Children kidnapped from Home Office hotel

"A whistleblower, who works for Home Office, describes children being abducted off the street outside the hotel and bundled into cars".

How is this not top news story?? Those poor children.

not following any links, just going off my personal experience

Jamieukk · 22/01/2023 15:49

These "gangs" are foreigners. Albanians are big in the sex trafficking game. The drugs thing is a mixed bag. Vietnamese are a favorite with the cannabis farm game.

Just putting it out there. It's not Dave, Barry and Steve kidnapping these children.

FrostyNethers · 22/01/2023 15:50

How convenient. Is that because you know what you stated is not true?

BewareTheLibrarians · 22/01/2023 15:53

ShelaghsCottage · 22/01/2023 15:39

@BewareTheLibrarians There’s no obligation for asylum seekers to stop in the first safe country, and countries that we consider safe aren’t actually safe for asylum seekers

This may well be true but with the best will in the world we cannot seriously assimilate people at the rate they are arriving.

www.migrationwatchuk.org/news/2020/05/11/arrivals-via-deadly-and-illegal-channel-crossing-from-safe-countries

Please tell me your solution?

Why are you asking me? (I mean despite the fact I’ve already proposed a solution on this thread.)

Ask the government why they ignore the suggestions of safe routes which would cut the need for people to use traffickers in the first place.

Ask the govt why they let the backlog build up to unmanageable levels.

Ask the govt why they are unlawfully housing children in adult hotels despite knowing this is unlawful.

Write to your mp. But please don’t keep demanding answers from me (especially for questions I’ve already answered) because I’m not responsible for immigration policy.

well actually, we have a massive issue with internal trafficking in this country, It is a separate issue, and dealt with separately, and actually dealt with very badly.

British children trafficked by brits often get very little protection and support, because the option of moving them on to a different country isn't available, and because they are more likely to have family vulnerable to threats and abuse in the UK too. Also, there are none of the large international organisations for them to turn to for protection

It is also dealt with separately, so unlikely to be raised in a discussion, or operation dealing with international trafficking, but just because it isn't mentioned, please don't think it isn't happening.

Nimbostratus100 · 22/01/2023 15:58

London and Leeds are big centres of UK internal child trafficking, most of these children end up in the sex trade, rather than cannabis and clothing factories

WinterFoxes · 22/01/2023 16:14

ToBeOrNotToBee · 21/01/2023 22:21

This has been going on for years.

The kids end up being used for county lines and on cannabis farms.

Anyone who uses drugs is complicit in this slavery.

Thank you for saying this so clearly.

If you don't grow your own cannabis, you are taking part in a really abhorrent child slavery racket in UK. People think cannabis is a harmless drug but unless they are growing their own, they're complicit in this.

ShelaghsCottage · 22/01/2023 16:17

@Nimbostratus100 yes, of course we can, you know that our population of working age adults is falling and will continue to fall, dont you?

No,
Depends what you mean by 'falling'. Falling in comparison to what?

MarshaBradyo · 22/01/2023 16:23

Nimbostratus100 · 22/01/2023 15:45

yes, of course we can, you know that our population of working age adults is falling and will continue to fall, dont you?

Net migration is up and we can have working visas to match skills needed.

Trafficking is quite far removed from this though and needs a different approach which cuts out gang business

ShelaghsCottage · 22/01/2023 16:30

@BewareTheLibrarians Why are you asking me?

Because you are the one who is riding your own hobby horse.
(I mean despite the fact I’ve already proposed a solution on this thread.)

Well I must have missed that, my bad.

Ask the government why they ignore the suggestions of safe routes which would cut the need for people to use traffickers in the first place.

There are already 'safe legal routes'

BewareTheLibrarians · 22/01/2023 16:31

@Nimbostratus100 This article re the government reclassifying modern slavery as an immigration issue rather than a safeguarding one shows how those protections for British kids are about to get weaker:

Former Minister of Safeguarding, Rachel Maclean, had modern slavery as one of the formal duties on her list of ministerial responsibilities. However, her successor Mims Davies has no mention of the crime on her list.

Instead, modern slavery has been listed at the bottom of the “illegal migration and asylum” responsibilities held by the Minister for Immigration Tom Pursglove.

This approach effectively deprioritises victims. It also ignores that UK nationals make up a large proportion of potential victims.

How are they planning to deal with British children who’ve been trafficked? It’s a really bizarre and damaging decision - but again one designed to persecute foreigners, and if our kids get caught up in it, oh well who cares.

