Ken Bruce leaving Radio 2

Just heard Ken Bruce announce he's leaving radio 2 in March.
Him and Steve Wright were the only reason I listened to Radio 2.
What am I going to listen to now?
Can't stand commercial radio, too old for Radio 1, any ideas please?

Radio as a whole is terrible nowadays. I flick through stations while driving to work and it's challenge sometimes to hear any music, it seems like on some stations music is the lowest priority after adverts and talking. BBC should have a station that just plays music, which would save money on paying an absurdly highly paid "DJ" to talk rubbish in between.

bellabelly · 17/01/2023 23:54

Also, I love Scott Mills! Can't understand all the negative comments on here!

Chumpfriend · 18/01/2023 00:00

The issue with GHR is the music. It’s like being at a bad wedding. There’s no new music at all - just ‘chooons’ . As if your entire diet was made up of chocolate. You need some new stuff, some you haven’t heard, some you don’t like, otherwise it’s an echo chamber.
Not to mention the Smashy and Nicey fill in DJs, the adverts and the cash GIVEAWAYS.
R2 was the sound of my kid’s childhoods - don’t do daytime TV - not sure where to set the dial now.

I love Ken...I knew this day was coming, but a bit surprised he's not retiring (surely has enough in the pe ish pot by now!)
I barely get one point in pop master but I'll miss the music geeks and Ken being really warm to them.

He got me through a few rough years and he's my comfort radio. Lost Simon, Graham and now Maria. I would pay to listen to them all, but not with ads and not with no new music, I'm not dead yet!

Please don't come for Lisa, Micheal, Trevor....they are the soundtrack to my week and I would genuinely be heartbroken if Trevor moved on somewhere with ads.

tappinginto2023 · 18/01/2023 00:11

Sorry, I'm barely making sense!

But a vote for OJ - not Gary (surely he's too old if they want to promote younger blood).

DaVariance · 18/01/2023 00:14

Vernon Kay would be a good choice.

I miss Chris Evans

DaVariance · 18/01/2023 00:14

Yes Vanessa Feltz would be perfect

DaVariance · 18/01/2023 00:15

As would O J Borg

Coffeecreme · 18/01/2023 04:40

i miss steve wright music, cannot bear scott mills music

billysboy · 18/01/2023 08:20

Maybe it will be Ritchie Anderson ?

Ken jumped before being pushed I think , end of an era

Preserve us from this . A traffic announcer that some seem to want to turn into a megastar.

Just no.

THisbackwithavengeance · 18/01/2023 12:38

Can't believe that posters don't like Scott Mills! I love his show; I couldn't bear Steve Wright.

But Ken will be missed.

MothralovesGojira · 18/01/2023 13:18

We'll be following Ken to his new station. My brother and I have had a weekly Pop Master competition have going on for a long time and Ken/Poppy kept us going through his wife's sudden death and my cancer treatment. Hopefully we can carry on as we find Ken's voice & manner very soothing.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 18/01/2023 15:57

I'll be following Ken to his new station too. It'll be interesting to see how far R2 listening figures plummet after his departure, and how laughably entertaining their excuses will be. They won't admit to their mistakes though - you don't try to get new listeners by disregarding the old faithfuls - a sure fire way to go out of business.

TheLittlestThings · 18/01/2023 16:03

Listening to Scott Mills now.. I don't get the hate I think he's doing a good job!

Florenz · 18/01/2023 17:26

The BBC would be better off if they just started a new radio station for youth every 20-30 years or so and leave the existing stations alone. Instead they have to piss off their older listeners in order to attract younger ones.

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2023 17:35

I'm gutted too. And my DAB radio in my rural kitchen just can't manage GHR. I can't listen to Virgin either after I tried to follow Graham over on a Saturday. Just static and whistling. Luckily, I love Claud so it's not too bad.

Hell no to Gary Davies and his hospital radio/comedy tie vibe. OJ or Vernon would work.

ThreeRingCircus · 18/01/2023 17:49

Scott Mills is so much better than Steve Wright in my opinion, I couldn't bear Steve Wright singing over the end of all the songs!

I'm absolutely gutted if Popmaster goes. I think Vernon would be the best replacement for Ken.

ohyouknowwhatshername · 18/01/2023 18:06

I'm upset that Ken's going from R2. I started listening to him when I was off sick with hyperemesis, then listened on maternity leave. There's something comforting about him. I can't stand Gary Davies, Vernon or Scott Mills. I'm one of those rare people who actually likes Jeremy Vine.

cakeorwine · 18/01/2023 18:41

If I find myself driving during the week, then it's always PopMaster at 10.30.

Not that that happens very often but it is an institution

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/01/2023 18:52

As a Scott Mills refusenik (how can you all bear him, has he stopped mentioning he went to Eurovision with Rylan every 5 minutes?) I've tried to listen to a commercial radio station this afternoon. It's totally miserable with the same 5 adverts every 15 minutes.

I love Liza and Claudia but they are busy doing other things and their shows are too niche for a 5 days a week slot. I'm really interested to know who the powers that be think should fill that mid morning to lunchtime slot. My vote is for OJ - I quite like him. But that all depends on who is willing to commit to a 5 days a week show.

I do believe Ken is going of his own accord rather than being kicked out.

HattieMacTattie · 18/01/2023 19:21

@Cathyandchris 100% with you! Why do they keep giving DJ jobs to presenters?! How are real DJs ever going to get these job's?

It's the same on TV, "celebrities" getting presenting jobs all the time, some/most of them are so shit!

PollyEsther · 18/01/2023 19:22

I don’t understand the Scott Mills/Zoe Ball hate. Dare I say it… might it be a generational thing? I’ve been listening to radio 2 since childhood, never been into radio 1 (too shouty!) and I’m loving the new voices! Adore Rylan on the radio. Don’t see what’s so offensive about Ritchie either!
The music is considerably improved since Steve left, and nobody makes inane noise over the end of every song…
That said, I love Ken and it’s sad to see him go. JV can feel free to leave now too. Not keen on the Daily Hate hours in the middle of the day.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/01/2023 19:32

Nah, it's not generational so do eff off with your weird ageist theorising.

I like Zoe and listen to her. She is 52. I like Claudia and she is 51. Scott is only a couple of years younger.
