Why on earth did Lisa Marie Presley marry MJ?

EightMonthsScared · 13/01/2023 19:48

I know this is fully none of my business but I cannot understand why she married Michael Jackson.

Most press coverage alludes to it being a marriage of convenience to distract from the child abuse allegations against Jackson. That makes sense but if that's true, what was in it for her?

I could fully understand it if she was just some nobody trying to break into modelling/acting, or a C lister trying to climb up.

It's baffling.

"What castrato voice?!"

Umm, the one he famously spoke with @Downnative The one Lisa-Marie referenced in the excerpt above that YOU just posted. "you’re fucking funny, and you have a bad mouth, and you don’t have that high voice all the time."

Jesus, MJ fans are exhausting.

That isn't a castrato voice example by any means. The Jacksons themselves all have a soft, high voice if you listen to them. There is a difference between their tone and castrato voices.

Michael was known for putting on a deep (for him) voice on phone calls. Liza Minelli, for example, told this story. But soft, high tone was his voice. Lisa talked about him doing the same thing - putting on a deeper voice.

EightMonthsScared · 14/01/2023 21:40

@DownNative of course he had a high pitched voice.

Read the interview excerpt back. He was putting on the high pitched voice.

crikey MN is a weird place

why on earth can't the OP ask a perfectly reasonable question?

Interesting thread OP. I remember at the time thinking the whole things must have been confected. it's interesting to read that at least on LM's side it seems to have been sincere.

I think, regardless of what Lisa Marie may have said, anyone who believes that MJ had sex with either of the women he was married to (or any other woman, for that matter) is a bit delusional. He had zero chemistry with any woman, from his wives to Naomi Campbell.

You can believe what you like, but there's no reason for Lisa to have lied about it so many years post-divorce.

Believe what you want. It makes no difference to the private moments Michael and Lisa shared together.

We know with Debbie Rowe it was a business arrangement as this came out during their divorce years ago. He wasn't heartbroken about that.

But he was recorded talking about how heartbroken he was about Lisa. We weren't meant to hear the recording. It was private.

I think a lot of people struggle with this aspect of his life because Michael Jackson was such a massive star, was odd and seemed like a being from another planet.

Read the interview excerpt back. He was putting on the high pitched voice.

It was the other way round as he was putting on a deeper voice. Something he was known for doing. Explains why the Jacksons had soft, high speaking voices - they certainly weren't putting that on.

When it came to singing, he preferred the higher pitch as he regarded his lower register to be his "frog voice".

The director of the You Are NOT Alone video spoke about their relationship following Lisa's passing:

MN is so puritanical these days.

I'll go self-flagellate now, massive apologies. I'll wait an appropriate amount of time before I mention the probable paedophile she married again. <thumbs up>

It's as though most on here think her family will actually be reading MN !
LOTS of pearl clutchers on here. Lots.

EightMonthsScared · 14/01/2023 22:52

@sunglassesonthetable @BernardBlacksMolluscs tell me about it! It's insane. I keep snorting at one from earlier - somebody basically telling me to stop disrespecting their favourite paedo. Fuck off with that!

@prettyrainbows i actually think that some people imagine that their favourite celebrities give a shit about their opinions. It's all so performative, like they think that Lisa Marie or Michael Jackson are reading and approving. Insane behaviour.

I'm glad that sane voices joined the thread today. I felt like I was in some sort of insane parallel universe this morning.

You'd think the sleeping in a bed with little boys would put people off but from this thread it obviously doesn't. Some people will excuse anything it seems

Zandepapier · 14/01/2023 23:24

Meh. I don't think it's wrong to discuss people just because they've died. Makes no difference.

EightMonthsScared · 14/01/2023 23:30

"You'd think the sleeping in a bed with little boys would put people off but from this thread it obviously doesn't. Some people will excuse anything it seems"

I genuinely don't get hardcore Michael Jackson fans. It's a notably unhinged fandom.

Next they'll be saying that he really loved Debbie Rowe and it wasn't some sort of weird surrogacy thing

And yet her 2003 interview with Letterman where MJ was mentioned (clip of which came up in Guardian's review of her life) she was anything but supportive.

By this time she had already made it known she was done talking about it how many times had she been hauled over the coals about it NO-ONE was letting her move on if you watch the interview look at her foot when he asks about Michael she shut down questions about him she was not a confident person struggling terribly with anxiety about to sing live for only the fourth time that night

She was talented but born too soon if she had been born when the Internet was more widely used like today she would be an Internet star from her own home hiding behind an avatar

I feel really sad for her life being like that she clung to Michael when they made public appearance she said she must have turned his hand blue she was holding it so tight I just can't imagine how scared she was

bellamountain · 15/01/2023 00:05

I think she was used in most relationships she had because she was the daughter of Elvis. Had she had a sibling (also a child of Elvis) I think her life would have been less pressurised. Didn't MJ try to buy all the Beatles back catalogue? Also Nicholas Cage was a huge Elvis fan and he also dated Lisa Marie. I feel very very sad for her.

