When do you, if ever, drink champagne?

I had a milestone birthday recently and moved house last week. For both of these I have been given a fair few bottles of champagne - ranging from Mumm to Veuve Cliquot/Laurent Perrier. I don't mind champagne, and regularly drink Prosecco at home, but it feels strangely indulgent to drink champagne on a random Saturday night. Yes, I could save it for special occasions but what would they be?

So yes - my question is, if you have champagne in your house, when would you drink it?

I love champagne and Laldi have bottles for about £13 so we have fairly regularly.

ReamsOfCheese · 14/01/2023 19:33

My only criteria are a) I don't have to drive anywhere and b) I have a bottle of ice-cold champagne to hand.
Nice things are made to be enjoyed.

Blueberrycreampie · 14/01/2023 19:34

My answer is not often enough. It would be every day if I could. But maybe it wouldn't feel special then. I don't like Moet - tried it several times and it tastes odd to me, so would like your recommendations for reasonably priced nv.

Never. I don't like it, it's too dry for me. I have a sweet tooth so when it comes to alcohol I like fruit ciders or a cocktail.

Btw you find champagne dry because you're used to sweetened Prosecco.

Champagne isn’t necessarily dry. That’s just the English preference. The French often drink their champagne sweeter than us. My French MIL insists they send us English the brut and keep the more refined stuff at home. At family events in France we have demi-sec, sometimes doux. At home in England, I prefer English sparkling wine, which is a bit less brut, but not quite demi-sec. It can give the best champagne a run for its money.

I'm drinking pink champagne tonight... I could die tomorrow & it would be wasted on DD's if they inherited it they think pink gin is the height of class & sophistication

There is nothing more empowering than cracking open a bottle for no reason, we've been known to celebrate surviving a Tuesday

Lol 😂

LookItsMeAgain · 14/01/2023 19:40

This is a bit like buying nice clothes and leaving them hanging in the wardrobe from one end of the year to the next. Drink your champagne whenever the mood takes you, that's when I'd drink champagne 🥂🥂
Chin chin!

Once every couple of years for me. Last time was when I went away for my 40th. This thread reminds me I should drink it more often, as I do really love it. I’m not a fan of Prosecco as I find it too sharp.

I consider champagne to be really decadent, but maybe I need to get over that.

Ihaveawonderfulpartner · 14/01/2023 19:44

Ooh. We love champagne 🍾 in our house and it's often a Saturday night treat. I have to say that's usually the Aldi one which is really lovely. We do have a champagne shelf with gorgeous brands on there and drink those on more special occasions like birthdays etc and replace them with like for like as it doesn't last. Love a bottle of fizz 🥂

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 14/01/2023 19:44

Whenever i fancy,usually most weekends.

unclebuck · 14/01/2023 19:45

I am inclined to outrageously open bottles randomly in the style of Patsy Stone. "What are we celebrating darling"
I'm not rich, I just fucking love pretending I am

Tulipomania · 14/01/2023 19:46

Christmas, Birthdays and other celebrations e.g. kids exam results
When we have certain friends round for dinner

Atethehalloweenchocs · 14/01/2023 19:49

I used to live near vineyards that made it and would drink it just whenever. Prefer it to prosecco.

ClaireEclair · 14/01/2023 19:50

I drink it all the time. I have a bottle chilling in the fridge right now. But I drink cheaper champagne, not Moët (I hate it) or anything like that. My favourite is Sainsbury’s own and M&S Delacourt champagne. It’s way better than any of the expensive brands.

MissMarplesbag · 14/01/2023 19:53

Cremant is meant to be an alternative to champagne as it isade in a similar way to champagne.

thecatsthecats · 14/01/2023 19:58

I'm not fussed about champagne, but it's easy enough to spend £50 on a few cocktails if drinking out, so why worry about spending £30 on a bottle to enjoy at home?

mathanxiety · 14/01/2023 20:02

New Year's Eve

Any celebration like university graduation

DorisParchment · 14/01/2023 20:03

When I fancy some. Please don’t keep it for special occasions. My Mum kept a load that she was given for a milestone birthday and it all went off.

Moorlander · 14/01/2023 20:04

We have a lovely friend who rocks up to any event with a bottle of champagne and it never fails to elevate the occasion.Makes everything feel special. My favourite is when he pops a bottle in his rucksack to be opened at the top of a hill on a walk or brings one along on a camping weekend. We have started to take a leaf out of his book and drink it as a more regular thing.

Mum2jenny · 14/01/2023 20:06

When we fancied it, maybe after a crap day at work or after we’ve had an unexpected payment from our shares….(£10 or more)

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 14/01/2023 20:08

If I have a bottle and fancy it.

At the risk of sounding ‘live, life, love’ (which I fucking hate), imagine dying and leaving decent fizz in the fridge (or rather, flat by the fridge - it should only go in for 20 mins or so)?

Pop the fizz OP!

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 14/01/2023 20:10

(Sainsbury’s TTD cremant is delicious)

CUDet · 14/01/2023 20:15

As often as possible.

schoolworries22 · 14/01/2023 20:17

Whenever there is some in the fridge and we feel like drinking it.
