Sex and gender and entirely duffest things.

Please stop going on about those born with testicles and ovary, because that is a very very tiny % of the population, not the norm.

I know that. I just responded to the comment that said having a cock/vagina determines sex. It doesn't, does it?

BellePeppa · 17/01/2023 21:37

I use the term biological sex. I don’t use the term gender at all if I can help it. I also call gender neutral stuff unisex just like we did in the 70s. I’d be happy if the word gender never passed my lips again, I’m sick of the word. It’s not the only word I’m sick of though.

twanmever · 17/01/2023 22:33

I honestly don't understand why people are worried about using the word 'sex' rather than 'gender'. Gender is some pissy phrase imported from America which means absolutely fuck all.

What's wrong with using sex to describe the physical attributes of either an adult human male or adult human female? I've always considered gender as being some sneaky way of describing sex which we've imported from the US of A. I know exactly what a woman is, and what a man is. If people are upset that I know what a man or woman is I really don't give a fuck.

I still remember being quizzed by a bank manager in 1982 because I had the temerity to get a mortgage in just my name. I remember women not being able to name their rapists because they were married to them. I remember the women of Iran looking like us, with short skirts and socialising with men of their age. I

t's too easy to lose all of this because some people can't be arsed to stand up and be counted. Look to the past to see your potential future. Not men of course, they're much more special than we are. Please stand up for your rights, it's so much more important that you might realise.

I think it is unfortunate that the word in English for someone's sex is the same as the word for doing the deed. If they were two different words, people wouldn't be so squeamish about saying "sex" when talking about male and female.

This. Nobody wants to invite their aunty for a ‘sex reveal party’.

Sex not gender except when it's actually about gender.

Clear language is our friend.

But what is gender?

hadntbeen · 17/01/2023 22:49

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz gender is a social construct which is fluid. Men can wear pink. Girls can play with trucks. Doesn't really matter. But biological sex is unchanging, no matter how much pink boys wear, or what body parts they cut off, their biological sex will never change.

I agree, I'm so sick of seeing or hearing the word gender when what they mean is sex! So bloody ridiculous, especially when talking about newborns. I also saw that gender reveal thread on active, and wanted to say it's bloody sex! But figured I'd get piled on. Why have people gone backwards - are people more prudish now?

I agree with you on the biology. I'm on your side of this. Why does men wearing pink and girls playing with trucks need a word? Isn't it just men wearing clothes and girls playing with toys?

Unless gender means girls and boys can only play with designated things/wear designated things and to do otherwise means your "gender" is fluid?

Why have the word gender at all?

If you are born with a cock you are a male if you have a vagina you are female. always.

What about the people born with both testicles and ovary? The organs you mention isn't the part that determines your sex/gender, really.

Both internal and external genetalia are totally unambiguous in 99.98 % of births. The existence of dsds doesn't undermine sex classes any more than the existence of humans with two many or few digits or limbs undermine the fact that humans have ten fingers, ten toes, 2 arms and 2 legs.

Though I have no issue with recognising people with actual dsds in any way that makes sense to them, regardless of sex (unless they go through male puberty and want to rake in the medals), it does piss me off when congenital developmental problems and language around gender are used to try and undermine the sex classes in the name of gender ideology.

I can say with some certainty what sex isn't. It isn't a feeling and it isn't a way of behaving, dressing or being treated. That's gender.

At the baby scan place they were selling ‘gender cannons’ and I was gonna correct them until I realised no one wants a sex cannon going off at a family event

😆

WalkthisWayUK · 18/01/2023 00:10

I think the most progressive thing we could do as a society is get rid of gender!

We are born male or female. We can express ourselves however we want, a woman can love rugby, wear trousers, a man can wear skirts and lipstick. Whatever! We are still born male or female and ANY attempt to ‘name’ an identity such as trans, non binary or whatever is regressive in that in attempts to box in expressions of sex and put them all into neat little boxes with pronouns on.

Gender can go take a hike!

But what is gender?

Societal expectations of appearance, behavior and preferences based around sex, very roughly linked to traits and sexual characteristics more likely to be displayed by one sex class or the other. Perceived masculine/feminine traits.

When a male dog is neutered, he’s still a male dog.

asquideatingdough · 18/01/2023 00:25

I think even in the most extreme cases of DSD no one is born with both ovaries and testicles. There are no true "hermaphrodites".

Do you mean individuals with disorders of sexual development? They are ANOMALIES. We are a sexually dimorphic species.

Do humans have less than 2 legs or 2 arms because in some very rare babies are born missing a limb?

MissyB1 · 18/01/2023 18:46

Ahem… where can I buy a sex cannon? Asking for a friend…..

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/01/2023 19:20

I agree with a pp that "gender" is perceived as more coy than "sex" but it means totally different things and isn't interchangeable.

We need to have "sex reveal parties" (if we need them at all - but that's a whole other thread) and do away entirely with the ridiculous "assigned M or F gender at birth".

It's so important. I'm never so pompous that I'll correct people on their SPAG, but this gender nonsense is completely driving me mad.

Oh please, there are so few people that are born into this category yet this is used as constant justification as to the madness that is going on today. The irony is those few poor people would probably do anything to be normal, and are probably very preplexed as to why so many people want to actually mutilate themselves to replicate their misfortune.
