When do you, if ever, drink champagne?

I had a milestone birthday recently and moved house last week. For both of these I have been given a fair few bottles of champagne - ranging from Mumm to Veuve Cliquot/Laurent Perrier. I don't mind champagne, and regularly drink Prosecco at home, but it feels strangely indulgent to drink champagne on a random Saturday night. Yes, I could save it for special occasions but what would they be?

So yes - my question is, if you have champagne in your house, when would you drink it?

We have it probably at least once a week….. my fave is the LP rose, but we have cheaper bottles if we aren’t celebrating / surviving! Lol!

Splittends · 14/01/2023 20:21

There was a poster on here once whose parents opened a bottle of champagne every Sunday evening. I think about that a lot.

Anytime! The only drink that doesn’t give me a hangover

I didn't realise it goes off Shock ... have put a bottle in the fridge for tomorrow night ... agree with others though that Cremant is lovely .. we had six bottles over Christmas, think there might be one left ...

On the very rare occasion we get given Champagne we drink it soon after, for no reason.

My in-laws have about 10 bottles of champagne they've been given over the years. They're saving it for a special occasion. Since I have met my husband there have been numerous milestone birthdays (we've been together 20 years), retirements, a wedding, 4 graduations, 2 babies and none of these occasional are worthy of the champagne.

Do they realise it goes off?

I get bought it quite a lot because my friends know how much I love it. I drink it for Christmas, my birthday, etc but I lost my family when I was young so I always open a bottle when it’s my mum and dad and brother’s birthdays, and on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and my parent’s anniversary. Cheers me up if I’m feeling mopey.

That's a really lovely thing to do. 💐

My husband and I have Champagne Tuesday every week.

Whenever I fancy it 😳🤣

I've been known to buy myself a bottle of champagne and drink it, purely because I want to. I'll sit in my pj's binge watching Netflix drinking champagne 🤣

Now that’s inspiration!

We usually save for birthdays, Christmas & New Year but after reading some of the posts think I’ll treat myself more often.

Highonpower · 14/01/2023 20:34

I'm not too fond of Champagne, dh is keener - one glass is plenty for me and he is unlikely to want to drink more than two..so when? is probably when we have company so the bottle gets drained. We'd be more likely to invest and enjoy a good red and I suffer no guilt from enjoying a good one on a Wednesday - if the need takes me.
Most of the champagne will have been gifted to us - I think it's overpriced - for my preferences anyway.

There is nothing more empowering than cracking open a bottle for no reason, we've been known to celebrate surviving a Tuesday

My kind of people!

wheresmyshoe · 14/01/2023 20:35

I love Champagne and drink it just because although it always feels like a treat. The champagne you have been given will be brilliant now and within the next couple of years. You might find yourself developing a taste for it over prosecco.

blackpearwhitelilies · 14/01/2023 20:37

I have a lovely Irish friend who insists upon the restorative powers of champagne. When I had my children she sent me champagne and told me I was to have a small glass every evening before bed as a tonic until I felt better again. It applies to any illness or occasion when one is feeling under par, I think.

As often as possible.

This!

Laurent Perrier is my favourite (pink, NV and demi-sec, love them all) for really special occasions we treat ourselves to Ruinart Rose. Currently have some English sparkling wine from Ashling Park which is the best English one in my opinion (was in the trade so have tried a fair few). I tend to drink them in accordance with the biodynamic calendar as they taste best on certain days!

Samsonsmum · 14/01/2023 20:39

If I am ever lucky enough to have any

justanothermummma · 14/01/2023 20:40

Drink it on special occasions yes! Get some Chambord too, makes it lovely

pinkfondu · 14/01/2023 20:53

My advice is drink when you feel like it, especially on a random day, maybe with a takeaway and just because. Otherwise it'll be knocking around for years if you do t. It was bought for an occasion already you don't need to wait for another!

strawbfield · 14/01/2023 20:54

When having a nice dinner?

Friends over?

TheWitchCirce · 14/01/2023 20:57

Whenever I have friends round.

IntentionalError · 14/01/2023 20:57

Christmas & birthdays, obviously, and we have been known to treat ourselves to a bottle of champagne with fish & chips on a Friday night. The takeaway costs almost as much as the champagne these days!

yogatoga · 14/01/2023 21:00

“I drink Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it―unless I’m thirsty.”
― Lily Bollinger, (1899-1977), Bollinger Champagne

LexMitior · 14/01/2023 21:07

Whenever I choose. If it's NV, it's only good for a couple of years really so any company that enjoys it is the best time to drink it. So find an excuse.

Light on the calories too - better than most wines in that regard and peps you up.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 14/01/2023 21:09

When we are with friends, my DH won't drink more than a glass so if it's just us two it goes to waste. If we have friends it always goes down super quickly!!

NameOchangeO1 · 14/01/2023 21:14

DH and I used to have champagne every Friday night.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/01/2023 21:15

Any celebration, if we have any - but I prefer it as Buck’s Fizz, with fresh orange juice.
Dh a Kir Royale now and then in a restaurant - champagne with cassis (blackcurrant liqueur). Often on menus in restaurants in France.

Ditto to what a pp said about cremant - just as good and cheaper - if you can find it in the U.K. We served it by the gallon at a dd’s big wedding so in Burgundy.

Twospaniels · 14/01/2023 21:16

Whenever I fancy it. Quite often drink prosecco at the weekend but if there’s a bottle of champagne I will open that. Often buy myself a nice bottle.
Don’t keep the good stuff for ‘another day’ enjoy it!
A great buy is a Le Cruset topper. I usually drink half a bottle and then put the topper on and drink the rest the next evening. I have had a bottle in the fridge for 5-6 days with the topper on and it was still perfectly fizzy
