I am sure this has probably be done before but I was listening to Caroline Hirons saying she did not wear cardigans as she felt it was something her Grandma wore. Though I do not agree I was just looking up future cruises and decided Saga not for me . It would be for older people (I am 63!!). I just imagine loads of white cauliflower hairstyles. I know it is ageist and unreasonable (I know they have jeople going from 55 years).what are you too young for????

@FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall yes! I asked my mum when she would go grey and have a short cut or perm (she's only 63, so not old) and she said never! I also told her we should get a shopping trolley bag so we could carry more stuff easily at the shops (she's disabled and has finally starting using a walking stick) and she said she wouldnt be seen in public with me! I'm 33. I'm gonna get a massive perm I reckon.

My MIL also thinks I'm strange because I love lavender and apparently it's an old lady smell. I think of it as classic 😂 (she's nearly 68). she's got purple hair and is in every group going since she retired. Think she walked the Brecon beacons last month, she's in art competitions, does environment survey's etc. She was out every night last week, she really does make me feel old. I told her that i told someone she was a naturist instead of a naturalist by mistake. That'll learn her! 😂

Why does it even have to be lighthearted.

Because it's clearly lighthearted

Goldenbear · 17/01/2023 09:34

I was at my DH's close relative's 40th party, they are a musician and well known musicians whose albums I bought in my teens where there- next to me at the bar was a singer that had the same look as he did in the 90's - particularly hairstyle and I was at first a bit star struck then thought, 'goodness he looks old now', completely forgetting that I had correspondingly aged and I felt too young to have had them as a poster on my wall! He was probably 8 years older than me but still 😏

Friends....or you do enjoy all these things and are of the age where you're permanently offended?

Well ageism and sizeism seem to be the two forms of discrimination that are still widely tolerated in society, and I think it's a bit shit to be honest, so yeah I'll call that out when I see it.

You can be dismissive with the cool kids if you feel that need, carry on.

That's us told then.
I don't see any ageism here, and I'm old, some on this thread are even older!
Happy to be called a cool kid though, it's made my day. Cheers 😁

itssquidstella · 17/01/2023 09:50

My 97 year old grandma moans the old ladies in her care home. She definitely doesn't see herself as one of them 😁

itssquidstella · 17/01/2023 09:50

*moans about

And yet you keep coming back to it. If you want to start your day offended by nothing then please, you crack on.

During covid my neighbour was driving 'the old folk' to their vaccinations

He was 95

I interpret it as we are all (lightheartedly) trying to persuade ourselves we are are not as old as we actually are?

ClaryFairchild · 17/01/2023 06:23

OMG - thanks for making me feel old in one fell swoop.....😢

I was just thinking, thanks for that reminder of my age (born nine years after WW2.).

My oncologist suggested one of those pill sorter thingies - the ones you put your pills in so you take the right ones every day. Told her, no thanks, they're for old people.

lightand · 17/01/2023 10:23

Glad the thread hasnt been zapped.
How ludicrous that would have been.

Of course ageism exists. But cant see the correlation personally, between that and people talking about how old or young they feel.

I think it was the reference to 'cauliflower perms' - last seen in the 70s as far as I can recall. Alhough in fairness, whenever I'm with contemporaries, I seem to be the only one not embracing the grey. (Or the expensive grey/silver highlights, if that's what they are).

We're all discussing our own experiences of growing older, as we all do (well, the lucky ones, anyway). We aren't mocking or showing hatred towards older people - we ARE (becoming) those older people! We must all be being self-ist!!

mamabear715 · 17/01/2023 11:17

Isn't old age 10-20 yrs older than our current age? Always?

Cakeyface123 · 17/01/2023 11:25

Bigoldmachine · 16/01/2023 21:35

I “had a fall” earlier, rather than just fell over! I’m not 40 yet!!

Laughed out loud! 😂 hope you’re ok after your fall

VitaminX · 17/01/2023 11:29

My daughter's first snow boots were Ecco and she was only 1! Both my 5 year old son and I have snow boots from Ecco as our current pairs. I've got Ecco trainers and sandals as well. It's a brilliant quality brand. I think it's Danish and doesn't have any old people associations in the Nordic countries.

Countdown is a student classic as well, or at least it was in my day. I suppose you do have to be at a certain stage of life to be watching TV at that time of day.

AffIt · 17/01/2023 11:30

I have not just one, but four pairs of slippers, which are assigned different jobs:

Bathroom / post shower slippers (towelling mules)
Soft-soled ballerina pumps for general pottering
Fluffy boots for keeping my feet cosy when WfH
Hard-soled moccasins for taking the bins out etc

My sister mocks me, but having a rigid system means I always have warm feet and clean floors.

I'm 43. I thought I had a few good years left in me yet, but I think those died the day I bought the moccasins.

MeinKraft · 17/01/2023 11:31

Thermal vests. I'm freezing in winter and some thermals would really solve that problem. But I'm too young!! (I am almost 40)

MeinKraft · 17/01/2023 11:40

This thread is making me remember that line in Bridget Jones Diary when Bridget is panicking about looking older and expects to look in the mirror one day and find she's suddenly sporting a perm and a crinoline dress Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2023 11:42

Of course! Look at the '50 isn't middle-aged, is it?!' threads that pop up on MN regularly. People will come on saying that childhood is aged 0-35, young adulthood is 36-65, 66-95 is middle-aged and 96+ is beginning to approach becoming elderly Grin

Redcrayons · 17/01/2023 11:42

Im a life long cardigan lover so I’m not too old for that.

A few weeks ago i tripped and fell over. Somebody describes it as ‘having a fall’ and I had to correct them. I’m way too young to be having falls. I just fell over. There’s a big difference.

Thermals have now rebranded. They’re base layers.

thermal vests - old
base layers - young

buy the base layers.

Ah but I want to know if @Bigoldmachine had a 'bit of a fall' because that would be telling 😅

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2023 11:46

There are definitely four distinct age-stages relating to stairs:

  1. Running up and down constantly, just for fun;
  2. Freely going up and downstairs whenever necessary;
  3. Deliberately allowing things to congregate near the top or bottom to strictly minimise the amount of trips needed per day;
  4. Ordering stuff that you already own from Amazon Prime - because your existing one is upstairs and you are not!
