Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

@ChocChipOwl I agree with @TrashyPanda have a good think before deciding. Made a few mistakes with mine in the beginning by rushing in.

There are a number of images online of how this model has been finished, have a good look, one example has TrashyPandas' lovely orangerie maplestreet.co.uk/products/edwardian-sid-cooke-silver-jubilee-dolls-house?_pos=5&_sid=787debad5&_ss=r

I used brick slips on the back wall, stuck on, given a coat of matte varnish and polyfiller for the grout. The varnish means the grout doesn’t stick to the tiles.

you can just see the roof - I’ll try to get a better picture tomorrow. I used tiles from Stacey’s for that.

it’s expensive, but it does look lovely.

What is this please? A house plaque?

And you're both so right. I'm have a tendency to rush and don't want to mess it all up

@ChocChipOwl yes a plaque very often with the date a house was built

Laureatus · 19/01/2023 23:08

No, but I'd love to. I am fascinated by miniatures of all kinds and adored dolls houses as a kid - I always liked the antique kind that you look at rather than play with! I love model railways too, it's a similar thing.

KeziaOAP · 19/01/2023 23:14

@Laureatus another model railway enthusiast here 😀 Scratch built buildings and scenery for DS layout some 30+ years ago

Laureatus · 19/01/2023 23:52

@KeziaOAP that sounds great! I made all our buildings from cardboard kits with my brother, and I was in charge of all the scene setting, esp the little people. Our layout is at my parents so I don't get to see it often. But our 3yo is very into trains and my husband was quite gobsmacked at all the different Brio layouts I came up with! 🙂

TrashyPanda · 19/01/2023 22:09

@Dancingtumbleweed - have you thought about building your Croft from scratch?

for the exterior walls, using Das (aka paper clay) would work really well. There are loads of articles online about to apply and texture it. The master of this is Rick Pierce of Frogmorton Studios.

i had a go making a tower house out of mount board and Das, and it makes quite sturdy building if you use Das on interior and exterior walls. Plus it is cheap!

Thank you. I am having a hard time finding the right shape of dolls house for what I want. Using Das sounds like a great idea. I have used it years ago and think it would be perfect. I am very excited about the idea, I am good at making things. I will do some research.

Giggorata · 20/01/2023 08:39

Using good old egg boxes, or better still, the packaging that some electrical goods have now, produces great stonework on buildings, too.

@TrashyPanda, I did a small house in sandpaper bricks. Another labour of love!

That is gorgeous Giggorata

ChocChipOwl · 20/01/2023 12:38

@TrashyPanda ok I think I can possibly turn my hand to the mortar and stencils so I've ordered both of those. Thank you

Decide my first job is the front door and I'm going to paint that in Rectory Red, a farrow and ball shade. I believe a lot of Edwardian front doors were red and I like the shade

Here's my Georgian style - was brought up in a Georgian House and the dining room is as close as I remember.

@ChocChipOwl thank you. Furniture sometimes buy whitewood and then paint the kitchen dresser is hand made, as are the fireplaces surrounds, love working with wood. My late father bought me more expensive pieces always a lovely surprise!

Your red door is going to look great.

QueueEtwo · 20/01/2023 17:19

Look what's come up on my local Facebook market place!

I really want it but it's 1/12 scale, I really have no where to put it! 😕

Congratulations on your new home!

ChocChipOwl · 20/01/2023 21:07

I love your fireplaces. I'd love them in my new home. Don't suppose you'd rip them out and send over would you? 😝

Well, I've made a small start. I removed the door and painted it rectory red and then varnished it - you can't see properly because the light isn't great. I've got some stained glass sheets on the way to pop in it and then I think I'll be happy with that - need a little knocker to glue on at some point too- oh and the number of the house!

It'll be either 61 (my parents lived at no 61, they died 4 years ago) or 28 .. that's my number. I'm veering towards 28 because I've enough reminders of my mum and dad dotted about but I'm going between the two right now
