I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

Any house on sale in the UK 😂

Belladonna208 · 02/02/2023 14:56

MP pay and expenses seem pretty overpriced for me, especially when you consider they mostly employ their relatives as their "assistants" and have access to various other business options.

And that's pretty much regardless of what colour tie or earrings they wear, although the Tories have had the monopoly on big business buying influence since 2010....

brownbeauty80 · 02/02/2023 14:59

Those prime drinks... £15 a can or £10 a bottle...

GimmeBiscuits · 02/02/2023 14:59

Most recently, Heinz soup in my local Co-Op at £1.90 per tin. Not that long ago it had gone up to 95p and I thought that was steep. Waitrose is cheaper, as I recently discovered (not super cheap, but better priced than Co-Op)

Easy homemade pizza dough if anyone is interested

500g pizza flour (00)
320ml warm water
10g fresh yeast ( we buy in supermarket for 20p for 50g)
1tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar

Mix yeast and sugar with the warm water. Add to flour. Mix well until dough forming. Add salt.
knead 10 mins
leave to rise in bowl with wet tea towel ontop for 2-3 hours. You can keep the dough in Tupperware in the fridge for up to a week. Ie we often make Sunday afternoon and then use midweek for quick dinner.

Thats enough for 2-4 large pizzas ( depending on tray size and thickness).

2 year old makes the dough with me and likes kneading, I just give him a small part to knead himself, then add back into mix.

Mainland Eu here. Lots of very expensive now. Looking at €4 for bread, €2 cucumber, €2 for 2 pints milk

Hi to Mainland EU
( we make our own pizza dough aswell, so much nicer than shop bought too. Have you tried frying the dough and then putting the toppings on, then cheese and then under the grill.( just to heat the cheese) Saves on gas / electric in the oven and tastes so much better… we think.

Cant quite believe the cost of essentials like bread…wow
Have prices gone up recently in EU

Caspianberg · 02/02/2023 15:05

@Everyonehasavoice - we haven’t. Sounds nice, will give it a go. You can use the Same dough to make a naan bread though, we just add caraway seeds to some, roll out flat using oil and fry

Clawdy · 02/02/2023 15:11

Florentine biscuits, quite small,in our local baker shop yesterday, £2.50 each. To be fair, the assistant told me the price when she saw me picking up two. Needless to say, didn't buy them!

Antiopa12 · 02/02/2023 15:12

Coop £7.15 !!! for 160 Yorkshire tea bags. I queried but was told it was correct.

Hope you enjoy it
I forgot to say
Cook one side first once it’s stated to bubble ( the dough that is) and it’s brown on the underside turn it over. The toppings go on the cooked side.
I had some dough left over once and put i5 in the oven……we ended up with pittas bread.

So we now use the dough for pittas too, hollow in the middle 😀

Dough is so amazing isn’t it
Enjoy….have fun

Yes, this! Asda was selling them for £1.25 for a few weeks, now they have shot up tp £3! Made by Premier foods who also own Sharwoods curry sauces - they are now £3 a jar as well! I am now boycotting all of their brands.

Yep I don’t even like them that much but always were handy to have in for a super quick meal. I’d rather make my own now they’ve trebled in cost. #boycotting

Where are all the cheap packet noodles? I can't seem to find them very often now. Occasionally a quick lunch idea if can't be bothered with other things!

Poundland and Iceland do Apollo noodles which are £1.50 for 5 packets. Packets of noodles definitely have less in them now especially supernoodles.

@organisedmother I paid £2 for a babychino on Sunday. I didn't check but it used to be 50p or at most £1.

For greetings cards, I stock up at Wilko. 50p and quite nice designs. I bought 20 last time cause I'm expecting them to go up in price.

I’d query it too !! Have also noticed some very questionable practices with pricing on the shelves in some supermarkets. Not naming names, but some things I’ve come across include items placed on clearance shelves but charged at full price at the checkout (I always check now), expired offer prices left up after the deal has ended, confusing info as to which items are included in bundle offers and different items placed on offer shelves so you end up paying more than you thought.

A small fruit shoot drink(200ml)- £2.35 😬

most things I see now I think where the fk have they got that price from. But as you mentioned the sweet Isle I couldn't believe it's £8 for a bag of m&ms in asda it's not even a large bag what surprises me more is that people buy them and actually pay these stupid prices. I thought people were struggling these days obviously not if can spend £8 on a small bag of m&ms.

1kg of m&ms is hardly a small bag though is it?

Asda own brand Tiger cat food tins 12 pack have steadily increased in price over the last 3 years from £4.50 to £9.20. I've warned DH not to dare replace our recently dead 2nd cat - at the price of food, the one remaining cat can just work harder to keep us pest free!

Rebel2023 · 02/02/2023 15:42

@HistoryFanatic Aldi had a decent selection in the middle aisle

Their dog food has gone from £7 for £18.50 in about 6 months!

A friend of mine is a design engineer and has to visit a lot of factories. He recently went to one that packs frozen goods. He told me about a machine that weighs out frozen peas. There were tonnes of peas in a huge container that are then weighed and sent down several chutes and into different bags for different brands, Aldi, Birds Eye, M&S etc etc. Exactly the same peas going into different bags to be sold for varying prices! I’ve never bought brand name peas since he told me

BaileysAndNachosDontMix · 02/02/2023 16:14

One of the small 100g toblarone bars in the card factory for £5 ! It was on a shelf with other items that had £1 on the ticket price underneath so just assumed it was took that straight off when I heard the price
I can buy a full sized one for less !

Family member worked at a chicken packing place, value range in Tesco was same as m&s, just different trays

Overpriced second hand boden, frugi etc kids clothes on Vinted.

Not thanks, you can keep your kids £15 stained jumper with a hole in it!

Most branded cereals are now £4 in Tesco and Sainsbury's for a 500g box.

Madness when you can buy a supermarkets own brand for much cheaper.

Makes you wonder how many of these brands that have put their prices up extortionately will cease to exist in the coming months as they have priced themselves out of the market!

Indeed. Looking at the price differential between branded and supermarket own products now, I’m amazed anyone buys branded.

The production costs for Kelloggs Cornflakes and Sainsburys corn flakes for example must be pretty similar. Yet Kelloggs somehow justify a massive mark up on their product.

There are loads of things like that. I had a Citroen some years ago and a colleague of mine who had the equivalent Peugeot model was telling me what a mistake I had made. The Citroen may have been cheaper but the build quality was far inferior apparently.
It just so happens that my husband had been on business to the factory where these cars were made. On the same line. Literally the only difference was the badges. I didn't think that a Peugeot badge was worth a couple of thousands more than a Citroen badge but my colleague obviously did! 😂

Someone I know was given a £13k quote for kitchen cabinet installation. Not building the custom cabinets, literally just installing them. They were quoted £250 to move the fridge to the other side of the room and then push it back in place after the cabinet was in. Needless to say, they will be DIYing it.
