Whatever age my hair goes grey by itself. Based on my family history, probably around age 55

megletthesecond · 16/01/2023 17:25

I'm 48 and will never fight it. I have some silvery streaks that I'm fond of. I'd rather put my time and energy into healthy food and exercise as I get older.

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 16/01/2023 17:34

My auntie is 73 she still dyes her hair she looks about 55
Other aunt is 67 no hair dye looks about 80!!!!
I'll ALWAYS dye my hair not a chance will I stop 🛑

I would wager that the vast majority of this impression will be based on the clothes they wear and their general attitudes.

But then, I would say that. I have grey hair. 😆

I think it’s sad how so many women are worried about whether they look older and what others think of them. I love seeing women with grey hair who just don’t give a s*.

Why? It's natural to want to look younger, as on average youthful appearance is associated with not only increased longevity, but a healthier old age. And while dye is obviously artificial, so having dyed brown/blonde/red hair isn't a natural sign of increaded likelihood of living a long healthy life, placebo effects are powerful.

Cocolapew · 16/01/2023 17:44

I've no idea when I started to go grey but I'd say in my early 30s, my mums side all went grey very early. Her mum was pure white by 21.
I stopped dyeing it in my late 40's. I'm 54 now and love my hair, I get complements all the time, I have a sneaking suspicion that most people think I dye it though.
I've grew it to past my chin now and think I'll aim for nearly shoulder length.
This is an older photo, it's got more silver/white since then.

Cocolapew your hair is beautiful.

Cocolapew · 16/01/2023 17:46

Thank you 🙂

I agree that grey hair is just not flattering and simply immediately age most people.

If people don't mind that, then fair enough but the majority of women I think do look better with colour in their hair.

Harissaontoast · 16/01/2023 17:50

When I was 35. I'm nearly 42. It's a very cool grey/blonde colour. People have stopped me in the street to ask where I got it done and the hairdresser said I wasn't to touch it. My mum's side go grey young.

I have no problems at all with looking my age. What a privilege to get older! I don't care at all what people think.

The beauty industry is a very powerful thing. I won't give them that much time or money.

slamwich · 16/01/2023 17:59

Thank you @CandleCandleCandle She was a brilliant lady

GinIronic · 16/01/2023 18:00

I went gradually silver - not grey - when I stopped using colour on my hair in my sixties. I don't care what other people think - I'm still fabulous.

Iateallthechips · 16/01/2023 18:01

Never.

I am going into the ground with dyed hair.

I’m 43 and totally grey under the dye.

thenotsoeviltwin · 16/01/2023 18:08

At 40 in 2019. I've been grey since 15/16 and have a Mallen streak.
Was just sick of constantly dying it brown. It took a good year to grow out, that wasn't pretty but now it's naturally grey with brown lowlights and white highlights!! 😂

My friends were horrified but have come around and like it now. One friend has also gone silver too as she liked mine.
I still get comments that it ages me etc etc but I am aging! So embrace it!
If you can get thru the growing out phase you'll never look back!

AliceMcK · 16/01/2023 18:09

Like any hair colour I think it fully depends if you will suite being grey. I also think how it is done is also important.

My SIL has been growing out her grey for years, she had jet black hair, quite frankly it looks bloody awful and she looks 20 years older than what she is. Her mum who she looks a lot alike suits it, but she has short hair, obviously is 20 years older and did it by stripping the colour out so it didn’t grow out in patches.

My niece dyed her hair grey, it looked bloody awful, she looks like me, most people think she’s my DD. Her complexion dose not suite grey hair like me and my grandmother and other women in our family, it’s far better to stay blonde where the grey is easier to blend and disguise. The men on the other hand all look fantastic with grey hair.

I think you still need to take care of naturally grey hair to make sure it dosnt look wirery and draining.

Phillipa12 · 16/01/2023 18:09

Im 47 and stopped dyeing my hair 4 years ago. It's 75% grey and it's never been so healthy and I've never had so many compliments. I will never go back to dyeing it.

lipstickwoman · 16/01/2023 18:14

Stopped spending several hours and lots of cash having colours every 6 weeks about 4 years ago.

I have lots of grey, don't give a toss and will go greyer or whiter or whatever comes

I have never seen an older woman with box dyed hair look that good, although expensive foils etc can

I'm late 50s

notprincehamlet · 16/01/2023 18:24

Started going grey in my teens/early twenties. I've tried going grey - I look like John Major's Spitting Image puppet. They can prise my root regrowth brush from my cold dead fingers.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/01/2023 18:36

But most of the people I have met who have ‘gone grey’ are just letting it grow out, patches of brown, patches of white. If I were them I would just go get it dyed silver and let it grow out from there? The in between stage isn’t flattering.

But the in-between stage lasts AGES!

I tried in lockdown 2020 and lasted until I had about 5 inches of growth. Some of it is a lovely pure white, which is what my Mum's is. Some is STILL brown and some is grey. And that's after going grey for the last 8 years.

I'd already gone to a blonde 5 years ago when I got fed up of covering the roots and seeing the regrowth. I am sensitive to hair dye so can only have foils to bleach it blonde. It means I get a lot more time of regrowth out before it is noticeable. I'm 48.

What about those of us who want to do things for ourselves

I have never given a shit what others think but I want to look good for myself.

Kennykenkencat · 16/01/2023 18:58

Also not everyone goes from normal hair colour and then suddenly it all starts to come through as grey over night
I have grey hair but it is mingled in with brown and black and mousy blond and sometimes the grey strands turn back to dark hair so i get these vertical stripes like a bad dye job. It just looks awful

Lovegossip · 16/01/2023 18:58

I started getting grey hair in my early 30s never bothered me so I never attempted to dye it, it's just hair

OfCourseChangs · 16/01/2023 18:59

I became allergic go hair dye during peri menopause so was grey at 50. I bought a very decent wig while it was growing out.

Spanielsarepainless · 16/01/2023 19:15

I had a few silver threads by 14. But I haven't really gone grey, just an ashy blonde from brunette.
