Why does MN seem to hate people who have 'money'

Genuine question

I've read a few posts where people have asked for advice etc on a topic that heavily revolves around money or property etc

Quite often on those threads, people seem to bash them or become quite nasty even though the thread was asking for advice etc

Why does Mumsnet seem to have an issue with people who are 'weathly'? And wealthy / a high earner is different for everyone right?

Someone earning 25k a year will see someone on 50k as a high earner. Someone on 60k will see someone on 100k as a high earner and so on.

I know times are tough for some people, but it seems that people forget that some of these high earners have worked their absolute butts off to get where they are? Or is that unreasonable?

I would say that the amount they're entitled to is an abuse. Over time we've had some politicians ( yes usually conservative)come out and say that it's not the job of the taxpayer to be paying extortionate rents, (even at social rented rates) so that some people on benefits, and sometimes also in work subsidies, can live in the most expensive city in Europe for property. Ive always worked and would never have been able to afford to live London on my fairly moderate salary, yet others can, thanks to taxpayer subsidies. I totally agree with you in that it's not right.

Has anyone visited the secondary education board, recently? It's almost entirely about private education and 'the best' schools' admission policies.

I'd turn tail if I was a state school parent with a question. MN very much swings towards the wealthier end of the middle classes. So I don't see it as hostile to them at all.

I think you’ve answered your own question here, though — that board is a self-perpetuating spiral of social aspirations, social anxiety and a desperate desire to believe you can buy success, or at least an advantage, for any ordinary child. People with questions about comps are unlikely to post there. I would say it was characteristic of Mn, not so much in its likely income per household, but in its classic lower-middle-class social aspirations and anxiety.

esperate desire to believe you can buy success, or at least an advantage, for any ordinary child

you can though!

Teriyakieverything · 01/02/2023 19:57

What a sneering condescending attitude to those who aspire and try to do the best for their children.

DorritLittle · 01/02/2023 20:28

I have posted on the secondary education board asking about comps. I didn't realise I was being so desperate and aspirational!

Teriyakieverything · 01/02/2023 20:50

It’s almost as if the ‘too cool for school’ gangs have graduated into adulthood.

karamazing · 02/02/2023 10:14

I understand why I got zero replies on the Secondary board when asking about study placement recommendations for a refugee student!

Pure jealousy

Nonsense. Slealth Wealth Boasters piss me off and I'm more than comfortable.

So what have we learned from this thread?

  • Poor people and low earners don’t make good choices like the clever rich people (they’re too thick presumably)
  • Poor people and low earners don’t work as hard and don’t put in the extra shifts required to make it big (shame for you minimum wage night-time hospital cleaners and Amazon warehouse workers eh?)
  • Structural or class differentiation plays absolutely no part and inherited wealth and private education is just irrelevant and no indication whatsoever to how successful people will be.

And my personal favourite…

  • Poor people and low earners are just hateful, miserable and jealous and don’t want rich people to have any fun

Those poor, got-at, rich people. 🙄

I've been on MN for getting on for 16 years - up until about 7 or 8 years ago, I might have posted about a financial matter, but now? No chance.

We've got an inheritance issue hotting up, and while we don't need financial advice, I could do with some views on what's happening from the POV of people not involved. But to do that, I'd have to talk about big sums of money and the dreaded inheritance, so I'm bottling it.

It’s also a particular type that posts about their wealth on mumsnet.
