Can’t believe my dog did this!

We rehomed our lovely dog 2 years ago and he is now 4 years old. He came to us from a very loving home
(re homing was for a genuine reason) and with a very sweet nature. We’re so lucky he’s slotted into our family perfectly. He’s definitely ‘my’ dog though, doesn’t bother much with the kids.

Earlier this evening I was in the kitchen and my son and daughter were playing in the lounge (rather roughly I suspect 🙄) and my daughter fell off the sofa onto her face. She’s only 3 so was VERY upset, really crying her eyes out. I was sat on the floor with her in my arms cuddling her and the dog came up and sniffed around us and walked away. Next thing, he reappeared with DDs favourite teddy in his mouth. He plopped it into her lap and sort of nudged it further into her. He then just sat next to us with his head resting on her leg. I was gobsmacked! He has NEVER done anything remotely like that! He’s not a ‘fetch’ kind of dog, so it was obvious he was trying to comfort her rather than play a game. I know this sounds crazy and most dogs have moments like this but I just felt so overwhelmed in that moment of just how much dogs understand human emotions.
My husband came home and I told him and he was totally nonplussed and just said ‘oh that’s nice’ 🙄
So I’m telling you! Now excuse me whilst I go cuddle my emotionally intelligent marvel of a dog 😂

Well that’s gorgeous! Ddog has a slightly less adorable way to “fix” sad dd - once our dog licked dds face (while I was busy saying that she shouldn’t let the dog do that!) and licked up her nose- dd laughed really loudly, pushed ddog away but was obviously really happy. Few days later, dd fell over and hurt her leg, ddog took in that dd was crying and immediately thought “I know how to cheer her up” and started trying to stick her stinky dog tongue up dds nose.

every time anyone cries or is in pain in our house, the dog goes for the nose kiss. It’s rather revolting and means you have to move fast to be out of dog nose snog range. It’s pretty cute she remembered what made dd laugh though, why couldn’t it have been something cute though?!

Sorry I don’t know how to reply so we will see if this works! That’s so lovely and very cute (even if it is stinky 😂) Dogs really are so special aren’t they 💕

That’s so adorable, I hope he’s been given all the pets! And I hope DD is ok ♥️

That's so lovely! I find many animals to be more emotionally intelligent than some humans to be honest!
And it's so lovely when they do something like this because they don't do it with any agenda other than trying to help 🥰

I hope he got a big cuddle and lovies..

Oh he certainly has! I don’t think he knows what’s hit him with all the extra big cuddles and treats!

Yes all the cuddles and thank you, DD is fine, just a little bit bruised from apparently diving headfirst off the sofa 🙄

I opened this expecting another dog bite thread. How wonderful, what a good doggy...it makes such a change from all the dog hate posts. Dogs can be so in tune with emotions and react in empathetic ways. So intelligent.

DH is disabled and often in pain due to chronic conditions. On one occasion, he was sitting in his chair, doubled over groaning in pain. Ddog jumped onto the next chair, reached over and rested her head on his shoulder, and snuggled up to him. She is a big dog! She is not a 'cuddler' normally. A mix of breeds, including ones that can be aloof. Her main breed is a 'fighting bears' breed.

Like you OP we were emotionally moved by ddogs actions.

Years ago when ds2 (profoundly deaf) was living at home I went out one night and left him at home with Bumbledog. When he went to bed Bdog went with him and disappeared under the duvet... About three hours later he woke ds2 up by shooting out from under the covers and sitting by the door. Ds2 got up opened the door and followed him downstairs where I had just come through the door. Bumbledog was letting him know I was at home!

Ahh what a lovely story to have, you will have to keep reminding DD so she keeps it as a memory for when she is older.
