Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

@stayathomegardener your house is interesting! I suspect it is a homemade one, but built really nicely with someone with woodwork skills, maybe to mimic a real house?
My guess, and just a guess, is that it dates from 1910 - pre WW2.

I love the little details like the windows and the window seats! Could you take a closer photo of the fireplaces?

Earlier houses are bigger (I have one or two awaiting restoration!) and scale didn't exist, so the furniture was a mix of sizes. Your furniture is a mix of ages, but has some early pieces.
The toilet and bath date from 1930's. The toilet is from a known maker of the 1930's.
The wooden lounge set is also 1930's (probably handcrafted) andI suspect the single chair also - maybe a bedroom chair?
Hope that helps.

@ChocChipOwl looking good! I think the flowers are coming up nicely! They are more sparse, but more delicate on the older houses. They also appear more in patches also the bottom, rather than continuous flowers.
The Triang green grass is showing - that is original and would have extended across the front and down the sides of the base.
The clear strip of wood hidden under the flooring is interesting - I suspect there was original another wall here?

Minimoan · 13/01/2023 21:22

Two photos to show the difference in Triang flower painting over the years - first photo is 1930's with sparse flowers but sweet details like the round 'roses' - second photo show a late 40's/50's house painted with bolder flower patterning.

Here a link to a guide on scale

poppetsdollybits.com/news/art/26/dolls-house-scaling/

they do wallpapers etc in a whole range of scales, including 1/16 and 1/18 and have got fabulous products. Can highly recommend.

This thread has inspired me to repair my dolls house kitchen walls. I pulled off a shelving unit which ripped the wallpaper. I've bought more, and other things, so will shortly be dolls housing instead of card making.

Morning all. Been busy the last couple of days with work but think I've got time for a bit more paint stripping today!

I'm not sure if I'll be able to reveal those flowers properly though. We will see

Thanks for scape thing, I'm pretty sure this house is 1/12 but I'll double check

Oh what a wonderful thread!! Absolutely love miniatures (of anything), always have since I was a child, so dolls houses/furnishings are right up my street.

How lovely to see your progress @ChocChipOwl and all the photographs of houses on the thread! More, please... Flowers

ItisallPooh · 15/01/2023 12:06

I would absolutely love one but no I don't have one.

countvoncount · 15/01/2023 12:25

This has been the most lovely thread to read, and I have made a bit on eBay for one myself!!

I'm not particularly artistic or handy, but lucky enough to have a spare library type room that I can use to shut myself in and renovate my little house!!
I've been looking for a little hobby/interest and this just looks perfect!!
Is it bad that I don't want people in my house?? I just want a beautiful home, 100% no children 😂

countvoncount · 15/01/2023 12:25

*bid not bit!

TrashyPanda · 15/01/2023 12:35

To have people/not have people is a very individual choice.

i was lucky enough to be able to buy from Julie Campbell when she started out (many years ago!)

she did the dolls in the TV show The Miniaturist. I love her style and like that my “families” all look related!

i also have a 1/24 house for my miniature bears.

I like people and lighting. I’m not bothered if there are no stairs in a house, cos they can be a waste of valuable space

its your house - and you can have it however you want it. If only RL worked that way.

ive found using Mod Podge glue is the best thing when you are papering - spread it on the walls, not the paper.

ChocChipOwl · 15/01/2023 12:40

@countvoncount that's so nice! I'm not in the least bit handy but you honestly can't go wrong here I don't think - you can do what you want and there's so much expertise on this thread too

If I can't get the flowers to come out properly on my house, I think I will end up painting the outside in a pale cream. I'm still undecided on the interior! It's a 1939 house so it'll either be Victorian, Edwardian or 1930s. I go between all of them.

However I've got a way to go yet. I want the house properly cleaned up and painted first and then I'll move on to wallpaper!

ChocChipOwl · 15/01/2023 12:44

@TrashyPanda I'm undecided on my family. I do believe a house needs to be lived in but I can't quite picture what the family might look like just yet! They may well be mice

My daughter thinks I've lost my fucking mind as this couldn't be further away from what I usually do.

But I have a long standing interest in history and the idea of an antique dolls house just pinged into my mind when I got my apothecary drawers. Will look so nice on there once done!

This thread is dangerous, I am laid up in bed with flu feverishly looking at dolls houses online and really tempted to make an impulse purchase!

TroysMammy · 15/01/2023 13:39

@Rolypops do it or you could find yourself better and of clearer mind and you'll never get one. Hope you have a speedy recovery so you can make a start on your new dolls house.

TangledWebOfDeception · 15/01/2023 14:02

@Rolypops i agree with poster above. Do it!
