Children kidnapped from Home Office hotel

"A whistleblower, who works for Home Office, describes children being abducted off the street outside the hotel and bundled into cars".

How is this not top news story?? Those poor children.

The housing Ukrainians was a far more straight forward process than fostering a child. Also, homing Ukrainians does not come with social work support. This, doubtless party accounts in the disparity of numbers of those wishing to support each group

mackthepony · 22/01/2023 02:18

So basically, we should not really be accepting these refugees as we're enabling slavery. We cannot accept them in a legal fashion

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/01/2023 02:25

Child protection is a disgrace in this country.

No we should accept them and protect them.

You can’t decide not to take asylum seekers just because you can’t be bothered

2023bebetter · 22/01/2023 06:33

I don't know if anyone has noticed but we can't protect the children already living here ?
The care system isn't fit for purpose anyway.

How on earth is it supposed to cope with more children? .

It was already horrendous and children in care are already exposed to evil Wicked people.
Then we had massive problems with the sheer volume of number's from Romania/Lithuania etc and now this.

Foster care is in crisis, care homes are now run by some awful private companies, was it capita?

Non of it is fit for purpose, and Rotherham etc happened under a labour government.

But people want to have more unaccompanied children here. ?

Personally I'd like to stop anymore entering the defunct system and a total rehaul of all we do in a any way towards children in every way including school.

Foxywood · 22/01/2023 06:57

^^ I agree

MarshaBradyo · 22/01/2023 07:02

Is it part of the trafficking - ie gangs bring them over with intention to pick them up

Close the trafficking routes

Although not easy to do

crochetmonkey74 · 22/01/2023 07:06

I have heard of this before also but not only refugee children. A few years ago I was watching a programme about trafficking. It was the type where a person will talk to the camera and in between will be reports, or reconstructions. There was a guy on there in shadow who was a nightwatchman for a business. The business faced a housing estate. He regularly would see white vans pulling up in the early hours. Men would get out and then load children in the back. On the programme he said he photographed it and went to the police. He was told not to worry about it. I've never found the programme again but it was on normal telly not YouTube and no crazy conspiracy theorist etc. It's always stuck with me

This isn’t news. It’s been widely known for some time that human traffickers are trafficking minors across the channel and then collecting them at the hotels being contracted to house asylum seekers.

Yep The Guardian and a few other news outlets have reported this before.

PAFMO · 22/01/2023 07:09

Ted27 · 21/01/2023 22:43

Most people don't care about refugees or asylum seekers, p children or otherwise, as long as they are housed as far away from them as possible

As witnessed every day on here by the not-in-my-backyard posters. There was a thread yesterday where they all polished their jackboots and worried about their house prices if the brown men came.

What is your answer though. Would you foster children to help stop it?

Lollipop999 · 22/01/2023 07:19

Surely this makes it even more important to stop these crossings asap?

We do not have enough safe accommodation or foster places for our own children, which in itself is a travesty.

I can’t believe that the government and presumably previous governments have knowledge of this but aren’t able to do anything constructive to stop these dangerous crossings or intercept or track down and prosecute the traffickers? It’s absurd and sad.

No.

I'm an English teacher. Not my job to solve it or come up with an answer.

Wrongsideofpennines · 22/01/2023 07:25

It's not headline news because the public don't see then as children - think of how many people believe there are 40 year old blokes masquerading as teenagers in schools.
And because the public don't see them as 'one of us'. They see them as foreign criminals and couldn't care less. Because that's the image that the government and media portray.

Instead of vulnerable, traumatised children being forced into modern slavery because the government who is meant to protect them doesn't give a toss. And because there is no public outrage there is no need to do anything about it. Its absolutely horrifying.

Yes it’s not easy to solve however some will do the outcry solve it. Also when pp say they should be fostered I wouldn’t recommend it unless they are willing.

Strong online views to feel better aren’t solutions either just posturing tbh

How would you stop them entering the system though? What would that look like, how would we do it?

Strathyre · 21/01/2023 22:36

I've just seen this too, I feel physically sick. So we are putting children (who are likely already frightened in a new country without family) in hotels where they are then being targeted by organised gangs. But it's not a top news item because we don't really see them as children - I think there's this image that they are hardened criminals gaming the system. There are more political points to be won by deterring them than protecting them, which should be a source of shame for the whole country.

It’s not a top news item because it’s not new, news. I am really shocked so many didn’t know this goes on. It’s been happening for years.

ShelaghsCottage · 22/01/2023 07:28

I would like to know what is meant by 'children'? What actual age are they?

Protect them with what resources exactly? We don’t have enough to protect the children already here, never mind thousands more.

Well what does children usually mean? The definition doesn't change because they're "foreigners".

THisbackwithavengeance · 22/01/2023 07:34

Putting them in foster care would make no difference at all. They would be picked up from outside their foster homes. There is nothing anyone can do short of locking them up.

You do understand that a percentage of those who make the channel crossings in small boats are not caught. The aim of many of the migrants is not to come here and claim asylum. They come from places like Albania and Vietnam which may be poor but are not dangerous. Their aim is to come and work here undetected. If caught by immigration, they claim asylum to thwart removal and then promptly disappear at the first available opportunity.

If people stopped smoking weed, then demand for the services of these trafficked kids and adults in grow houses would dry up. But try telling people that - even on Mumsnet- and nobody is interested; as long as they get their drugs, no one gives a shit about trafficked kids.

Roselilly36 · 22/01/2023 07:35

Wherever you stand on immigration, these children have entered our country and deserve protection and safety, completely unacceptable for children to go missing.

ShelaghsCottage · 22/01/2023 07:28

Usually 16-17.

Some of the language on this thread is a little emotive. They aren't putting 9 year olds into hotels.

Well what do you propose should happen to these trafficked children then? Should we just skip a step and let the traffickers come and collect them?
