When in the actual fuck is this going to end?! Absolutely heartbreaking!! What is possessing people to either A. Get dogs they cannot contain?!! B. Get dog breeds totally beyond there control/capacity!

I know it's slightly detailing the thread but still important and relevant and I agree with several PP about how some owners literally don't give a shit about their dogs behaviour and even think it's funny and cute when dogs run up and jump etc. This can be very frightening to a child, in fact my DD has been knocked over by one of these "friendly" dogs.

I am a dog owner and I sometimes walk my dog in the local dog park, she has 99% recall and is just focussed on her ball bit if I even get a hint of her going off to someone else to bother them I call her back and put her on the lead. Most of her socialising is done when we walk on the lead and I ask the owner if it's ok to say hello.

I'm massively going off the dog park due to owners with their cockers/labs whatevers with zero recall who run up and jump on me and my not interested dogs. Sorry nothing against these breeds but obviously some breeds have become more popular for families in lockdown and yet these people seem unable to train them.

Feeling particularly grouchy today due to be lunged at by a cocker on our walk this morning.

My heart goes out to the poor family who have lost this woman.

SmartHome · 13/01/2023 17:55

She was walking 7 dogs. The 8th one involved was the rogue one that attacked her, probably a sausage dog or a chihuahua of course and not at all a pit or cane corso. It is not clear if the other woman hospitalised was with her or not so they might have been wlaking 7 between 2. The 7 had to be let go either way and they were all owned by different people and the woman, or possibly 2 women, were dog walkers.

Putting the issue of generally bad behaved dogs of all types aside…

The vast majority of fatal and near fatal dog attacks in the UK and the US have been fighting / bull baiting breeds like XL bullies, pit bulls and staffies. I’d put money on the dog who carried out this attack being one of those types.

These are dogs which have strong jaws and a terrier tendency to bite, hold and shake, which causes horrible injuries. They are also very tenacious and will continue attacking even when they are being beaten with bats or stabbed.

Owners of these dogs insist that it’s the owners, not the breed, but there have been documented examples of beloved, placid, cuddly family pitbulls suddenly snapping attacking humans and other animals. These weren’t rescue dogs with an unknown history, they were well loved family dogs raised by the owner from puppies.

There is a lot of pro-pitbull propaganda on the internet which is going out of its way to insist these types of dogs are misunderstood sweethearts - a propaganda campaign you don’t see with other dangerous breeds like German shepherds or Rottweilers. I think this is resulting in more people getting them and not realising how dangerous they can be, even when treated with love.

To me, it’s like owning a tiger as a pet but treating it like a house cat.

Breed confirmed yet?

hookiewookie29 · 13/01/2023 18:20

We have a two year old Staffy. He is very very good, is fabulous off his lead and never even bothers about other dogs or people- he doesn't even look at them. His recall is excellent. However I only ever let him off his lead at a nearby quiet field because I know that, if he was bothered by another dog with lousy recall and he did get a bit cross because they won't leave him alone, then it would be my dog to blame because of his breed.
What has happened is absolutely tragic, and the dogs will suffer because of their owners.

Agree there are far too many people, including on Mumsnet who dismiss the physical capability and breeding/natural instincts of these breeds. A bichon frise however annoying, barky and bitey isn't going to kill a fully grown adult. A pitbull on the other hand...

Nope. It's so much more fun to speculate though.

SmartHome · 13/01/2023 19:05

There have been 63 recorded fatal dog attacks since the 89s in the UK. And obviously many more on other dogs, horses and livestock plus many more global human fatalities and many serious but non-fatal attacks.

