations are agreeing with this two.
the trouble is like and they got in trouble for this they try and fool you by going on what a whole selction of goods have gone up by. they even used chanpagne and high end goods for one list which obviously doesnt give a true pricing hike.

everyone i talk to its more 30% and over.

In October last year a pint of Guinness in Dublin was the equivalent of £7.50 and at the airport it was £11. Bonkers.

Fuck me! I worked in Dublin for a summer in 1992. Amazing memories. Wasn't cheap then, but NOTHING like that. Jesus.

Puffalicious · 03/02/2023 00:59

I'm not an Asda shopper (Aldi for me as it's 2 minutes from home) but was in today to buy bits for DS's birthday (branded crisps/ sweets he likes, X-Box cake) so had a bit of a shop. Everything I looked at was sooooo expensive. I had to stop looking at prices! Worst was £2.75 for French Fancies (DS loves them). At that price they'll be a monthly treat if he's lucky!

The only things of good value were non-food - cards (3 for £3 which are really nice), napkins, party bits, and joggers (2 pairs for £12 that are nice and thick).

i too end up just not being able to keep looking at prices.

oh i agree. 40% is the least for me. i think mine has even doubled in general. i cant bare it. its not sustainable either and its really starting to get to me

Grigorisangel · 03/02/2023 05:41

The main two for me are me Kipling buns, ds likes either French fancies or angel slices for his pack up but they have been between £2.75-£3.50 for the past few weeks so he has had to make do with the asda branded alternative. Second was sharwoods curry sauce, used to be £1.25 but normally 2 for £2. Currently £2.75 for one so I haven’t bought any

MerylSqueak · 03/02/2023 06:46

I think that the difference between this week's and last week's shop has been the most shocking ng for me. Many items have leapt in price. I can't help but think it is profiteering. Take
butter for example. Own brand salted butter has gone up by 25 p on last week in Lidl and Tesco. In Lidl other brands weren't available. Unsalted butter is still £1.99 / £2.00. Salt can't make 25p difference and you also have to wonder why all the other brands had disappeared.

Same stick of butter cost 85p in 2019.

cunderthunt1 · 03/02/2023 06:50

£34.95 for a green vibrator

BethDuttonsTwin · 03/02/2023 06:51

A bottle of light olive oil for £11! Also charity shop clothes in general. I don’t want to pay £15 for a previous worn, musty smelling top just because it’s a halfway decent brand thanks.

User17649787 · 03/02/2023 06:53

Heinz big soup which DH takes out in a flask was 3 for £4 which was more expensive that it uses to be, I'm sure it was 3 for £3, now the are 3 for £5.

A friend of mine is a design engineer and has to visit a lot of factories. He recently went to one that packs frozen goods. He told me about a machine that weighs out frozen peas. There were tonnes of peas in a huge container that are then weighed and sent down several chutes and into different bags for different brands, Aldi, Birds Eye, M&S etc etc. Exactly the same peas going into different bags to be sold for varying prices! I’ve never bought brand name peas since he told me

I worked as QC for a food manufacturer and M&S ingredients were sourced separately and treated differently to other brands, they also had their own QC in on a regular basis

Wobblytrees · 03/02/2023 07:02

A friend who is loaded by any stretch put a well known brand of chocolate spread back on the shelf and picked own brand. She said she’s no longer buying stuff unless it’s on offer. The whole grocery shop is just extortionate and I do believe there is a lot of profiteering going on. There should be an investigation really. Panorama perhaps?!
