I am sure this has probably be done before but I was listening to Caroline Hirons saying she did not wear cardigans as she felt it was something her Grandma wore. Though I do not agree I was just looking up future cruises and decided Saga not for me . It would be for older people (I am 63!!). I just imagine loads of white cauliflower hairstyles. I know it is ageist and unreasonable (I know they have jeople going from 55 years).what are you too young for????

I think it's liberating not to care too much .

I will happily wear footwear such as hotter and sketchers which are often slated as frumpy or ageing - because walking rather than driving is much healthier - and much better if your feet don't hurt . Likewise I can see the appeal of a shopping trolley !

I think its good to have friends of a variety of ages both older and younger than your current age .

The one thing that I do have a feeling of being both too young and too old for is the MOTB/MOTG clothing style and I'm dreading it when DS gets married - I think it's about the formality of the dresses with their nude tights and heels.

Penny Lane, so not one of their more well known ones apparently? I'm grateful it's also one of the easier Beatles tracks to learn, and the women I sit with gave me a Beatlesmania history lesson at the same time, then asked if I knew a few others (Blackbird and Here Comes The Sun were two I did know that were asked about)

I thought that one was much more famous than either of the others! But then I am a fan.

I honestly think there is a generation "blind spot" where you just cannot see the attraction of things your parents or childrens generation do. Crochet, quilting, cardigans and choirs are all bang on trend and all over instagram. They are no way the exclusive preserve of the elderly.

Also there is a difference between age and generation. I don't dress or have the lifestlyle at 53 like my mother did in the 1990s or my gran in the 1970s. We are all writing the book on what it is to be 50/60/70 in the 2020s.

I think this is true .

Comments about craft hobbies like crocheting remind me of the current trend for babies / young children having names I would associate with my grandmother's generation .

Ah, see I only know the other two from them being on Glee, and my parents didn't listen to The Beatles when I was younger, it was Bruce Springsteen and Ozzy Osbourne (DM was partial to 80s/90s girl groups as well) that I grew up with until I was able to buy my own CDs.
I genuinely can't remember either of my grandma's listening to music that wasn't church or choral music, same with aunts or uncles we visited, so it's all circumstance in my case

Is wearing slippers an "old" thing? Surely even teenagers don't want cold feet? Some styles are a bit dated, but the concept itself surely isn't an age thing?

Ive always loved slippers. Cant stand having nothing on my feet
I have quiet the collection and most are very unattractive ha.

I'm too young to have grey hairs, I'm 34 and have been greying since I was 22.

I also shop in Bon Marche, and bitterly regret getting rid of two David Emmanuel dresses and a couple of skirts I got from there during a clear out. 😭 They have some nice things in there! Currently eyeing up a black velvet tiered skirt I saw in there. 🖤

Whatever it is if it’s something you like then just do it! What does it matter the age? I attend a WI where the average age is about 35 and we have amazing sessions that are fun. I also go on holidays to Landmark Trust cottages every year. I also still go to clubs and pubs on the regular. Life is too short to categorise the stuff you like into age brackets!

Chibbers · 17/01/2023 17:14

@snowlolo can you show me where I've called anyone a snowflake or any other name for that matter? Correct, you can't.
Anyway, this old woman is enjoying the thread, ageist or not.

When we first got an allotment I felt we brought the average age down by several decades. Now with older members having given up we are definitely the average age.

Also noticed that ordering seed catalogues had put me into the Damart thermal underwear demographic.

Damart is utter rubbish. My mum passed one of their jumpers on to me and it pilled and matted within about five minutes.

At nearly 55 I’m definitely too young for Saga.

My friend got a ‘three wheeler’ motorbike so I’d be more comfy and he’d be more stable. Haha lasted 6 months and we’re back to a proper bike. Though I can’t sling my leg over the back with the same abandon I once could 😂😂

Yet still youngish at biker meets.

I have not just one, but four pairs of slippers, which are assigned different jobs:

Bathroom / post shower slippers (towelling mules)
Soft-soled ballerina pumps for general pottering
Fluffy boots for keeping my feet cosy when WfH
Hard-soled moccasins for taking the bins out etc

My sister mocks me, but having a rigid system means I always have warm feet and clean floors.

I'm 43. I thought I had a few good years left in me yet, but I think those died the day I bought the moccasins.

Maybe you were Japanese in a previous life?

Chibbers · 18/01/2023 07:00

I've always loved my slippers and cardies.
Maybe I ought to buy my OH a pipe, even though he's never smoked to complete the look?

Deathraystare · 18/01/2023 07:42

@Martha645 ·
I recently bought a cardigan but my husband was horrified - he says cardigans are "old people's clothes". I am 81.

Oh Bless! He still sees you as the 'girl' he married!

@Sasha07

Me too! Never used to feel the cold. People used to be horrified at me in my tshirts whilst they wore jumpers and cardis and jackets. I am still more able to tolerate the cold than most of my friends and co workers but just now and again I do feel it. Like today, I may be wearing my duvet coat but unfortunately my trousers are too thin. Brrr!

I sometimes go to a Warners holiday with friends (yes I know that ages me!) but we have a great time.

Anyway one night they had some dancers (not sure if professional or amateur but very good) all must have been at least 70s I think doing rock n roll dancing. Bloody terrific and it amused me to think of nowadays youngsters who might eventually turn up at a Warners and if they would be dancing to whatever these young people listen to nowadays!

Age is just a number I’m 33 and would rather chat with a older person more sense x

Completely agree.
I visited an elderly relative in his sheltered accommodation the other week and asked him what he gets up to. He said well, you're alright if you like bingo or knitting and rolled his eyes.

I'm loving some of the posts on here.
I started on radio 2 about 3 years ago, well before 40. I tried radio one and felt confused and lost 😂