ShelaghsCottage · 22/01/2023 16:32

@MarshaBradyo Net migration is up and we can have working visas to match skills needed.

Yes, absolutely.

Boomboom22 · 22/01/2023 16:37

Legalise cannabis and tax it like alcohol, as long as its not done in a way that requires record keeping everyone would buy it legally. The gov would make loads of money.no9ne buys bootleg alcohol deliberately so this

BewareTheLibrarians · 22/01/2023 16:40

@ShelaghsCottage Yes, there are a limited number of safe routes - for Afghanistan*, Hong Kong and Ukraine as your link shows. There was one for Syria, which appears to be closed now. There’s no safe routes for anyone outside of those countries (apart from UNHCR resettlement which is incredibly difficult to access from certain countries). Family reunification scheme rules have been tightened and have to meet strict conditions.

Can you find the safe routes for people from Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan? Eritrea and Iran especially as there’s where a majority of asylum seekers UK come from. I’ll save you a google, there aren’t any. I wonder if you missed this gem? Suella Braverman stating that outside of those limited schemes you’ve mentioned, the only way for a person to seek asylum is to arrive on British soil.

news.sky.com/story/amp/suella-braverman-fails-to-explain-how-asylum-seekers-can-get-to-uk-safely-and-legally-12753780

(Also not widely know but one of the schemes for Afghanistan that was to help staff who’d worked with British companies escape the Taliban only took 4 people since being set up when the UK withdraw troops. Many have had to flee the Taliban and have come to the UK via boat as they thought the UK would protect them.)

BewareTheLibrarians · 22/01/2023 16:46

riding your own hobby horse.

That’s a weird way to say “cares about children being kidnapped”

Seriously, why do you need to be rude? Sorry if I’ve somehow hurt your feelings by correcting the home office and providing links you asked for. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I’d much rather be in the position of “riding this hobby horse” than trying to “yes but” attention away from children getting kidnapped and trafficked.

ShelaghsCottage · 22/01/2023 16:46

Whether I did or not isn't the issue.
In this area under discussion, demand is infinite and resources are finite.
So tell me why UK is responsible for taking all these people?

BewareTheLibrarians · 22/01/2023 16:51

It is the issue. You stated there were safe routes (correct) I explained they don’t cover all countries (also correct).

So you changed the topic. Where did anyone say the UK is responsible for taking “all these people”? The UK has obligations under the 1951 refugee convention, which answers the why.

Why are resources finite, underfunded and in most cases not even available to British people?

BewareTheLibrarians · 22/01/2023 16:56

And sorry, I’m not entirely sure why a thread about the lack of safeguarding of asylum seeking children leading to them being kidnapped and trafficked needs to turn into a discussion about how the Uk is “full” and “how are we supposed to take all these people”.

How about we make sure the ones we already have aren’t getting massively retraumatised before we move on to the next issue?

How about we hold the government to account for this shocking abdication of their duties without whatabouting about every asylum-related topic under the sun?

@BewareTheLibrarians i wouldn’t bother, the poster clearly isn’t engaging and is just spoiling for a fight. You’re posts have been clear and well backed up, and are great for anyone else who stumbles upon this thread and would like to learn more

BewareTheLibrarians · 22/01/2023 17:02

@PinkFrogss 😁 They show themselves up every time, don’t they. Thank you for the kind words.

MarshaBradyo · 22/01/2023 17:02

We have a trafficking problem which appears to be resulting in a high acceptance rate for a safe country making us an outlier.

That article is very poor wrt facts, it doesn’t specify age or origin but has unspecified sources as quotes. Typical of that paper but it’s not that useful.

I don’t know the origin but I do think we have an issue re Albanian trafficking which other countries seem to have zero tolerance on - in terms of acceptance rates anyway.

My preference is to look at what they are doing differently

@PinkFrogss You are mistaken as I have engaged.

The poster you have referred to has only quoted selective information to support their argument. IMO they obviously have an agenda.

Just because my views differ doesn't mean I am 'spoiling for a fight'.

The US used to make people apply for asylum in Mexico (serving those in Central America). That was actually a much better policy than what is happening to their southern border right now.

Consider that places like Kenya already host refugees from South Sudan and the like, so why not get your intake there after thorough background checks, whilst not allowing any irregular entries at all? You can prioritise women, the elderly, and families with young children too.
