I am sure this has probably be done before but I was listening to Caroline Hirons saying she did not wear cardigans as she felt it was something her Grandma wore. Though I do not agree I was just looking up future cruises and decided Saga not for me . It would be for older people (I am 63!!). I just imagine loads of white cauliflower hairstyles. I know it is ageist and unreasonable (I know they have jeople going from 55 years).what are you too young for????

I joined a local quilting group. The average age of the others there must have been 80 something.

Me too! I must have been 20 years younger than most of them and so didn’t have much in common as in a different stage of life. Enjoyed quilting though.

speakout · 17/01/2023 07:01

Over 50 exercise classes.
I am 60, exercise classes for seniors are far too easy.

Coffeecreme · 17/01/2023 07:03

i used to say listening to Terry Wogan, and i never relented

now its the U3A, they invited me at one point, i just looked at them thinking, how old do i look?

I struggle with this whole subject. I am about the same age as the OP.
I am finding it is a funny age to be.
It doesnt help that I dont know that many people around 70. So I dont know what to expect. I know plenty of people from 80 onwards, and the ages younger than me.

The few people around the 70 mark - well one dresses from top shop! The other one I know well has got to the "dont drive at night" stage.
I am confused!

KnackeredBack · 17/01/2023 07:07

A lady I knew used to volunteer at age concern to help the 'old dears' (her words)....she was 93.

Coffeecreme · 17/01/2023 07:18

my dm and my aunt went on a trip, which my aunt was unsure about as it was full of old ladies Wink they were in their late 70s or early 80s then

Supersimkin2 · 17/01/2023 07:24

@snowlolo reported the thread

I’m too pompous to have an age. Humour is not allowed, especially if I can attack women or old people cos they’ve made a joke.

My dad used to drive my grandad - his FIL - to a luncheon, and was extremely offended to be asked if he was joining them by the volunteer. He's 81, my Grandad was 90, and the luncheon was for old folk 😅

I accidentally went on a Warner weekend in my 20's. The receptionist actually gasped when I checked in.

I've reported this thread because although the spirit of it is lighthearted there are some very ageist stereotypes here.
It is totally reinforcing these as things that only old people could/ should enjoy:

Crochet
Cruises
Quilting
Cardigans
Slippers
M&S
Choirs
... etc.

I mean aren't we as a society past that? I have friends in their 20's who love all of the above.

Friends....or you do enjoy all these things and are of the age where you're permanently offended?

SoupDragon · 17/01/2023 07:49

Some people are clearly lacking a sense of humour and lightheartedness 😂😂

Thankweyou · 17/01/2023 08:08

Mid 50s here with a judgy, style conscious 12 year old DD.

Nipped in a M&S cafe for a scone and coffee with her and she mentioned that I looked like all the other women there - bobbed hair with blonde highlights and lots were wearing denim jackets. She was right.

I'm not old enough for a blond bob and denim jacket 😂

That's pretty much the whole point of this thread....

StarlightLady · 17/01/2023 08:26

I'm in my 40s and too young for big white knickers. 😀

Fizbosshoes · 17/01/2023 08:32

I got slightly unreasonably enthusiastic about a new Aldi opening near me. I used it as a warning to my teens, this is the sort of the thing that counts as mildly exciting when you're middle aged!🤣🤣🤣 (although I'm always a bit miffed when they refer to me as middle aged!)

WI - a friend suggested we join but I feel like I'm way too young to even consider it (I'm 48)

About a third of members at my local group are younger than me and I'm 52,one is 21.

I always thought when I was young when mum and nan watched things like antiques roadshow that it was only for old people and so boring! I love it 😆 and go antique shopping too! But deffo not old enough for it 🫣

i was in a pub where a band was playing a Led Zeppelin number and I was surprised at how many old people knew the words.

Then I realised I was one of them! Sad

Totally relate!😆

Why does it even have to be lighthearted.

About a third of members at my local group are younger than me and I'm 52,one is 21.

They vary hugely.

I went to one. Was expecting to be the youngest and I was around the middle in age.
Not that I stayed.

lightand · 17/01/2023 08:54

I am too young to be called Grannie. So I go by any other name but.
Even though I am a grannie and have been for a while.

The next generation up is still alive, just about all of them, so being called a grannie just doesnt seem right, as they are the true grannies and grandpas.

Foxywood · 17/01/2023 08:54

The reason choirs / crochet groups etc are all old people is because younger women work full time and there is no time for hobbies. It's not that they are boriing easy things for the decrepit and aged to while away their years.
They are rewarding often requiring a good deal of skill, and fun and the oldies have the time. Why wouldn't you do these things (as well as volunteering and helping with DGCs).

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 17/01/2023 09:01

I'm old enough for tweed at 62, and so is son-out-law at 26.
I'll never be old enough for Radio 2.

WhatHoJeeves · 17/01/2023 09:09

This thread is lovely and warm and has made me chuckle happily - despite the po-faced grumbling. I'm definitely too young or too old, not sure which, to be so humourless.

I'm not old enough to have switched from being the youngest in my workplace to one of the oldest. How, just how?

And also, I'm never going to be old enough for Warner's! Makes my blood run cold.
