Friend and her BIG house

subtoprem · 17/01/2023 06:19

I have a friend I met through a hobby about five years ago.

She lives in a big house that I've been to quite a few times, so I'm fully aware, but she drops it in conversation all the time. Is this weird?

Eg. I moan about having some cleaning to do, her "think yourself lucky you don't have to clean my big house!"

Conversation about when our kids were growing up "well, I've been lucky living in a big house, so much easier with space"

Inane chat about the size of her dog "yes, I'm so glad I have a big house!"

Seriously, it gets shoehorned into a conversation every time we meet (maybe once a month)

I don't care about the size of her house 😂

Ha ha. You couldn't resist could you? I knew there'd be at least one who got so exercised by my perceived good fortune/lack of good fortune that they couldn't help those fingers hitting the keyboard in a fury. Love it 😆

Have you understood that nobody cares what sort of house you live in?

The subject of the thread is people shoehorning references to their big house into conversations on a different subject. Think hard about that. Really concentrate.

Do none of these people know what was traditionally referred to as 'the big house'? The one that you live in free of charge at the Queen/King's pleasure?!

Yes, Jim McDonald from Coronation Street spent time in one of those, didn’t he?

You could envisage a house with four bedrooms, an en suite bathroom to every room and a separate "family" bathroom with a downstairs toilet/shower room, which although a bit excessive isn't totally over the top.

You lost me at 'isn't totally over the top' !! Who is using the family bathroom if all the family have their own en-suites?!

I dunno. Guests ? depends how big each of the four bedrooms are and whether they are coupled up. A HMO for example ?

Partner of person in bedroom 1 who is using the ensuite ?

En suites have small baths, famility bathroom has big expesnive tub/jaccuzi ?

Maybe a new thread. Is a house with 4 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms unreasonable :)

wanders into the thread singing you're a mean one Mr Grinch

I hope you feel happier soon my dear x

Probably! I can see it with an HMO, maybe.

My DGPs had a 3-bedroom house and had one of the bedrooms converted to a bathroom - but that then took their total number of (indoor) bathrooms to one!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2023 12:33

Why is it now a thing to put loads of bathrooms into new houses, but you don't seem to see new (intended single-family) houses designed with multiple kitchens?!

If you have multiple family members all needing a wee/poo/shower at the same time, what about families with teenagers who prefer to do their own thing at meal times or younger children who like to prepare food in the style of Sooty?!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2023 12:16

apparantly nothing compares to having a good roast in your own 'proper house'.

Are you sure she wasn't trying to invite you to join them in something else quite different there?!

😂😂

It was indeed en-suites for every room, plus a downstairs bathroom plus a main family bathroom on the first floor.

Just a lot of plumbing.

Some folk are just tone deaf and cannot pick up on their remarks as being insensitive to others.

I spend less than 1000 Australian dollars yearly on electricity bills - heating, air-con and the rest. I don't have gas but I have 20 solar panels on my roof, like most on my street and everywhere in Australia.

The issue with the OP is not about a friend boasting about her big house, it's why, if she's a friend, hasn't she raised her resentments with her.

Cool, however the cost to heat a 6 bed house in the U.K. could be easily be £3000 and double in the current energy crisis.

THIS! I want to see this on TV.....Gordon Ramsey in the style of Sooty!....MasterSooty.....Great Sooty BakeOff......

😀

I’d think they were very insecure about something

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2023 12:54

I now have 'If I Were A Rich Man' going around in my head:

Well no I think the take home from the thread is that many people care exactly how big other people’s houses are to the point they’re resentful if it’s even mentioned.

Thing is, mine isn't exactly small but I think it would still get on my nerves someone going on about the size of theirs all the time, nothing to do with jealousy, but the tedious nature of that sort of thing. Never met old money with the need to brag.

Talking about big houses and expenditure is not the real issue for the OP in her original post or subsequent ones. She's whinging about her friend talking about "her big house" without context or answering questions why she had not raised the issue with her.

Looks like she just wanted a whinge.

Thindog · 17/01/2023 13:02

She has been a really good friend to you, so put up with her little foibles-everyone has them! Or next time she mentions it say, “Are you bragging or complaining? “ then laugh.

I don’t think I’d notice and if I did I can’t imagine caring.

Old money not bragging is one of the oldest myths of the internet.

Yeah and maybe the friend does too.

GasPanic · 17/01/2023 13:10

TBH I am proud of my 3 toilets and don't really care if I am accused of excessive numbers of toilets boasting.

If someone started boasting at me about high ceilings I would just throw my 3 toilets right back at them.

You're never more than a few metres away from a toilet in my place.

Actually it has apparently become a thing in big expensive new builds to have a second kitchen where all the grunt work is done and the big fancy kitchen is just where you prepare croissants and coffee, I think they might call the butler’s pantry or something.

Wow, I'm well ahead of the trend curve, aren't I?!

I always thought that a 'butler's special' was more of a bathroom thing, though?! Grin

Iateallthechips · 17/01/2023 13:33

Anyone remember the prolific poster on here who used to trump every house thread by letting us know that she had two stair cases.

And one lead up from the kitchen, don’t you know!

I’m quite pissed off that she never told us how many bogs she had.

My one and only kitchen is about the size of a butlers pantry.

From now on, i’ll be pretending I have a massive cellar with the actual kitchen in it. Can you see it? No, you can’t. You might contaminate it with poor.