Intrepidescape · 15/01/2023 02:13

LadyKenya · 14/01/2023 18:44

Source? Yeah, she really needed the money, what with having to work 3 jobs.Hmm

She had financial issues because of her spending. It was very well known at the time. This was before the Internet was a big thing - so I’m not bringing you “empirical evidence” of her financial status.

Don’t be that person who defends a pedo trying to hide. That’s not a good person to be.

StephanieSuperpowers · 15/01/2023 07:52

Thanks, I will!

I think L-M had put herself in an invidious position. If she admitted that she and MJ weren't married in any sense that would make sense to most people, she would also be admitting that she either agreed or allowed herself to be used to create confusion around the paedo allegations.

DuckBushCityLimit · 15/01/2023 08:57

She was a Scientologist. At the time, Jackson (and his money) would have been pretty much the ultimate big fish for the Church of Scientologists. It probably isn't completely crazy to think there might have been some motivation there from her side. And one she wouldn't admit to later.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 15/01/2023 12:33

if the Scientologist thing is right, that could explain a lot

@EightMonthsScared I find the people who lose their shit on the internet when people talk about things they don’t like so baffling. They don’t seem to be enjoying themselves and Mumsnet really isn’t compulsory. But a good 40% of all posts right now seem to be people saying ‘there’s something wrong with you for wanting to talk about this! How very dare you!’

you’ve got to wonder if they’re that controlling in real life…

EightMonthsScared · 15/01/2023 12:34

"Don’t be that person who defends a pedo trying to hide. That’s not a good person to be."

The amount of people desperate to prove to everybody else that Jackson was a red blooded man who loved women (and who was just deeply misunderstood) is staggering. I will never understand it.

That person yesterday who said he was handsome and I was being rude by saying otherwise. Insane!

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 15/01/2023 12:43

Even at the time we all knew LMP was the wrong sex and the wrong age for this to be in any way a standard, sincere marriage

IAmWomanHearMeRoar1 · 15/01/2023 13:38

I think they both got something out of it. Her publicity, MJ a 'beard' for want of a better term regarding his sexual attraction to young boys. It quite clearly was a fake marriage. Does anyone truly believe they consumated it? I don't. I'd basically put my house and 10 years salary on it. Even Debbie Rowe insinuated that she didn't conceive by having sex with him.

IAmWomanHearMeRoar1 · 15/01/2023 13:40

Btw OP, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you starting this thread. You're not talking ill of her, so ignore the precious people. They didn't have to click on the thread. I see a lot of threads that don't remotely interest me. I scroll past. That's what they should do.

"Wondering why a beautiful, talented, wealthy woman would marry Michael Jackson is something that I can't comprehend."

You do realise MJ was handsome (ish, eye of the beholder), talented and wealthy too right? What a rude and disrespectful thread.

You do realise MJ was handsome

You're joking, right? He may have been handsome as a teenager/20s, but at the end of his life he was grotesque and looked he'd scare children.

IAmWomanHearMeRoar1 · 15/01/2023 13:51

welcome2023 · 14/01/2023 14:20

Never occurred to me before but you know her eldest son commited suicide age 28 I wonder if MJ molested him?

Several of the boys MJ molested commited suicide and have long term trauma / mental health issues as a result

Hmmm that's a good point! It's possible he did molest him.

IAmWomanHearMeRoar1 · 15/01/2023 13:58

RosaMoline · 14/01/2023 17:09

Perhaps I should rephrase.
In my opinion (and this is just my personal opinion) he behaved inappropriately (on paper, I agree it looks extremely dodgy - a forty something man having young boys to sleepover)
But…MJ had a very dysfunctional childhood, and was not allowed to be a little boy, and was stuck in that childlike phase. I think he was actually asexual. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was on the spectrum actually.
The 2nd court case fell apart because none of the witnesses were credible. I also can’t believe Elizabeth Taylor would stand by a child molester either.
If ever evidence does come to light that he was a paedo, then I’m happy to hold my hands up and admit I was terribly wrong.
I am not making excuses for those molest children, so no need to be abusive and accusatory as per a previous PP.

But…MJ had a very dysfunctional childhood, and was not allowed to be a little boy, and was stuck in that childlike phase.

A lot, if not most, celebs had very dysfunctional childhoods. He is the only one who acted like that.

It suited him as a 'cover' ie In Plain Sight, to pretend to have 'never grown up' so he would look innocent. Unfortunately many people fell for this carefully orchestrated narrative.

I think he was actually asexual.

He had many porno magazines around Neverland, a few were seized as evidence by the FBI in one of their raids. He was FAR from 'asexual'....
