Why on earth did Lisa Marie Presley marry MJ?

EightMonthsScared · 13/01/2023 19:48

I know this is fully none of my business but I cannot understand why she married Michael Jackson.

Most press coverage alludes to it being a marriage of convenience to distract from the child abuse allegations against Jackson. That makes sense but if that's true, what was in it for her?

I could fully understand it if she was just some nobody trying to break into modelling/acting, or a C lister trying to climb up.

It's baffling.

She was stunningly beautiful and in interviews I saw had personality and was articulate

So at first glance they seem an odd match because he was none of those things but I would imagine her childhood was fairly neglectful but equally privileged, she had a father who was probably quite frightening at times but who she didnt really know

He had a similar childhood, he was frightened of his dad but his dad was the one who sort of made his career (at the start anyway)

So emotionally they probably had a lot in common. I think she was probalby used a bit by him for the marriage though

Blainesmaries · 14/01/2023 11:36

Presumably at some level they cared for each other, they both grew up in the spotlight, both had weird childhoods I can see them bonding on that level. Then on top of that the PR people were pushing it, King of pop, marrying the king of rock and rolls daughter.... and MJ's advisors thought it may help his image.

UWhatNow · 14/01/2023 11:39

Some strange responses here. I think it’s a perfectly reasonable question op - it’s such a odd pairing. But she never looked the sharpest knife in the box and maybe she was manipulated. Marrying her would’ve been a coup for MJ’s PR.

StephanieSuperpowers · 14/01/2023 11:45

I get what you're asking, OP. I know she talked about MJ etc, but it's just hard to imagine they had the sexual spark that you would assume most who marry have, at least at the start. So it's an odd one. His emotional energy appears to have been directed towards young children, and his sexual energy too. So how did they even establish a relationship that had marriage potential?

Lurkerlot · 14/01/2023 11:47

Don’t let the self appointed doyennes of taste grind you down OP. Given the recent film release followed by her untimely death it’s a reasonable query to raise.

It's hard to imagine anyone having a sexual spark with MJ after about 1985 tbf.

LizzieSiddal · 14/01/2023 11:51

@Celia24 Her dad was one of the biggest superstars of all time (who died young and she never really knew) and she happens to marry another biggest superstars of all time

The part about not really knowing her dad just isn’t true. She regularly stayed with him and was there at the house when he died, she actually saw him and asked what was wrong with him, so heartbreaking for a 9 year old to witness.

@lljkk

Nope, not disingenuous. I don't get their relationship.

You don't need too. How would supposedly understanding it improve your life? This is a nonsense thread.

Yeah. It's not even his increasingly odd appearance (which must have been unappealing in real life), but he also appears to have gone even odder as time went on, more isolated, solitary, withdrawn into a fantasy world.

Adults usually find that kind of thing hard to connect with.

Or maybe she was a very bright, switched on woman, who knew her own mind!

minticecreamisjustok · 14/01/2023 12:00

Lisa had done few interviews in the past, where she talks in great detail about the marriage, her mum was shocked about the engagement and knew nothing until a load of helicopters were flying around the house from the press. From what I remember watching it was a relationship that came from friendship, I was surprised that it was a sexual relationship as I thought it was somehow a cover for him. MJ used to sleep in his make up next to her. the marriage became toxic and ended but even after it ended there was still some on/off relationship between them.

EightMonthsScared · 14/01/2023 12:00

Finally, some normal non-nethuns have entered the chat!

That's my feeling too @bellac11

"but it's just hard to imagine they had the sexual spark that you would assume most who marry have"

Precisely, I think that hits the nail on the head.

"Don’t let the self appointed doyennes of taste grind you down OP." Thanks @Lurkerlot MN has become quite joyless recently. You have to preface every post with disclaimers and obvious sign posting etc. Used to be great for a chat but now you have to anticipate the responses of the tone police and the plain stupid.

"Some strange responses here." Innit @UWhatNow ?@UWhatNow

Like the one telling me that I only find it weird because that's what the media tells me. Like I'm a ShEepLE 😂😂Because Michael Jackson was such an attractive man in every possible way, obviously 🙃

Let's not forget her dad met Priscilla Presley when she was 13, he was 24..... Her idea of normal was skewed ever since she was born.

I love the way everybody is being pearl-clutchy when everybody has been frothing over Harry and Meghan all friggin' week.

It's a normal thing to discuss. She was who she was (a good looking woman and heiress), Jackson wasn't exactly good looking and he was dogged by child molestation rumours.

IRL, everybody finds the partnership weird. It's pps who are being disingenuous.

hardly a like for like comparison is it OP? Go and read a book or something you my be terribly bored

LadyKenya · 14/01/2023 12:03

Yes because if you do not agree with the OP's strange way of thinking, you must not be normal.

EightMonthsScared · 14/01/2023 12:05

"How would supposedly understanding it improve your life?" I dunno @ladykenya I have an insatiable curiosity for so many, many things.

Wondering why a beautiful, talented, wealthy woman would marry Michael Jackson is something that I can't comprehend. It's curious and that's why I started this thread. You are welcome to leave the thread if you find it distasteful. The Internet has tonnes on it <thumbs up>

I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of the real world would find it an odd marriage @LadyKenya

Humans are social animals, we are interested in, fascinated and shocked by, feel empathy with, or anger toward other humans. Its normal and part of the human condition.

Thats why there are countless threads on this forum about what my mum did, my husband, my brother in law, my kids, this teacher, that neighbour, this politician, that celebrity, this shop assistant, that colleague, the list is endless

Perhaps you found yourself on a website about women and their moans/insights/questions about life when you meant to engage with a website forum about cycling or accounting or something?

pictoosh · 14/01/2023 12:22

I assume for increased money and power.

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2023 12:23

There must be interviews where LMP has explained it?

I just read this:

"In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, Presley revealed what drew her to Jackson. "You get sucked into the, ‘You poor, misunderstood person, you…’ I'm a sucker for that," she explained. When the "Thriller" artist was accused of child abuse for the first time in 1993 — he later settled the case — she stuck by his side. "I got into this whole, ‘I’m going to save you' thing," she admitted."

He asked her in the middle of the first wave of accusations against him. Sounds like manipulation to me.

toocold54 · 14/01/2023 12:51

Because he was rich and famous.

Look at most celebs and you’ll wonder why their spouses married them but you know that they wouldn’t have if they weren’t rich and famous.

Child abuse allegations aside, I’ve seen lots of interviews and videos of MJ and he seems a really nice, kind and fun person to be around (of course it could be a mask) but it could easily be possible to fall in love with someone like that in a world that’s full of so many fake people like men after her money or just wanting to be with her because she’s related to Elvis etc.

She just died. Now isn’t the time to lay judgement on the choices she made while she was alive.

This. None of your business.

You must be joking, have you any idea how wealthy she was at the point she married him

Or do you mean why he married her?
