I started going grey at 14! 5 years ago i just said sod it and grew all the dye out. I like it so that’s all that matters.

That looks great!

I also mostly think grey hair makes people look older and will probably dye mine for a good while when the time comes. (Am 40 and so far only have one or two that aren't really noticeable).

Never really thought about it, but does the tone of grey differ depending on your previous hair colour? So will blonde haired people have lighter grey hair than those who had dark brown?

DoorstoManual · 16/01/2023 10:38

My paternal grandmother was fully grey by fifteen, I never stood a chance really.🤪

Should add I'm not very grey, except around my hairline. The rest is salt and pepper. My curly hair is beyond shoulder length and the greys and full length

Must be the curls! I have really curly hair and have gotten a fair few Grey hairs over the last two years, but not from the roots. I just find them sometimes the full-length of my hair (they are also a lot straiter?!). I'm 37, and no intention of dying my hair as it's another thing I don't need the hassle of!

I gave up colouring my hair in my early 50s. It doesn't suit me and it's aged me considerably. On the other hand I don't miss the ongoing battle with my grey roots showing and I'm now completely invisible to men. The latter has been an unexpected source of happiness to be honest.

Wfhandbored · 16/01/2023 10:41

I'm 30 and started going grey a couple of years ago and since having a baby it's just increased in momentum. So much so that it was dye jobs every 6 weeks to keep up as I'm dark. I'm in the process of trying to grow it out. I have 20 inch tape black hair extensions and my hair around the grey is black. To speed the process along I am getting some different extensions fitted which will tie in the growing out hair. Everyone's comments around people not looking good with the grey make me worry but I'm trying to embrace it and make it work for me!

I'm 39 and haven't dyed my hair for about 8 years now. Starting to notice more greys in the last year or so and no plans to dye. I have a stupidly young face so I'm enjoying finally having something that makes me look like an adult. 🤣

MrsClatterbuck · 16/01/2023 10:45

I stopped colouring my hair at 59. It is so freeing and a lot cheaper. My hair colour is a silvery white and I love it. I use the John Frieda shampoo for grey hair. Have a box of the plantur shampoo for silver hair which I may try next. Would love a bit of lavender in my hair so may try that as well but would want it to wash out easily.

Rachaelrachael · 16/01/2023 10:49

I got my 1st grey hair at 15 and by the time I was 17 I needed to colour my hair to hide them. Almost 40 now and I've given up trying to have dark hair, so gone for a platinum blonde! Sad that I'll never be a brunette again, but loving the change. And don't think I'll ever go full grey!

ShrinesofGaiety · 16/01/2023 10:49

My hair is weird in that I’m early 60s, hardly any greys that show but my natural hair colour is now far too dark for my skin tone at this age so I can’t see me ever stopping having it coloured a much nicer warmer colour

Your hair is beautiful!

I stopped dyeing in 2020 when I was 41. I did a buzz cut.
Now it's mid back length with just a smattering of grey, mainly at the temples.
I love not having to deal with hairdressers and roots.

ThirtyThreeTrees · 16/01/2023 10:57

Late 30s, no grey etc but my natural colour is definitely getting lighter over the last 3 years.

Hanschenklein · 16/01/2023 10:57

I’m mid 50s. Went grey in first lock down, now completely so. Had hair cut in choppy bob with blunt fringe and loads of people have told me it suits me. I quite like it too as it’s quite bright and shiny, much better condition.

SedentaryCat · 16/01/2023 10:57

I stopped dyeing it at 50. Had some highights put in to soften the regrowth line and grew it out from there.

A couple of years on it's now a really nice colour. A mix of white and darker highlights - quite dark still if you lift my hair at the nape of my neck (according to my hairdresser!). I use a purple shampoo to whiten the white bits.

To be fair it's in the best condition it has ever been, thick, glossy and more manageable than it ever has been. Wished I'd done it sooner.

CMOTDibbler · 16/01/2023 11:01

38 - I'd had to use permanent dyes for 10 years, and demi dyes for 7 before that to cover my grey and was fed up of it. 50 now and I'm pretty much all white and get loads of compliments

GenuinelyDone · 16/01/2023 11:03

My epiphany was the year I turned 40. I was getting really stressed by how quickly the greys were showing through and absolutely hated the root regrowth so decided to just stop dying it. Then it wasn't happening to me, I was making it happen. Big difference.

My MIL was and still is aghast at my doing this, she thinks I'm too young to "give up".

However I have zero regrets, my natural colour actually suits my skin tone much better and the streaky way my grey is coming through looks good.

The only thing I have noticed is that grey is not forgiving on frizzy hair so I need to make sure I've done some basic styling (hairdryer is enough) so that it looks tidy.

IHeartGeneHunt · 16/01/2023 11:04
  1. Been pure white under the dye since 22. I really can't be bothered with it any more, and what other people think of me bothers me even less, so now I'm 40 it's back to white.
unsync · 16/01/2023 11:04

54 - Love my grey hair, it's fab and I get compliments.

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/01/2023 11:04

I have a severe hair dye allergy and my brunette hair is going very grey now. I use Bleach London "Fade to Grey" shampoo and conditioner which gives it a charcoal sheen, it's a toning shampoo. I wish I could use the toner that is part of the same product but unfortunately I reacted to that too.

It amazes me that in this day and age there are zero products out there for people like me, with the exception of Henna cream. I do use that occasionally as there are a huge range of colours available now in the cream formulations but it is a massive faff and needs to be left on for a long time. It also doesn't 100% cover grey. I imagine in the next few years I'll just give up. I've tried highlights and they don't suit me or my skin tone. I've followed several "silver sisters" on instagram, fairly young women who have gone grey early and they all look amazing. I think how you take care of your silver males all the difference, especially in terms of good quality purple shampoo. Also it requires a change of makeup and lipstick colours.

I would happily dye my hair otherwise, it's a source of enormous frustration!

Rebel2023 · 16/01/2023 11:05

No greys yet - I'm a redhead so not sure what colour I will go! It's faded a lot since I was younger but I haven't spotted any grey hair

Scarecrowrowboat · 16/01/2023 11:08

I would never dye it to get rid of grey. I honestly don't see the point. I'm interested to see how I look when it takes over.

Kennykenkencat · 16/01/2023 11:09

I haven’t died my hair for 15 years.
Allergic to all hair dyes.

It is still brown but the streaks of grey look awful
mine has never just all grown through as grey

I am very conscious that I look awful and it has impinged on my going out
I wish I could use hair dye
I would never actively go grey

thewinterwitch · 16/01/2023 11:09

Perhaps at some point after death?

I like white hair, so if it goes white that will be fine.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 16/01/2023 11:10

Mid 50s redhead, so no grey but some of it is going blonde!

Buzzinwithbez · 16/01/2023 11:10

I'm 45 and have a few strands of grey which I love. I want to go grey all at once because I think the half and half phase is tricky.
My friend found a fabulous hairdresser though and has managed to keep her lovely grey while lightening the rest enough to blend in more, so that's where I'll be heading. I don't want to hide the grey.
My grandmother went a beautiful colour so I'm hoping I take after her

wonkylegs · 16/01/2023 11:11

I'm 44 and no grey hairs yet.
I'm a natural blonde so I suspect that they won't be that obvious even when I do get them.
My mum started going grey in her 30s but she had black hair. My dad had mousey brown hair that went white grey when he was in his 60's.
