Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

Feels more like 'vote Tory, go broke' to me.

Well done, you've obviously annoyed the hairshirt squadron today!

karamazing · 02/02/2023 10:31

I was sad to see our local pound-a-bowl places reduce their quantities to what you would get if you purchased from a supermarket. It was only three years ago that you could get a dozen avocadoes or half an dozen mangoes. I wish I had bothered more. I don't think it will come back.

Catspyjamas17 · 02/02/2023 10:31

Whta's also annoying about Heinz Beans being £1.30+ is they are also fucking shit baked beans now. Tiny beans, hardly any and far too much (thin) sauce. They are like the Tesco "Value" ones that used to be about 9p at one point.
Aldi ones are much better, fatter beans, loads of beans, thicker sauce and 45p a tin.

Ariela · 02/02/2023 10:31

@WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody Why do you line your tupperware boxes with kitchen paper? Surely the sausages stick to it? If I line, I use baking paper, which any fat drains onto. After use, I then twist it into a firelighter and we use it to light our wood burner. (We've found newspapers don't burn as well these days).
As for washing, I almost only use my machine when the sun shines (solar, free)anyway, but dishcloths when I have half a dozen to wash, I chuck in to soak in a bowl with detergent and Vanish equivalent, and leave to soak. Then I wash and rinse by hand, and spin in the machine, and then hang to dry and reuse.

Granted a treat, but Dominos pizza. Always been expensive but now extortionate.
And yes there are offers but both my husband and I have maths degrees but convinced we never select the best deal😆

It's dropped recently, think it's £12 for a large pizza now and used to be more like £16

Homemade Baked Beans on Toast £8
A local Norfolk cafe that's reinventing itself, homemade beans are easy to make and at the moment possibly cheaper than buying a can!

Akrotiri1 · 02/02/2023 10:34

£1.20 for pot noodles in Morrisons!

Ariela · 02/02/2023 10:36

@Catspyjamas17 I think Waitrose taste much better than Aldi, great sized beans too and they're also cheaper than Aldi if you only every buy 4 at a time (55p/tin but £1.70 for 4 = 42.5p/tin )

katseyes7 · 02/02/2023 10:38

Asda Shades loo rolls. I always buy the 24 packs every couple of months.
They used to be £7.60. Since last year they've gone up and up, as far as £10.30.
Last time l bought them they've changed the 24 pack to 12 (double rolls, they seem to last as long, so l'm not disputing that) and l think they've gone down slightly.
Not something you can really do without, though, is it? I've bought cheaper but l like the Asda ones. And l could buy them at work (supermarket) and get discount, but l prefer the Asda loo roll, it seems to be better quality.

stayathomer · 02/02/2023 10:39

Another shocked by the tins of Heinz- this time spaghetti!!! I get them sometimes to have in work and I just stood there forever justifying it to myself!! But everything really, was in Aldi for a few bits the other day that came to 20 (euro). Would have been a tenner before

MeinKraft · 02/02/2023 10:43

@pam290358 I've just seen on itv news:

'British Gas has announced it will stop applying for court warrants to enter customers’ homes and fit prepayment meters, following reports they had been forced on "vulnerable" customers.'

£2.25 for a 6 pack of PomBears in Sainsburys at the weekend. They were generally £1 last year. I know the price of crisps has been creeping up but this just seemed bonkers, needless to say I didn't buy them!

Look out for Tipo 00 flour- found in the kind of Italian section of a supermarket. Best homemade pizzas (dh and ds are pizza making addicts and have tried every type of flour as an experiment and an ex chef put them onto this). Also if you’re stuck for a recipe- Jamie Oliver!

Panapan · 02/02/2023 10:44

John Lewis mattress for £15,499. I didn’t buy it.

75p fir a cucumber in Sainsburys 😱
We go through 4-5 a week

I saw that this week.

I muttered loudly and walked away without buying any.

Many veggies are so expensive (and hard to find) at the moment. We are mostly eating cabbage and carrots.

stayathomer · 02/02/2023 10:45

Panapan you (meaning I;)) would love to try it though!!!

Crumpleton · 02/02/2023 10:46

Daddies brown sauce in Tesco was £1 then up to 1.10/1.20 last week £2.
Not something I buy weekly but still a big hit for one item.

Kenco coffee £5 up to £5.50 went on offer at £4.70 back in at £6.70

I do wonder how much is due to inflation and how much is just companies piss taking.

See I have a real problem with the pricing in charity shops.
I have given some really lovely stuff to charity shops hoping that people who are struggling are able to buy good quality clothing at cheap prices.
The thought that these prices are prohibitive
to many is irksome.

I stopped giving to one local charity shop due to this.
I liked the idea of a charity raising money while someone bought an item at the blip of the full price but since it revamped the prices they are asking are over the top.

My 15 yo , who never comments on this kind of stuff l, said the other day he went into the bakery and a bun was smaller and a euro more expensive. I tried to defend them, saying the price of everything has jumped, but he was saying choose to do one of the other, and he’ll never go in there again (he’ll totally end up in there again next Friday 😅)

Agree - they’re not hard to make, and you can batch cook and freeze. Costed out per portion, they’re much cheaper, tastier and healthier as you can control salt and sugar.

I Made the mistake of buying generic 'Brown fruity Sauce'

Word of advice, don't

mumonthehill · 02/02/2023 11:00

Yes, you do have to wonder. It was mentioned upthread somewhere that price risers are faster paced in supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl. It’s hard not to come to the conclusion that they’re taking advantage of the increased footfall since the cost of living rocketed. The wholesale price of gas is coming down so when that filters through it’ll be interesting to see if food prices fall accordingly. Don’t hold your breath.

ifonly4 · 02/02/2023 11:01

Cheap by most people's standards, but Lidl yogurts this morning were £1.99 for eight, pretty sure they were 85p this time last year. DH doesn't have much calcium in his diet, but he genuinely likes these yogurts, so not really an alternative to consider.

Eyerollerhighroller · 02/02/2023 11:03

Flumps. Now 35p. I’m sure they were only 20p this time last year.
