I am too young for that!!!!

I am sure this has probably be done before but I was listening to Caroline Hirons saying she did not wear cardigans as she felt it was something her Grandma wore. Though I do not agree I was just looking up future cruises and decided Saga not for me . It would be for older people (I am 63!!). I just imagine loads of white cauliflower hairstyles. I know it is ageist and unreasonable (I know they have jeople going from 55 years).what are you too young for????

My 80 year old mother refuses to use her A frame walker outside as she doesn't want to look like an old woman.

Old People Music.

And then I realised, from the muted reaction upon on telling some (rather younger) colleagues I was going to a Pixies gig and had really enjoyed the last Placebo gig I went to, that I am absolutely, in their eyes, a connoisseur of Old Music People.

I like that and even older people music 😃 from the 60s etc. I also snigger when I see kids wearing Nirvana tishirts.

Plus my dd got a new ohone at Christmas and had to change the ringtone because it was 'an old person's ringtone' which is presumably what I have.

Thermal vests. I'm freezing in winter and some thermals would really solve that problem. But I'm too young!! (I am almost 40)

My 16 year old DD wears thermal vests and has been since she was 14. I don't but I like her having them because they remind me of my mum and has recently taken me on various primark expeditions to find thermal tights and thermal leggings and she cares a lot about what she looks like!

That's us told then.
I don't see any ageism here, and I'm old, some on this thread are even older!
Happy to be called a cool kid though, it's made my day. Cheers 😁

So you don't think that people saying they are too young to enjoy knitting or wear slippers is ageist (i.e. there is no problem with a stereotype of old people sitting at home knitting in their slippers?)

For the record I'm not personally into any of these hobbies and I'm not a Gen Z/ Millenial, but I just think it's a stereotype and actually is quite ageist in a low level, under the bar way.

It's fine to call people snowflakes or whatever for calling things out, if that makes you feel good about yourself.

And obviously, it's not the worst thing to ever happen on an online forum 😅 No one is upset about it and I'm not going to lose sleep over it!

But 'under the radar', 'mild', 'lighthearted' discrimination like this is the stuff that perpetuates, partly because of people like you saying it doesn't matter - and I'd rather live in a society where people comment on it than not.

ReneBumsWombats · 17/01/2023 12:45

Is wearing slippers an "old" thing? Surely even teenagers don't want cold feet? Some styles are a bit dated, but the concept itself surely isn't an age thing?

NotMeNoNo · 17/01/2023 12:46

I honestly think there is a generation "blind spot" where you just cannot see the attraction of things your parents or childrens generation do. Crochet, quilting, cardigans and choirs are all bang on trend and all over instagram. They are no way the exclusive preserve of the elderly.

Also there is a difference between age and generation. I don't dress or have the lifestlyle at 53 like my mother did in the 1990s or my gran in the 1970s. We are all writing the book on what it is to be 50/60/70 in the 2020s.

Hollyhead · 17/01/2023 12:46

@snowlolo I agree this thread reveals a lot of internalised ageism, and I think it’s fine to call it out, indeed discussing and challenging issues is what moves us on as a society. For instance chunky cardigans have been very trendy and fashionable for a few years now so I just find it strange they would be seen as an older item.

However, reporting a thread and engaging in a hostile rather than discursive way is a bit much for me, and is a bit too 1984/hostile totalitarian state for my liking.

lightand · 17/01/2023 12:49

Why people cant just have discussions about these types of things is beyond me.
Perhaps I am too old to understand! Grin

lightand · 17/01/2023 12:50

The thought police is a far bigger concern in my opinion.

Cuppasoupmonster · 17/01/2023 12:52

Internalised ageism 🥱 why is everyone so desperate to be a victim?

Notoldenoughforthisshit · 16/01/2023 22:25

I name changed for this because I posted on social media about it. I’m a teacher and recently took my children on a trip where we saw old mobile phones; they asked if I had owned any of them and there I saw my first two phones! I am not old enough to have the technology from my teen years in a museum!

Don't feel too bad about this, museums often do contemporary collecting which can mean something brand new can be on display - sometimes direct from the producer or manufacturer - within months of production.

WI - a friend suggested we join but I feel like I'm way too young to even consider it (I'm 48)

I'd love to join the WI if there was one in my area. I'm only 27 but it's always seemed fun to me!

@Agapornis @Brahumbug

At motorcycle meets I'm one of the young 'uns at 50, it's great! There's a couple of teens and a handful of 20-30 somethings, I'm not the youngest but the younger ones always sit at my table!

Hollyhead · 17/01/2023 13:15

@Cuppasoupmonster I’m broadly on the side of people enjoying the thread for what it is. I think anyone who doesn’t want to appear old does have internalised ageism (myself included) definitely doesn’t make anyone a victim though.

gogohmm · 17/01/2023 13:16

But dsd is currently wearing a cardigan practicing for choir rehearsal, she's in her 20's - I think stereotyping isn't helpful

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2023 13:20

I've not seen the remotest sign of hatred, belittling or unkindness towards older people - the same group that we are all eventually becoming too - just a lighthearted, good-natured sharing of our experiences as our lives move on and change.

Why is it so terrible to point out the obvious fact that older, retired folk are likely to have more free time to spend at home than younger people, but less energy and spriteliness?

Surely, the whole point of an 'ism' - and the reason why it's so poisonous - is when there is malice or othering intended; not when we are fondly framing ourselves within the extension of our own group of loved members of society of all ages.

MidnightMeltdown · 17/01/2023 13:32

A random kid referred to me as 'that lady' the other day.

For some reason it surprised me. I didn't think that I was old enough to be described as a 'lady', despite being in my 30s 😂

I am 42, and most of the members are far older than my dad! They love it when my DD comes along, they treat like another grand child.😁

IcakethereforeIam · 17/01/2023 13:37

Getting 'ma'am'd or 'madam'd. I know they mean well.

I bought a joules raincoat, then noticed all the women wearing similar styles. I'm kinda happy that my youngest likes to borrow it.

EducatingArti · 17/01/2023 13:47

I am 58 and have recently succumbed to Hotter shoes ( though hopefully only styles that are slightly less grannyish) My mum has been trying to persuade me to buy them for ages. I haven't told her!!!
I have hyper mobility and realised that the stability+ hotter shoes are practically the only ones I can wear and not turn over on my ankle. ( with the resulting pelvic floor issues which we won't talk about as I am way too young for those!)

SoupDragon · 17/01/2023 09:25

Because it's clearly lighthearted

I think you have to be a certain age to argue about what is lighthearted 😁

I got my first 'haw missus!' at a Glasgow bus stop a few years ago and, in spite of being 39 at the time, looked over my shoulder for the missus to whom the young gentleman was referring, only to realise that he did, in fact, mean me.

That was a sobering moment. 😄

Seriously, weight training is the business for HM. I haven't had a stupid injury for ages now.

What song was it?

Penny Lane, so not one of their more well known ones apparently? I'm grateful it's also one of the easier Beatles tracks to learn, and the women I sit with gave me a Beatlesmania history lesson at the same time, then asked if I knew a few others (Blackbird and Here Comes The Sun were two I did know that were asked about)