Dogs involved in the recorded UK fatal attacks were:

1 x Alsatian Malamute
12 x Alsatians (all pre 1991)
16 x Amercian Bulldogs
7 x American Bully XL
2 x Amercian Pit Bull Terrier
2 x Bordeaux Bulldog
3 x British Bulldog
2 x Bull Mastiff
1 x Bull Terrier
1 x Bulldog type
1 x Bulldog-cross
4 x Bullmastiff
1 x Bull-type Terrier
1 x Cane Corso
1 x Cane Corso cross
1 x Cane Corso cross American Bully XL
1 x Doberman
2 x German Shepherd (one a police dog)
1 x German Shepherd Chow Chow cross
1 x Husky
1 x Jack Russell (baby killed in cot while sleeping)
1 x Jack Russell Terrier (baby killed in cot while sleeping)
1 x Jack Russell Terrier cross (baby killed in cot while sleeping)
3 x Mastiff cross
1 x Neapolitan Mastiff
2 x Pit bull
1 x Pit bull cross
1 x Pit bull terrier
2 x Pit Bull type
1 x Presa Canario
10 x Rottweiler
16 x Staffordshire Bull Terrier
2 x Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross
1 x Staffordshire Pitbull cross
2 x Unkown (including the Caterham fatality which hasn't been officially announced yet)

12 dogs involved in fatal attacks in the 80s
6 dogs involved in fatal attacks in the 90s
16 dogs involved in fatal attacks in the 00s
86 dogs involved in fatal attacks in the 10s
60 dogs involved in fatal attacks in the 20s so far 2020-yesterday

I think the data speaks for itself. Are these fatalities acceptable so people can own big dogs who 'wouldn't hurt a fly'?

SmartHome · 13/01/2023 19:06

But yes, I'm sure this one was a poodle or a sausage dog

userxx · 13/01/2023 19:14

@SmartHome Confused on the German shepherd and Alsatian stats as it's the same breed.

hookiewookie29 · 13/01/2023 19:15

Just stated on the news that the poor girl was walking 8 dogs when she was attacked. Another girl received dog bites.

Far too many. Dog walkers should have 4 maximum at any 1 time.

Those saying dogs hardly ever kill humans. Maybe not kill. But maim, maul, disfigure. Those numbers are in their many thousands in the uk. Follow a page on fb called Bad Dogs and Bad Owners, it’s international but there are loads of British horror stories.

Poor American child got mauled a few days ago in the US. His scalp came off. Photos on his mother’s fb are graphic. I wish every “itS nOt tHe BrEed” dickhead would look at the photos and understand it IS the breed. No out of control poodle could inflict this kind of damage.

CousinKrispy
who licenses the person with a knife or gun that kills many people, as recently happened in French, let’s ban all knives should we?

Guns are very heavily regulated in the UK, apparently to very good effect.

There are also some regulations on knives.

This won't stop every violent crime because some people are always going to be violent dickheads. But my point is that our society usesa variety of measures to licence and regulate other things that can be dangerous, because we see it as worthwhile. What's your point? That we should have no laws at all because some people won't follow them?

The woman who was attacked was the person walking the group of dogs, police have now revealed.

@Rinoachicken just saw that. Thanks for clarifying ❤️

Holy fuck. I am never going to unsee that pic from the scene with half his head ripped off.

Poppyseed14 · 13/01/2023 20:01

Dear God that poor child. It's a miracle he survived that attack 😰

Poppyseed14 · 13/01/2023 20:07

The Daily Mail article is saying that the dogs acted like a pack. So maybe the (very valid) assumptions of a bully breed being involved are incorrect and the lady was just overcome by the amount of dogs involved. I guess it just takes one deep bite in the wrong place to bleed out. I saw on one of the local Facebook groups last night (I live about 5 miles from where it happened) that there were a couple of sausage dogs and a Leonberger involved. According to the DM article owners could face a jail term and/or unlimited fine.

DunjeeOn · 13/01/2023 20:14

Well Leonbergers are fucking massive but not known to be aggressive

They’re beautiful but bigger than a St Bernard - if one of those turned on you you’d have no chance

Problem is they have a 399psi bite pressure. An American bulldog has a 305psi bite pressure for comparison.

I do wonder if the dogs in the pack started to fight and she tried to intervene and tragedy struck.

Not sure why if a Leonberger was in the mix why she was walking it with any other dogs?! A dog of that size and power really needs full solo control.

As far as I know they’re pretty dopey dogs so she maybe though it would happily mooch alongside the other dogs? I don’t know it’s terrifying. It’s putting me off ever having another dog
