I'm 43. I stopped dying it for about six months last year because I was sick of the constant cycle. I really am very very grey and have been for years. Everyone was quite honest about how awful I looked. I gave up on New Years Eve and I'm back on the boxes.

BarryK3nt · 16/01/2023 10:14

Never

AmandaHoldensLips · 16/01/2023 10:15

I'm going for it! Bloody hate going to the hairdresser and the colouring was SO expensive.

At 42 in 2020. My hairdresser and DH love it. Eldest DS is not keen. I'm sure it does age me a little bit I see it as a bit fuck the patriarchy and I like it

barbrahunter · 16/01/2023 10:16

Another never. I have never ever seen anyone look better with grey hair.

Libre2 · 16/01/2023 10:17

35, (14 years ago) when I had my first child and became allergic to all hair dye. Had it cut short. It’s fine. I mean it’s grey, but it’s fine. And cheaper.

GoldenCagedBird · 16/01/2023 10:17

I’ll probably use my grey years to go platinum blonde as my hair has always been too dark to maintain this colour.

Oneborneverydecade · 16/01/2023 10:18

Should add I'm not very grey, except around my hairline. The rest is salt and pepper. My curly hair is beyond shoulder length and the greys and full length

notacooldad · 16/01/2023 10:19

I'm nearly 58 and no grey hairs yet. Well not on my head at least. I have a couole wiry ones in my eyebrows that drive me nuts though.

I’ve seen it look great when people have gone to their hairdresser, had the dark bits bleached and a brilliant silver toner put on top. Or a pinky or lavender wash.

But most of the people I have met who have ‘gone grey’ are just letting it grow out, patches of brown, patches of white. If I were them I would just go get it dyed silver and let it grow out from there? The in between stage isn’t flattering.

This is amazing! I had my first single greys at 37!

Slowgrowingelm · 16/01/2023 10:24

In my 60’s probably. I started going grey in my late teens. I have very dark hair and I am probably about 90% grey.

All my peers who have gone grey (late 40’s) look much older, in my opinion. I really think that only a very small number of people can go grey without looking a lot older than they are. No way am I going there just yet.
I am adding highlights bit by bit, so the roots are not so obvious. I’m taking the highlights to a very light blonde and I’ve had lots of compliments which has been comforting!

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 16/01/2023 10:24

Never. I have a silver streak I've spent the last 30 years trying to cover though (I'm 43).

StarInTheHeavens · 16/01/2023 10:25

I've only just re-dyed my hair after leaving it for ages. I actually think I suit the silvery colour that came out but I'm too young to embrace it just yet. (52). I shall definitely ditch the boxes in the future though. I shall embrace my inner Honor Blackman... Grin

GracePooleslaugh · 16/01/2023 10:26

Have never dyed it, have quite a bit now. I quite like it

ClarissaParry · 16/01/2023 10:27

I'm teetering on the edge of dyeing it silver, I'm going grey naturally at age 41, and have never regularly dyed my hair, but this in between phase of silver temples is beginning to irritate me.

I don't care if other people think grey looks good or bad, though.

CrotchetyQuaver · 16/01/2023 10:30

Did it fairly early 40's, just had to have a really short haircut to achieve that. Decided I wasn't ready for that and went back to having it coloured. Second attempt at going grey happened in 2018, and I've stuck with it this time, it's a much better colour this time round.

My3cents1 · 16/01/2023 10:30

I started going grey at 14! 5 years ago i just said sod it and grew all the dye out. I like it so that’s all that matters.

CrystalTits · 16/01/2023 10:30

Went from dyed brunette to natural white/grey in one appointment, aged 46. I get compliments regularly, I don't give a shit about whether anyone else thinks it ages me - I'm proud of my age - although I'm often surprised by just how much it triggers other people's insecurity about their own ageing process.

Whitney168 · 16/01/2023 10:34

Had T-section highlights just before 50th birthday and then grew it out. Am fortunate that it is a very clear silver (although some darker bits underneath at the back, but nobody sees that really).

I get loads of compliments on it - people seem to assume I've dyed it - but frankly I'm too lazy and tight to keep dyeing my fast-growing hair which is 100% grey on the top every 2 weeks, so wouldn't make much difference if I didn't really. 😂

Hair is in great condition, and looking back at photos of just before I stopped dyeing it, the colour I would prefer to still be (dark reddish brown) was definitely not suiting my skin tone any more, and I would much rather be grey than blonde.

Another never. I have never ever seen anyone look better with grey hair.

My natural hair colour might have looked better but it never looked decent dyed.
Put it this way, I've got many more compliments on the colour of my hair now (silver not yet white) than I ever did when it was dyed

Frith2013 · 16/01/2023 10:36

I've never fought it.

Everyone has always presumed I dye my hair (it's black), so now they know that I don't!

My3cents1 · 16/01/2023 10:36

Sorry. I was 44.

Chasingdopamine · 16/01/2023 10:36

37 I started letting it grow out. Lots of compliments!

DoorstoManual · 16/01/2023 10:36

I posted this on another thread.

I went grey at 52, post cancer, I then managed to develop breast cancer and lost my hair, I now have a funky asymmetrical haircut that I didn’t have the nerve to have in the 80’s, purple shampoo every day, is the way to go.

I feel great and I was complimented on my hair yesterday in Marks, I said thank you, better to do it at 59 than not at all.

The complimenter said let me tell you, you don’t look 59.

So in essence a sharp haircut and purple shampoo appears to be the answer.😂
